Abstract

A method is performed by user equipment (UE) for communicating on a secondary cell (SCell) with fast activation or deactivation. The method includes receiving, from a serving cell, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) including a plurality of bits, wherein individual bits of the plurality of bits each indicate whether respective secondary cells (SCells) of a fifth generation (5G) wireless cellular network are activated or deactivated. The method includes based on a numerology of the serving cell, determining an activation delay time for one or more activated SCells indicated by the plurality of bits of the MAC CE. The method includes communicating using the one or more activated SCells based on the determined activation delay time.

Claims (22)

1. A method for communicating on a secondary cell (SCell) with fast activation or deactivation, the method comprising:

receiving, from a serving cell, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) including a plurality of bits, wherein individual bits of the plurality of bits each indicate whether respective secondary cells (SCells) are activated or deactivated;

based on a numerology of the serving cell, determining an activation delay time for one or more SCells indicated by the plurality of bits of the MAC CE, the activation delay time being indicated by the MAC CE;

causing activation of the one or more SCells at a first slot after the activation delay time; and

communicating using the one or more activated SCells based on the determined activation delay time.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined activation delay time is less than 5 milliseconds.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined activation delay time is based on physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) to hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement (HARQ-ACK) response delay that is signaled in downlink control information (DCI).

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the numerology includes a subcarrier spacing or a symbol length used by the serving cell.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MAC CE includes a MAC PDU subheader with a logical channel ID (LCID) to indicate a size of the MAC CE.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the size pf the MAC CE is either one octet or four octets.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the LCID is not included in a set of LCIDs used for a 3GPP Release 15 SCell activation or deactivation timing.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MAC CE includes an indicator to indicate that the activation delay time is to be determined based on the numerology of the serving cell.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the indicator is a single bit.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the MAC CE is a first MAC CE, wherein the indicator is a first indicator with a first value, wherein the activation delay time is a first activation delay time, and wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a second MAC CE with a second indicator to indicate that a second activation delay time is to be used for one or more activated SCells indicated by the second MAC CE.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second activation delay time is determined according to a 3GPP Release 15 procedure.

12. An apparatus comprising one or more processors configured to, when executing instructions stored in a memory, perform operations comprising:

decoding a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) received from a serving cell, the MAC CE including a plurality of bits, wherein individual bits of the plurality of bits each indicate whether respective secondary cells (SCells) are activated or deactivated;

based on a numerology of the serving cell, determining an activation delay time for one or more activated SCells indicated by the plurality of bits of the MAC CE, the activation delay time being indicated by the MAC CE;

encoding channel state information (CSI) for the one or more SCells at a first slot after the activation delay time; and

communicating using the one or more activated SCells based on the determined activation delay time.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the determined activation delay time is based on physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) to hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement (HARQ-ACK) response delay that is signaled in downlink control information (DCI).
