Abstract

A pedicle screw assembly including a bone fastener having a lower end for engaging bone and an upper end remote from the lower end; a head having a rod-receiving channel attached to the upper end of said bone fastener; a spinal rod insertable into the rod-receiving channel of said head, said spinal rod having an outer surface extending between first and second ends thereof, wherein at least one of the first and second ends has a reduced diameter section. A spinal rod having an outer surface extending between a first end and a second end thereof; wherein the outer surface of said spinal rod has a reduced diameter section at at least one of the first and second ends.

Claims (39)

1. A method of inserting a spinal rod, comprising the steps of:

implanting a first pedicle screw in a first vertebral body;

implanting a second pedicle screw in a second vertebral body;

selecting a spinal rod from a plurality of spinal rods;

attaching the spinal rod to a collapsible ball socket received in an opening of an inserter tool;

after the attaching step, moving the collapsible ball socket with respect to the opening, the insertion tool remaining uncoupled from the first and second pedicle screws;

tightening a clamping tip to fix the collapsible ball socket with respect to the opening; and

inserting the spinal rod in the first and second pedicle screws.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moving step includes loosening the compressible clamping tip of the insertion tool to permit the collapsible ball socket to move with respect to the opening.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the attaching step includes inserting a reduced diameter portion of the spinal rod in the collapsible ball socket.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the compressible clamping tip includes a first section having a proximal end and a distal end, a flexible arm and an opening disposed between the first section and the flexible arm.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of tightening the compressible clamping tip includes retracting the clamping tip.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the loosening and tightening steps include rotating a knob.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selecting step includes selecting the spinal rod from a plurality of curved rods.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of rods includes an alignment marker for identifying an axis of curvature.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting step includes minimally invasively placing the rod in the first and second pedicle screws.

10. A method of inserting a spinal rod, comprising the steps of:

selecting a spinal rod from a plurality of spinal rods;

attaching a reduced diameter portion of the spinal rod to a collapsible ball socket of an inserter tool;

after the attaching step, moving the spinal rod with respect to the insertion tool, the movement including rotating the collapsible ball socket with respect to a portion of the inserter tool;

tightening a clamping tip to fix the collapsible ball socket with respect to the opening; and

inserting the spinal rod in the body of a patient.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving step includes loosening a compressible clamping tip of the insertion tool to permit the collapsible ball socket to move.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the clamping tip includes a first section having a proximal end and a distal end, a flexible arm and an opening disposed between the first section and the flexible arm.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of tightening the compressible clamping tip includes retracting the clamping tip.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the loosening and tightening steps include rotating a knob.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the selecting step includes selecting the spinal rod from a plurality of curved rods.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of rods includes an alignment marker for identifying an axis of curvature.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the inserting step includes minimally invasively placing the rod in first and second pedicle screws implanted in different vertebral bodies.

18. A method of inserting a spinal rod, comprising the steps of:

implanting a first pedicle screw in a first vertebral body;

implanting a second pedicle screw in a second vertebral body;

selecting a spinal rod from a plurality of spinal rods;

actuating an inserter tool to permit a reduced diameter portion of the spinal rod to be placed in a collapsible ball socket of a compressible clamping tip of the insertion tool;

actuating the inserter tool to clamp the clamping tip to fix the collapsible ball socket;

after the attaching step, actuating the inserter tool to permit the spinal rod to move with respect to the insertion tool, the insertion tool remaining uncoupled from the first and second pedicle screws; and

inserting the spinal rod in the first and second pedicle screws.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the clamping tip includes a first section having a proximal end and a distal end, a flexible arm and an opening disposed between the first section and the flexible arm.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the selecting step includes selecting the spinal rod from a plurality of curved rods each having an alignment marker for identifying an axis of curvature.
