Abstract

Implants, systems, and methods for securing a flexible band, thereby providing a desired correction to the spine. The implant may secure the flexible band to patient anatomy without the use of pedicle screws or spinal rods. The implant may include a locking member configured to secure the band. The band may be looped around bony anatomy and tensioned to achieve correction and provide fixation as an alternative to pedicle screws and spinal rods during spinal deformity surgery.

Claims (25)

1. A band clamp implant assembly comprising:

a band clamp including a main body, a threaded locking member, a band slot, and an anchor slot, wherein the main body includes a mating recess; and

a flexible band having a first end, a second end, and a middle portion therebetween, wherein a leader is attached to the first end, an anchor is attached to the second end, and the middle portion is configured to contact bone, wherein the anchor is configured to engage the mating recess, wherein the leader is configured to loop around patient anatomy and pass through the band slot, and wherein the threaded locking member is configured to lock the flexible band in the band clamp

wherein the anchor has a cut to allow the anchor to contact to enter the anchor slot and then expand to be received into the mating recess.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the leader is configured to pass through the anchor slot until the anchor engages with the mating recess, the leader further configured to wrap around patient anatomy and then be inserted into the band slot to create a loop around the patient anatomy with the middle portion of the flexible band.

3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the locking member locks the flexible band to the main body of the band clamp after the leader is passed through the band slot.

4. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein tension is provided to the flexible band prior to the locking member locking the flexible band to the band clamp.

5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the locking member is threaded into the main body of the band clamp.

6. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein the locking member includes a threaded set screw and a saddle.

7. The assembly of claim 6 , wherein the threaded set screw is configured to receive the saddle via a slot in the threaded set screw.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the saddle engages the flexible band to lock the flexible band in the band clamp.

9. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the anchor slot is disposed under the band slot.

10. A system for fixating adjacent vertebral bodies, said system comprising:

a band clamp including a main body, a threaded locking member, a band slot, and an anchor slot, wherein the main body includes a mating recess;

a flexible band having a first end, a second end, and a middle portion therebetween, wherein a leader is attached to the first end, an anchor is attached to the second end, and the middle portion is configured to contact bone, wherein the anchor is configured to engage the mating recess, wherein the leader is configured to loop around patient anatomy and pass through the band slot, and wherein the threaded locking member is configured to lock the flexible band in the band clamp; and

a tensioning instrument configured to provide tension to the flexible band prior to locking the flexible band in the band clamp

wherein the anchor has a cut to allow the anchor to contact to enter the anchor slot and then expand to be received into the mating recess.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the leader is configured to pass through the anchor slot until the anchor engages with the mating recess, the leader further configured to wrap around patient anatomy and then be inserted into the band slot to create a loop around the patient anatomy with the middle portion of the flexible band.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the locking member locks the flexible band to the main body of the band clamp after the leader is passed through the band slot.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the tensioning instrument is a ratcheting tensioner connected to an instrument assembly.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the locking member is threaded into the main body of the band clamp.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the locking member includes a threaded set screw and a saddle.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the threaded set screw is configured to receive the saddle via a slot in the threaded set screw.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the saddle engages the flexible band to lock the flexible band in the band clamp.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the anchor slot is disposed under the band slot.
