Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a composition that includes a film having a network of randomly aligned carbon nanotubes, where the carbon nanotubes have an average diameter between about 0.6 nm and about 2.0 nm and the carbon nanotubes form bundles having an average diameter between about 3 nm and about 50 nm. In addition, the composition is characterized by a power factor α 2 σ between 1 μW/mK 2 and about 3500 μW/mK 2 and by ZT=α 2 σT/k between about 0.02 and about 2.0 over a temperature range between about 100 K and about 500 K.

Claims (32)

1. A composition comprising:

a film comprising a network of randomly aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and a solvent, wherein:

the SWCNTs have an endohedral volume,

at least a portion of the solvent is positioned within the endohedral volume,

the SWCNTs have an average diameter between 0.8 nm and 1.25 nm,

the SWCNTs are essentially free of a polymer,

the composition is characterized by a power factor α 2 σ between 20 μW/mK 2 and about 60 μW/mK 2 over a temperature range between about 100 K and about 360 K,

the composition is characterized by ZT=α 2 σT/k between about 0.002 and about 0.088 over the temperature range, and

where α is the Seebeck coefficient, σ is the electrical conductivity, k is the thermal conductivity, and T is temperature.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the film has a thickness between about 20 nm and 200 m.

3. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a density of junctions between orthogonally aligned carbon nanotubes or carbon nanotube bundles, as measured by atomic force microscopy.

4. The composition of claim 1 , the SWCNTs further comprise a dopant comprising a strongly reducing molecule or a strongly oxidizing molecule.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the dopant comprises at least one of Cl 6 Sb, F 4 -TCNQ, or a dodecaborane cluster.

6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the dopant or the solvent has a freezing point temperature in a temperature range between about 100 K and about 400 K.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the solvent comprises at least one of an alkane, an aromatic, a conjugated solvent, or a halogenated hydrocarbon.

8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the alkane comprises at least one of hexane, dodecane, hexadecane, or cis-decalin.

9. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the at least one aromatic or conjugated solvent comprises at least one of toluene, chlorobenzene, or 1,2-dichlorobenzene.

10. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the halogenated hydrocarbon comprises at least one of 1,1-dichloromethane, chloroform, or 1,2-dichloroethane.

11. A method comprising:

synthesizing single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by a high-pressure disproportionation of carbon monoxide method;

separating the SWCNTs from a raw soot using a polymer;

treating the SWCNTs with at least one of a solvent or a mild acid;

immersing the SWCNTs in a mixture of a solvent and a dopant; and

depositing the SWNTs to form a film of randomly aligned SWCNTs, wherein:

the treating removes the polymer from a surface of the carbon nanotubes,

the SWCNTs have an endohedral volume,

the solvent is positioned within the endohedral volume,

the SWCNTs have an average diameter between 0.8 nm and 1.25 nm,

the SWCNTs are essentially free of the polymer,

the composition is characterized by a power factor α 2 σ between 20 μW/mK 2 and about 60 μW/mK 2 over a temperature range between about 100 K and about 360 K,

the composition is characterized by ZT=α 2 σT/k between about 0.002 and about 0.088 over the temperature range, and

where α is the Seebeck coefficient, σ is the electrical conductivity, k is the thermal conductivity, and T is temperature.
