Abstract

A first communication device is configured to process packets that conform to a first physical layer (PHY) protocol for wireless vehicular communications and packets that conform to a second PHY protocol for wireless vehicular communications. The first communication device determines that multiple frames are to be transmitted to a second communication device during a transmit opportunity period (TXOP), and determines that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol. In response, the first communication device transmits a first packet that conforms to the first PHY protocol and that includes duration information for the TXOP, and transmits a second packet that conforms to the second PHY protocol to the second communication device during the TXOP.

Claims (58)

1. A method for wireless communication, the method performed at a first communication device that is configured to process packets that conform to a first physical layer (PHY) protocol for wireless vehicular communications and packets that conform to a second PHY protocol for wireless vehicular communications, wherein the first PHY protocol is different from the second PHY protocol, the method comprising:

determining that multiple frames are to be transmitted to a second communication device during a transmit opportunity period (TXOP);

determining that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol, wherein the one or more third communication devices are different from the second communication device;

in response to determining that the one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol,

generating a first packet that conforms to the first PHY protocol to include duration information for the TXOP, and

transmitting the first packet to start the TXOP;

generating a second packet that conforms to the second PHY protocol, the second packet generated to include a frame for the second communication device; and

transmitting the second packet to the second communication device during the TXOP.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

receiving a third packet from a particular third communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determining that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

receiving a third packet from the second communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates a particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determining that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein receiving the third packet having the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

receiving, within the third packet, a neighbor report that includes capability information regarding a plurality of communication devices, the neighbor report including the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

receiving a third packet from a fourth communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates a particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determining that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein receiving the third packet having the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

receiving, within the third packet, a neighbor report that includes capability information regarding a plurality of communication devices, the neighbor report including the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol comprises:

determining whether a particular third communication device has transmitted any third packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determining that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol based on determining that the particular third communication device has not transmitted any third packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the second packet comprises:

beginning transmission of the second packet a defined time period after an end of transmission of the first packet.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein transmitting the second packet comprises:

beginning transmission of the second packet a short interframe space (SIFS) after an end of transmission of the first packet.

10. A first communication device, comprising:

a wireless network interface device configured to process packets that conform to a first physical layer (PHY) protocol for wireless vehicular communications and packets that conform to a second PHY protocol for wireless vehicular communications, wherein the first PHY protocol is different from the second PHY protocol, and wherein the wireless network interface device includes one or more integrated circuit (IC) devices configured to:

determine that multiple frames are to be transmitted to a second communication device during a transmit opportunity period (TXOP),

determine that one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol, wherein the one or more third communication devices are different from the second communication device,

in response to determining that the one or more third communication devices neighboring the first communication device are not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol,

generate a first packet that conforms to the first PHY protocol to include duration information for the TXOP, and

control the wireless network interface device to transmit the first packet to start the TXOP;

wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

generate a second packet that conforms to the second PHY protocol, the second packet generated to include a frame for the second communication device, and

control the wireless network interface device to transmit the second packet to the second communication device during the TXOP.

11. The first communication device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

receive a third packet from a particular third communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determine that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

12. The first communication device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

receive a third packet from the second communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates a particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determine that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

13. The first communication device of claim 12 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

receive, within the third packet, a neighbor report that includes capability information regarding a plurality of communication devices, the neighbor report including the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

14. The first communication device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

receive a third packet from a fourth communication device, the third packet having an indicator that indicates a particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determine that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol in response to receiving the indicator in the third packet.

15. The first communication device of claim 14 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

receive, within the third packet, a neighbor report that includes capability information regarding a plurality of communication devices, the neighbor report including the indicator that indicates the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

16. The first communication device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

determine whether a particular third communication device has transmitted any third packets that conform to the second PHY protocol; and

determine that the particular third communication device is not capable of processing packets that conform to the second PHY protocol based on determining that the particular third communication device has not transmitted any third packets that conform to the second PHY protocol.

17. The first communication device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

control the wireless network interface device to begin transmission of the second packet a defined time period after an end of transmission of the first packet.

18. The first communication device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to:

control the wireless network interface device to begin transmission of the second packet a short interframe space (SIFS) after an end of transmission of the first packet.
