Abstract

A controlled dispensing system includes a dispensing fixture and a server system coupled to the dispensing fixture and a mobile device via a communication network. The server system receives from the mobile device identification data of a user of the mobile device, verifies an identity or age of the user, and receives a request to reserve a controlled product included in the dispensing fixture. In accordance with the verifying of the identity or age of the user and the request to reserve the controlled product, the server system transmits to the mobile device dispense approval data including user validation and product selection information. The dispensing fixture obtains via an input peripheral a dispense code provided by the mobile device, the dispense code corresponding to the dispense approval data, and in accordance with the dispense code, causes a dispensing mechanism to dispense the controlled product.

Claims (48)

1. A controlled dispensing system comprising:

a dispensing fixture including an input peripheral, a plurality of controlled products, and a dispensing mechanism; and

a server system communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture and a mobile device of a user via a communication network;

wherein the server system further includes one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

prior to receiving from the mobile device any requests to reserve or select any of the plurality of controlled products:

receiving from the mobile device image data corresponding to an identification document of the user of the mobile device;

verifying an age of the user based on the image data received from the mobile device, and determining that the age of the user satisfies an age-based restriction associated with the plurality of controlled products;

receiving from the mobile device a request to obtain a list of the plurality of controlled products included in the dispensing fixture; and

in response to the request to obtain the list of the plurality of controlled products, transmitting the list of the plurality of controlled products to the mobile device;

receiving from the mobile device a request to reserve a first controlled product of the plurality of controlled products included in the dispensing fixture; and

in accordance with (i) the verifying of the age of the user and the determination that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction and (ii) the request to reserve the first controlled product, transmitting to the mobile device dispense approval data including (i) an indication that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction and (ii) a product indicator corresponding to the first controlled product; and

wherein the dispensing fixture further includes one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

obtaining via the input peripheral a dispense code provided by the mobile device, wherein the dispense code corresponds to the dispense approval data transmitted from the server system to the mobile device indicating that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction; and

in accordance with the dispense code, causing the dispensing mechanism to dispense the first controlled product.

2. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the input peripheral is a scanning device communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture.

3. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are products for which usage is controlled by an age restriction.

4. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are tobacco products, vaping products, and/or electronic cigarettes.

5. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the image data corresponds to a driver's license of the user.

6. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for:

storing verification data of the user based on the verifying of the age of the user; and

transmitting subsequent approval data to the mobile device for subsequent dispense approval operations based in part on the verification data.

7. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for transmitting the dispense approval data to the mobile device before the mobile device is present at a location of the dispensing fixture.

8. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for processing a payment initiated at the mobile device for the first controlled product.

9. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the dispense code via the input peripheral includes scanning a visual code displayed on the mobile device.

10. The controlled dispensing system of claim 9 , wherein the visual code is a barcode.

11. A method of operating a controlled dispensing system, the method comprising:

at a server system including one or more processors and communicatively coupled to a dispensing fixture and a mobile device of a user via a communication network:

prior to receiving from the mobile device any requests to reserve or select any of a plurality of controlled products included in the dispensing fixture:

receiving from the mobile device image data corresponding to an identification document or face of the user of the mobile device;

verifying an age of the user based on the image data received from the mobile device, and determining that the age of the user satisfies an age-based restriction associated with the plurality of controlled products;

receiving from the mobile device a request to obtain a list of the plurality of controlled products included in the dispensing fixture; and

in response to the request to obtain the list of the plurality of controlled products, transmitting the list of the plurality of controlled products to the mobile device;

receiving from the mobile device a request to reserve a first controlled product of the plurality of controlled products included in the dispensing fixture; and

in accordance with (i) the verifying of the age of the user and the determination that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction and (ii) the request to reserve the first controlled product, transmitting to the mobile device dispense approval data including (i) an indication that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction and (ii) a product indicator corresponding to the first controlled product; and

at the dispensing fixture, the dispensing fixture including one or more processors, an input peripheral, and a dispensing mechanism:

obtaining via the input peripheral a dispense code provided by the mobile device, wherein the dispense code corresponds to the dispense approval data transmitted from the server system to the mobile device indicating that the age of the user satisfies the age-based restriction; and

in accordance with the dispense code, sending an instruction via the one or more processors to the dispensing mechanism causing the dispensing mechanism to dispense the first controlled product.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the input peripheral is a scanning device communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are products for which usage is controlled by an age restriction.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are tobacco products, vaping products, and/or electronic cigarettes.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the image data corresponds to a driver's license of the user.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, at the server:

storing verification data of the user based on the verifying of the age of the user; and

transmitting subsequent approval data to the mobile device for subsequent dispense approval operations based in part on the verification data.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, at the server, transmitting the dispense approval data to the mobile device before the mobile device is present at a location of the dispensing fixture.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, at the server, processing a payment initiated at the mobile device for the first controlled product.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein obtaining the dispense code via the input peripheral includes scanning a visual code displayed on the mobile device.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the visual code is a barcode.
