Abstract

A housing of a conformal wearable battery (CWB) encloses a plurality of battery cells arranged in a grid-like pattern and electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB). The PCB includes an electrical connection pad that is electrically coupled to a positive terminal of a battery cell of the plurality of battery cells and a positive conductive region receiving electrical energy from one or more of the plurality of battery cells. A redundant trace fuse circuit is formed on the PCB to facilitate electrical connection of the electrical connection pad and the positive conductive region. The redundant trace fuse circuit includes a first fusible link for electrically connecting the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region and a second fusible link that is selectively enabled to electrically connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region when the first fusible link is inoperative.

Claims (72)

1. A conformal wearable battery with at least one redundant trace fuse circuit, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells arranged in a grid-like pattern, wherein each battery cell of the plurality of battery cells comprises a positive terminal and a negative terminal to provide electricity through a transfer of electrons between the positive terminal and the negative terminal;

a housing with an interior cavity that receives the plurality of battery cells;

a printed circuit board, comprising:

a first electrical connection pad coupled to the positive terminal of a first battery cell of the plurality of battery cells;

a positive conductive region receiving electrical energy via the positive terminals of one or more second battery cells of the plurality of battery cells;

a first redundant trace fuse circuit of the at least one redundant trace fuse circuit comprising:

a first fusible link electrically connecting the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region, wherein the first fusible link is integral to the printed circuit board such that the first fusible link is irreparable once blown; and

a second fusible link that is selectively enabled to electrically connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region;

a plurality of physical connection sections disposed in a grid like pattern, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells is physically affixed to the printed circuit board at a corresponding physical connection section of the plurality of physical connection sections;

a plurality of flexible regions distributed between the physical connection sections disposed in the grid like pattern, wherein the plurality of flexible regions allows the conformal wearable battery to flex in response to an applied force;

a plurality of first cut-outs disposed along a bend axis, wherein the bend axis is disposed between two of the plurality of physical connection sections, wherein a longer edge of each first cut-out of the plurality of first cut-outs is disposed parallel to the bend axis; and

a plurality of second cut-outs disposed in pairs along a flex line perpendicular to the bend axis, wherein each pair of the plurality of second cut-outs facilitate an electrical connection, to the printed circuit board, of an associated battery cell of the plurality of battery cells.

2. The conformal wearable battery of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises:

a second electrical connection pad coupled to the negative terminal of the first battery cell of the plurality of battery cells;

a negative conductive region receiving electrical energy via the one or more negative terminals of one or more third battery cells of the plurality of battery cells; and

a second redundant trace fuse circuit comprising:

a third fusible link electrically connecting the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region; and

a fourth fusible link to selectively electrically connect the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region.

The conformal wearable battery of claim 1 , wherein the first fusible link comprises a section of conductor configured to become inoperative after a current in excess of a threshold amount is passed to the section of conductor, wherein the first redundant trace fuse circuit comprises a plurality of conductive paths to connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region, and wherein each of the plurality of conductive paths are connected independently from the other.

The conformal wearable battery of claim 3 , wherein a first conductive path of the plurality of conductive paths comprises a fuse element and a first pair of electrically separated conductive pads, wherein the fuse element is enabled via connection of a jumper between the first pair of electrically separated conductive pads.

The conformal wearable battery of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises: a plurality of electrical connection pad pairs, wherein each pad pair of the plurality of electrical connection pad pairs comprises an adjacent pair of electrical connection pads that is associated with a corresponding physical connection section, and is aligned parallel to a corresponding flexible region, wherein the plurality of electrical connection pad pairs comprises a first electrical connection pad pair and a second electrical connection pad pair and wherein the first electrical connection pad belongs to one of the first electrical connection pad pair or the second electrical connection pad pair.

6. A conformable wearable battery, comprising:

a pair of electrical connection pads, wherein a first electrical connection pad is coupled to a positive terminal of a first battery cell of a plurality of battery cells and a second electrical connection pad is coupled to a negative terminal of the first battery cell of the plurality of battery cells;

a positive conductive region receiving electrical energy via positive terminals of one or more second battery cells of the plurality of battery cells;

a negative conductive region receiving electrical energy via negative terminals of one or more third battery cells of the plurality of battery cells;

a plurality of first redundant trace fuse circuits, wherein each trace fuse circuit comprises:

a first fusible link that electrically connects the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region; and

a second fusible link that is selectively enabled to electrically connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region; and

a flexible printed circuit board assembly comprising:

a plurality of physical connection sections disposed in a grid like pattern, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells is physically affixed to the flexible printed circuit board assembly at a corresponding physical connection section of the plurality of physical connection sections;

a plurality of first cut-outs disposed across a bend axis, wherein the bend axis is disposed between two of the plurality of physical connection sections, wherein a longer edge of each of the plurality of first cut-outs is disposed perpendicular to the bend axis; and

a plurality of second cut-outs disposed in pairs along a flex line perpendicular to the bend axis, wherein each pair of the plurality of second cut-outs facilitate an electrical connection, to the flexible printed circuit board assembly, of an associated battery cell of the plurality of battery cells.

