Abstract

A controlled dispensing system includes a dispensing fixture and a server system coupled to the dispensing fixture and a mobile device via a communication network. The server system receives from the mobile device identification data of a user of the mobile device and verifies an identity or age of the user. In accordance with the verifying of the identity or age of the user, the server system transmits to the mobile device dispense approval data including an indication that the identity or age of the user is verified. The dispensing fixture obtains via an input peripheral a dispense code provided by the mobile device, the dispense code corresponding to the dispense approval data, and in accordance with the dispense code, causes a dispensing mechanism to dispense the controlled product.

Claims (44)

1. A controlled dispensing system comprising:

a dispensing fixture including an input peripheral, a plurality of controlled products, and a dispensing mechanism; and

a server system communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture and a mobile device of a user via a communication network;

wherein the server system further includes one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

prior to receiving from the mobile device any requests to reserve or select any of the plurality of controlled products:

receiving from the mobile device image data corresponding to an identification document or face of the user of the mobile device;

verifying an identity or age of the user based on the image data received from the mobile device; and

in accordance with the verifying of the identity or age of the user, transmitting to the mobile device consumer validation data including an indication that the identity or age of the user is verified;

wherein the dispensing fixture further includes one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

prior to receiving any product selections from the user, scanning via the input peripheral a visual consumer validation code displayed on the mobile device, wherein the consumer validation code corresponds to the consumer validation data transmitted from the server system to the mobile device indicating that the identity or age of the user is verified;

subsequent to obtaining the consumer validation code, obtaining user selection of a first controlled product of the plurality of controlled products;

in accordance with the consumer validation code and the user selection, causing the dispensing mechanism to dispense the first controlled product.

2. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the input peripheral is a scanning device communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture.

3. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are products for which usage is controlled by an age restriction.

4. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are tobacco products, vaping products, and/or electronic cigarettes.

5. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the image data corresponds to a driver's license of the user and/or an image of the user's face.

6. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for:

storing verification data of the user based on the verifying of the identity or age of the user; and

transmitting subsequent approval data to the mobile device for subsequent dispense approval operations based in part on the verification data.

7. The controlled dispensing system of claim 6 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for transmitting the subsequent approval data to the mobile device before the mobile device is present at a location of the dispensing fixture.

8. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the dispense code via the input peripheral includes scanning a visual code displayed on the mobile device.

9. The controlled dispensing system of claim 8 , wherein the visual code is a barcode.

10. The controlled dispensing system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the user selection of the first controlled product includes detecting the user selection on a touchscreen of the dispensing fixture.

11. A method of operating a controlled dispensing system, the method comprising:

at a server system including one or more processors and communicatively coupled to a dispensing fixture and a mobile device of a user via a communication network:

prior to receiving from the mobile device any requests to reserve or select any of the plurality of controlled products:

receiving from the mobile device image data corresponding to an identification document or face of the user of the mobile device;

verifying an identity or age of the user based on the image data received from the mobile device; and

in accordance with the verifying of the identity or age of the user, transmitting to the mobile device consumer validation data including an indication that the identity or age of the user is verified;

at the dispensing fixture, the dispensing fixture including one or more processors, an input peripheral, a plurality of controlled products, and a dispensing mechanism:

prior to receiving any product selections from the user, scanning via the input peripheral a visual consumer validation code displayed on the mobile device, wherein the consumer validation code corresponds to the consumer validation data transmitted from the server system to the mobile device indicating that the identity or age of the user is verified;

subsequent to obtaining the consumer validation code, obtaining user selection of a first controlled product of the plurality of controlled products;

in accordance with the consumer validation code and the user selection, sending an instruction via the one or more processors to the dispensing mechanism causing the dispensing mechanism to dispense the first controlled product.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the input peripheral is a scanning device communicatively coupled to the dispensing fixture.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are products for which usage is controlled by an age restriction.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of controlled products are tobacco products, vaping products, and/or electronic cigarettes.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the image data corresponds to a driver's license of the user and/or an image of the user's face.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for:

storing verification data of the user based on the verifying of the identity or age of the user; and

transmitting subsequent approval data to the mobile device for subsequent dispense approval operations based in part on the verification data.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the one or more programs stored in the one or more processors of the server further include instructions for transmitting the subsequent approval data to the mobile device before the mobile device is present at a location of the dispensing fixture.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein obtaining the dispense code via the input peripheral includes scanning a visual code displayed on the mobile device.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the visual code is a barcode.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein obtaining the user selection of the first controlled product includes detecting the user selection on a touchscreen of the dispensing fixture.
