Abstract

An approach is described for a user equipment (UE) configured for a new radio (NR) system with unlicensed spectrum. The UE includes processor circuitry that performs a first channel load measurement at a first frequency of a serving cell and a second channel load measurement at a second frequency of a neighbor cell and associates a report with the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement. At least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is in the unlicensed spectrum. The UE also includes radio front end circuitry that is coupled to the processor circuitry and configured to transmit the report to an access node (AN).

Claims (45)

1. A user equipment (UE), the UE comprising:

processor circuitry configured to:

perform a first channel load measurement for first signals received from a new radio (NR) serving cell at a first frequency having a first priority and a second channel load measurement for second signals received from an NR neighbor cell at a second frequency having a second priority, wherein at least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is in an unlicensed spectrum, and wherein each of the first signals and second signals include reference signals and data signals;

associate a report with the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement;

select the NR serving cell or the NR neighbor cell for the UE based at least on the first and second channel load measurements and the first and second priorities; and

radio front end circuitry coupled to the processor circuitry and configured to transmit the report to an access node (AN) of the NR serving cell.

2. The UE of claim 1 , wherein each of the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement comprises a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement and a channel occupancy measurement.

3. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the report is a new report configured to report the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement.

4. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the report is an existing report configured to include the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement.

5. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the NR serving cell comprises one of a primary cell (PCell), a secondary cell (SCell), or a primary SCell (PSCell).

6. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuitry is further configured to:

perform a first reference signal measurement of a first reference signal in the received first signals at the first frequency and a second reference signal measurement of a second reference signal in the received second signals at the second frequency; and

wherein the report provides a first indication of a first comparison between the second reference signal measurement and either a first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and provides a second indication of a second comparison between the second channel load measurement and either a second threshold or the first channel load measurement.

The UE of claim 6 , wherein the first reference signal measurement and the second reference signal measurement each comprises one of a reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement, a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) measurement, or a signal to noise and interference ratio (SNIR) measurement.

8. The UE of claim 6 , wherein the processor circuitry is further configured to:

associate the report with the first priority and the second priority; and

select the second frequency of the NR neighbor cell for the UE in response to the second priority being higher than the first priority, the second reference signal measurement being higher than the first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and the second channel load measurement being lower than the second threshold or the first channel load measurement.

9. A method to configure a user equipment (UE) for operation in an unlicensed spectrum, the method comprising:

performing a first channel load measurement for first signals received from a new radio (NR) serving cell at a first frequency having a first priority and a second channel load measurement for second signals received from an NR neighbor cell at a second frequency having a second priority, wherein at least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is in the unlicensed spectrum, and wherein each of the first signals and second signals include reference signals and data signals;

associating a report with the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement;

selecting the NR serving cell or the NR neighbor cell for the UE based at least on the first and second channel load measurements and the first and second priorities; and

transmitting the report to an access node (AN) of the NR serving cell.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the performing the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement each comprises performing a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement and a channel occupancy measurement.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the associating the report comprises associating a new report configured to report the first and second channel load measurements.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the associating the report comprises including the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement in an existing report.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the NR serving cell comprises one of a primary cell (PCell), a secondary cell (SCell), or a primary SCell (PSCell).

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

performing a first reference signal measurement of a first reference signal in the received first signals at the first frequency and a second reference signal measurement of a second reference signal in the received second signals at the second frequency; and

wherein the report provides a first indication of a first comparison between the second reference signal measurement and either a first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and provides a second indication of a second comparison between the second channel load measurement and either a second threshold or the first channel load measurement.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the performing the first reference signal measurement and the second reference signal measurement each comprises performing one of a reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement, a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) measurement, or a signal to noise and interference ratio (SNIR) measurement.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

associating the report with the first priority and the second priority; and

selecting the second frequency of the NR neighbor cell for the UE in response to the second priority being higher than the first priority, the second reference signal measurement being higher than the first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and the second channel load measurement being lower than the second threshold or the first channel load measurement.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable media comprising instructions to cause an electronic device, upon execution of the instructions by one or more processors of the electronic device, to perform one of more elements of a method to configure a user equipment (UE) for operation in an unlicensed spectrum, the method comprising:

performing a first channel load measurement for first signals received from a new radio (NR) serving cell at a first frequency having a first priority and a second channel load measurement for second signals received from an NR neighbor cell at a second frequency having a second priority, wherein at least one of the first frequency and the second frequency is in the unlicensed spectrum, and wherein each of the first signals and second signals include reference signals and data signals;

associating a report with the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement;

selecting the NR serving cell or the NR neighbor cell for the UE based at least on the first and second channel load measurements and the first and second priorities; and

causing the electronic device to transmit the report to an access node (AN) of the NR serving cell.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the performing the first channel load measurement and the second channel load measurement each comprises performing a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement and a channel occupancy measurement.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , the method further comprising:

performing a first reference signal measurement of a first reference signal in the received first signals at the first frequency and a second reference signal measurement of a second reference signal in the received second signals at the second frequency; and

wherein the report provides a first indication of a first comparison between the second reference signal measurement and either a first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and provides a second indication of a second comparison between the second channel load measurement and either a second threshold or the first channel load measurement.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19 , the method further comprising:

associating the report with the first priority and the second priority; and

selecting the second frequency of the NR neighbor cell for the UE in response to the second priority being higher than the first priority, the second reference signal measurement being higher than the first threshold or the first reference signal measurement, and the second channel load measurement being lower than the second threshold or the first channel load measurement.
