Abstract

The disclosure is directed to a system and method of operating a user equipment (UE) to make the new radio (NR) carrier aggregation more effective. The system and method can include at least: receiving a release message confirming release of the UE from a base station, the release message including Long Term Evolution radio access technology (RAT) frequencies and New Radio (NR) RAT frequencies; measuring during an IDLE state, the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies; transmitting a resume request message to the base station, the resume request message including an indication of a measurement report available from the UE, the measurement report including frequency measurements for the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies; and after a security setup with the base station, transmitting a resume complete message to the base station, the resume complete message including the measurement report with the LTE RAT frequency measurements and NR RAT frequency measurements.

measuring, by the UE, during an IDLE state, the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies;

transmitting, by the UE, a resume request message to the base station, the resume request message including an indication of a measurement report available from the UE, the measurement report including frequency measurements for the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies;

after a security setup with the base station, transmitting, by the UE, a resume complete message to the base station, the resume complete message including the measurement report with LTE RAT frequency measurements and NR RAT frequency measurements;

generating, by the UE, a radio resource control (RRC) system information request signal, the RRC system information request signal including a request for the LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies of potential secondary carriers; and

receiving, by the UE, a system information broadcast including the LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies of potential secondary carriers based on the RRC system information request signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

configuring, by the UE, a carrier aggregation mode based on one of the LTE RAT frequency measurements or the NR RAT frequency measurements; and

performing wireless communication with the base station in the carrier aggregation mode.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the UE and prior to the security setup, a measurement request message from the base station, the measurement request message including a request for a frequency measurement report that is available from the UE.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the LTE RAT frequencies and NR RAT frequencies are supported by the base station, and a second portion of the LTE RAT frequencies and NR RAT frequencies are supported by a second base station.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising requesting, during the IDLE state, additional LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies.

6. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by one or more processors of a user equipment (UE), cause the UE to perform operations comprising:

receiving a release message confirming release of the UE from a base station, the release message including Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology (RAT) frequencies and New Radio (NR) RAT frequencies;

measuring during an IDLE state, the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies;

transmitting a resume request message to the base station, the resume request message including an indication of a measurement report available from the UE, the measurement report including frequency measurements for the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies;

after a security setup with the base station, transmitting a resume complete message to the base station, the resume complete message including the measurement report with LTE RAT frequency measurements and NR RAT frequency measurements;

generating a radio resource control (RRC) system information request signal, the RRC system information request signal including a request for the LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies of potential secondary carriers; and

receiving a system information broadcast including the LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies of potential secondary carriers based on the RRC system information request signal.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise:

configuring a carrier aggregation mode based on one of the LTE RAT frequency measurements or the NR RAT frequency measurements; and

performing wireless communication with the base station in the carrier aggregation mode.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving, prior to the security setup, a measurement request message from the base station, the measurement request message including a request for a frequency measurement report that is available from the UE.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein a first portion of the LTE RAT frequencies and NR RAT frequencies are supported by the base station, and a second portion of the LTE RAT frequencies and NR RAT frequencies are supported by a second base station.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise requesting, during the IDLE state, additional LTE RAT or NR RAT frequencies.

11. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

radio front end circuitry configured to perform Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology (RAT) wireless communication and new radio (NR) RAT wireless communication; and

a processor, coupled to the radio front end circuitry, configured to:

receive a release message completing release of the UE from a base station, the release message including LTE RAT frequencies and NR RAT frequencies,

measure, using the radio front end circuitry, the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies during an IDLE state of the UE,

transmit, using the radio front end circuitry, a resume request message to the base station, the resume request message including an indication of a measurement report available from the UE, the measurement report including frequency measurements for the LTE RAT frequencies and the NR RAT frequencies,
