Abstract

The technology described in this document can be embodied in a computer-implemented method that includes receiving, at one or more servers from a first computing device, (i) first identification information identifying the first computing device or an application executing on the first computing device, and (ii) second identification information identifying a second computing device. The second identification information is obtained by the first computing device by detecting changes to one or more parameters of a magnetic field generated by the second computing device. The method also includes determining, by the server based on the first information, identity information of a user associated with the first computing device, and transmitting, from the one or more servers to the second computing device, the identity information, such that the identity information is usable by the second computing device to verify an access attempt by the user.

Claims (43)

1. A method for verifying a user at a kiosk device, the method comprising:

capturing, using one or more sensors of the kiosk device, first information about a user attempting to access the kiosk device;

changing, by the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a magnetic field generated by the kiosk device to encode identification information of the kiosk device into a magnetic signal that is detected by a mobile device associated with the user,

wherein the magnetic signal comprises frequency shift keying (FSK) modulated magnetic waves decodable by a receiver in the mobile device via use of aliasing, wherein frequencies used in the FSK modulated magnetic waves are higher than a sampling rate associated with the receiver in the mobile device;

receiving, from one or more servers by the kiosk device, second information identifying a user of the mobile device that detects the changes in the one or more parameters of the magnetic field;

verifying, by the kiosk device based on the first information and the second information, that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device; and

responsive to verifying that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device, granting the user access to the kiosk device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises changing, by an electric circuit electrically coupled to a conductor disposed around a magnetic core of the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a current flowing through the conductor.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises changing at least one of a strength of the magnetic field and a direction of the magnetic field.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises generating the magnetic signal comprising binary data encoded using a modulation technique, the binary data comprising the identification information of the kiosk device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the binary data is temporally encoded using indicators of signal bursts, the signal bursts generated using a signal compression method.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein generating the magnetic signal comprises generating a near-field magnetic induction (NFMI) signal.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors of the kiosk device comprises one or more image sensors or biometric sensors, and wherein capturing the first information about the user comprises capturing an image or other biometric information of the user.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the second information from the one or more servers comprises receiving an image of the user captured during an enrollment process.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to receiving a signal indicating that the user is within a threshold distance from the kiosk device,

communicating, by a beacon of the kiosk device, with the mobile device to awaken the mobile device.

10. A system comprising:

a kiosk device comprising one or more processing devices and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more processing devices, to cause the one or more processing devices to perform operations comprising:

capturing, using one or more sensors of the kiosk device, first information about a user attempting to access the kiosk device;

changing, by the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a magnetic field generated by the kiosk device to encode identification information of the kiosk device into a magnetic signal that is detected by a mobile device associated with the user,

wherein the magnetic signal comprises frequency shift keying (FSK) modulated magnetic waves decodable by a receiver in the mobile device via use of aliasing, wherein frequencies used in the FSK modulated magnetic waves are higher than a sampling rate associated with the receiver in the mobile device;

receiving from one or more servers, second information identifying a user of the mobile device that detects the changes in the one or more parameters of the magnetic field;

verifying, based on the first information and the second information, that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device; and

responsive to verifying that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device, granting the user access to the kiosk device.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises changing, by an electric circuit electrically coupled to a conductor disposed around a magnetic core of the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a current flowing through the conductor.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises changing at least one of a strength of the magnetic field and a direction of the magnetic field.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises generating the magnetic signal comprising binary data encoded using a modulation technique, the binary data comprising the identification information of the kiosk device.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the binary data is temporally encoded using indicators of signal bursts, the signal bursts generated using a signal compression method.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein generating the magnetic signal comprises generating a near-field magnetic induction (NFMI) signal.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more sensors of the kiosk device comprises one or more image sensors or biometric sensors, and wherein capturing the first information about the user comprises capturing an image or other biometric information of the user.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein receiving the second information from the one or more servers comprises receiving an image of the user captured during an enrollment process.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in response to receiving a signal indicating that the user is within a threshold distance from the kiosk device,

communicating, by a beacon of the kiosk device, with the mobile device to awaken the mobile device.

19. One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage devices coupled to one or more processors of a kiosk device and having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

capturing, using one or more sensors of the kiosk device, first information about a user attempting to access the kiosk device;

changing, by the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a magnetic field generated by the kiosk device to encode identification information of the kiosk device into a magnetic signal that is detected by a mobile device associated with the user,

wherein the magnetic signal comprises frequency shift keying (FSK) modulated magnetic waves decodable by a receiver in the mobile device via use of aliasing, wherein frequencies used in the FSK modulated magnetic waves are higher than a sampling rate associated with the receiver in the mobile device;

receiving from one or more servers, second information identifying a user of the mobile device that detects the changes in the one or more parameters of the magnetic field;

verifying, based on the first information and the second information, that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device; and

responsive to verifying that the user attempting to access the kiosk device is the user of the mobile device, granting the user access to the kiosk device.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable storage devices of claim 19 , wherein changing the one or more parameters of the magnetic field comprises changing, by an electric circuit electrically coupled to a conductor disposed around a magnetic core of the kiosk device, one or more parameters of a current flowing through the conductor.
