Abstract

Example implementations include a method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium comprising receiving, by a processor of at least one sensor device, a signal from a sensor element of the at least one sensor device, wherein the sensor element is configured to sense a physical phenomenon, wherein the signal is indicative of the physical phenomenon as sensed by the sensor element; determining, by the processor of the at least one sensor device, whether a level of the signal is indicative of an alarm condition; and using a cellular radio of the at least one sensor device to send a notification directly to a cloud system in response to the level of the signal being indicative of the alarm condition.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor of a first sensor device, a signal from a sensor element of the first sensor device, wherein the sensor element is configured to sense a physical phenomenon, wherein the signal is indicative of the physical phenomenon as sensed by the sensor element;

determining, by the processor of the first sensor device, whether a level of the signal is indicative of an alarm condition; and

using a first cellular radio of the first sensor device to send a notification directly to a cloud system in response to the level of the signal being indicative of the alarm condition, wherein the cloud system supports a virtualized control panel that allows for configuring a geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system that includes at least the first sensor device and a second sensor device that includes a second cellular radio configured for communicating with the geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system, wherein the geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system provides different geographical granularity at different hierarchical levels, wherein the first sensor device and the second sensor device are located at two different buildings, wherein at a first hierarchical level, the virtualized control panel is configured to indicate whether there are any issues reported at any of the two different buildings, while at a second hierarchical level that provides more geographical granularity than the first hierarchical level, the virtualized control panel is configured to provide further details of issues reported from a specific building in which an issue was detected and reported.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first cellular radio is operable according to narrowband Internet of things “NB-IoT” protocol.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor device comprises a fire detection device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a virtual control panel is configured to communicate with the cloud system to interact with or configure the first sensor device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the virtual control panel is implemented as a cloud-based application executable on a user device.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the two different buildings include two different power grid substations, two different high voltage transmission towers, or two different state park entrance kiosks.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device is configured to communicate directly with the cloud system.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the virtual control panel is configured to communicate with the cloud system to configure each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the virtual control panel is configured to communicate with the cloud system to receive information communicated by each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

10. A system comprising:

a first sensor device that includes:

a sensor element configured to sense a physical phenomenon;

a first cellular radio;

a memory; and

a processor communicatively coupled with the memory and configured to:

receive a signal from the sensor element, wherein the signal is indicative of the physical phenomenon as sensed by the sensor element;

determine whether a level of the signal is indicative of an alarm condition; and

use the first cellular radio to send a notification directly to a cloud system in response to the level of the signal being indicative of the alarm condition, wherein the cloud system supports a virtualized control panel that allows for configuring a geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system that includes at least the first sensor device and a second sensor device that includes a second cellular radio configured for communicating with the geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system, wherein the geographically-distributed hierarchical security and/or automation system provides different geographical granularity at different hierarchical levels, wherein the first sensor device and the second sensor device are located at two different buildings, wherein at a first hierarchical level, the virtualized control panel is configured to indicate whether there are any issues reported at any of the two different buildings, while at a second hierarchical level that provides more geographical granularity than the first hierarchical level, the virtualized control panel is configured to provide further details of issues reported from a specific building in which an issue was detected and reported.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein at the second hierarchical level that provides more geographical granularity than the first hierarchical level, the virtualized control panel is configured to provide further details of the issue reported from a specific room in the specific building.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first cellular radio is operable according to narrowband Internet of things “NB-IoT” protocol.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first sensor device comprises a fire detection device.

14. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a virtual control panel configured to communicate with the cloud system to interact with or configure the first sensor device and/or the second sensor device.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the virtual control panel is implemented as a cloud-based application executable on a user device.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the two different buildings include two different power grid substations, two different high voltage transmission towers, or two different state park entrance kiosks.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device is configured to communicate directly with the cloud system.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the virtual control panel is configured to communicate with the cloud system to configure each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the virtual control panel is configured to communicate with the cloud system to receive information communicated by each one of the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor of a first sensor device, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause to the processor to:

receive, by the processor of the first sensor device, a signal from a sensor element of the first sensor device, wherein the sensor element is configured to sense a physical phenomenon, wherein the signal is indicative of the physical phenomenon as sensed by the sensor element;

determine, by the processor of the first sensor device, whether a level of the signal is indicative of an alarm condition; and
