Abstract

An approach is described for a user equipment (UE) for enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) in a connected mode, where the UE includes processor circuitry and radio front end circuitry. The processor circuitry is configured to perform a downlink (DL) quality measurement, and to generate a DL quality report based on the DL quality measurement, wherein a definition of the DL quality report matches a definition of quality report in Msg3. The radio front end circuitry is configured to transmit the DL quality report to a next generation base station (gNB).

Claims (33)

1. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

processor circuitry configured to:

perform a downlink (DL) quality measurement; and

generating a DL quality report based on the DL quality measurement, wherein a definition of the DL quality report matches a definition of a quality report in a Msg3; and

radio front end circuitry coupled to the processor circuitry, and configured to transmit the DL quality report to a base station (BS),

wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on a threshold, the threshold being a determination that the UE is unable to decode a machine type communication physical downlink control channel (MPDCCH) with a block error rate (BLER) of less than X percent for N consecutive times in a narrow band (NB), wherein N and X are configured or predefined,

wherein the DL quality report includes an indication of a repetition number to achieve X, wherein X equals one percent.

2. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the DL quality report uses a same quality metric as defined in the Msg3.

3. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuitry is further configured to trigger the generation of the DL quality report based on receipt of an indication from the BS in a radio resource control (RRC) message.

4. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuitry is further configured to trigger the generation of the DL quality report based on receipt of a channel state information (CSI) request field in downlink control information (DCI).

5. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the radio front end circuitry transmits the DL quality report in a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH).

6. The UE of claim 1 , wherein the DL quality report is an aperiodic report.

7. A method for enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) in a connected mode by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

performing a downlink (DL) quality measurement;

generating a DL quality report based on the DL quality measurement, wherein a definition of the DL quality report matches a definition of a quality report in a Msg3; and

transmitting the DL quality report to a base station (BS),

wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on a threshold, the threshold being a determination that the UE is unable to decode a machine type communication physical downlink control channel (MPDCCH) with a block error rate (BLER) of less than X percent for N consecutive times in a narrow band (NB), wherein N and X are configured or predefined,

wherein the DL quality report includes an indication of a repetition number to achieve X, wherein X equals one percent.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the DL quality report uses a same quality metric as defined in the Msg3.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on receipt of an indication from the BS in a radio resource control (RRC) message.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on receipt of a channel state information (CSI) request field in downlink control information (DCI).

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the transmitting the DL quality report includes using a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH).

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the DL quality report is an aperiodic report.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable media comprising instructions to cause an electronic device, upon execution of the instructions by one or more processors of the electronic device, to perform one or more elements of a method, the method comprising:

performing a downlink (DL) quality measurement;

generating a DL quality report based on the DL quality measurement, wherein a definition of the DL quality report matches a definition of a quality report in a Msg3; and

causing to transmit the DL quality report to a base station (BS),

wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on a threshold, the threshold being a determination that the UE is unable to decode a machine type communication physical downlink control channel (MPDCCH) with a block error rate (BLER) of less than X percent for N consecutive times in a narrow band (NB), wherein N and X are configured or predefined,

wherein the DL quality report includes an indication of a repetition number to achieve X, wherein X equals one percent.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein the DL quality report uses a same quality metric as defined in the Msg3.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on receipt of an indication from the BS in a radio resource control (RRC) message.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein the generating the DL quality report is triggered based on receipt of a channel state information (CSI) request field in downlink control information (DCI).

17. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein the causing to transmit the DL quality report includes causing to use a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH).