7. The conformable wearable battery of claim 6 , comprising:

a second redundant trace fuse circuit comprising:

a third fusible link electrically connecting the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region; and

a fourth fusible link to selectively electrically connect the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region.

The conformable wearable battery of claim 6 , wherein the first fusible link comprises a section of conductor capable of transferring heat energy from the first electrical connection pad to the section of conductor, wherein the second fusible link comprises a plurality of conductive paths to connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region, wherein each of the plurality of conductive paths are connected independently from the other.

The conformable wearable battery of claim 8 , wherein a first conductive path of the plurality of conductive paths comprises a fuse element and a first pair of electrically separated conductive pads, wherein the fuse element is enabled via connection of a jumper between the first pair of electrically separated conductive pads.

10. The conformable wearable battery of claim 8 , wherein a first conductive path of the plurality of conductive paths comprises a pair of electrically separated conductive pads, wherein the first conductive path is enabled via connection of an external fuse component.

11. The conformal wearable battery of claim 6 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises:

a flexible printed circuit board;

a plurality of electrical connection pad pairs, wherein each pad pair of the plurality of electrical connection pad pairs comprises an adjacent pair of electrical connection pads that is associated with a corresponding physical connection section, and is aligned parallel to a corresponding flexible region, wherein the plurality of electrical connection pad pairs comprises a first electrical connection pad pair and a second electrical connection pad pair and wherein the first electrical connection pad belongs to one of the first electrical pad pair or the second electrical pad pair;

wherein a first pair of electrically conductive elements, of a fourth battery cell, extends through the flexible printed circuit board, wherein the first pair of electrically conductive elements are electrically connected to the first electrical connection pad pair; and

wherein an edge of the flexible printed circuit board around which a second pair of electrically conductive elements, of a fifth battery cell, wraps, wherein the second pair of electrically conductive elements are electrically connected to adjacent pads of the second electrical connection pad pair.

12. The conformal wearable battery of claim 6 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises:

a plurality of third cut-outs disposed along the bend axis, wherein a longer edge of each of the plurality of third cut-outs is disposed perpendicular to the bend axis.

13. The conformal wearable battery of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises:

a plurality of third cut-outs disposed across the bend axis, wherein a longer edge of each of the plurality of third cut-outs is disposed perpendicular to the bend axis.

14. The conformal wearable battery of claim 5 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises a flexible printed circuit board, and wherein:

a first pair of electrically conductive elements, of a third battery cell, extends through the flexible printed circuit board, wherein the first pair of electrically conductive elements are electrically connected to the first electrical connection pad pair; and

an edge of the flexible printed circuit board around which a second pair of electrically conductive elements, of a fourth battery cell, wraps, wherein the second pair of electrically conductive elements are electrically connected to the second electrical connection pad pair.

15. A conformal wearable battery comprising:

a pair of electrical connection pads, wherein a first electrical connection pad is coupled to a positive terminal of a first battery cell of a plurality of battery cells and a second electrical connection pad is coupled to a negative terminal of the first battery cell;

a positive conductive region receiving electrical energy via positive terminals of one or more second battery cells of the plurality of battery cells;

a negative conductive region receiving electrical energy via negative terminals of one or more third battery cells of the plurality of battery cells;

a plurality of first redundant trace fuse circuits, wherein each trace fuse circuit comprises:

a first fusible link that electrically connects the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region; and

a second fusible link that is selectively enabled to electrically connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region; and

a flexible printed circuit board assembly that comprises:

a plurality of physical connection sections disposed in a grid like pattern, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells is physically affixed to the flexible printed circuit board at a corresponding physical connection section of the plurality of physical connection sections;

a plurality of first cut-outs disposed along a bend axis, wherein the bend axis is disposed between two of the plurality of physical connection sections;

a plurality of second cut-outs disposed across the bend axis; and

a plurality of third cut-outs disposed in pairs along a flex line that is perpendicular to the bend axis, wherein each pair of the third cut-outs facilitate an electrical connection, to the flexible printed circuit board assembly, of an associated battery cell of the plurality of battery cells.

16. The conformal wearable battery of claim 15 , comprising:

a second redundant trace fuse circuit comprising:

a third fusible link electrically connecting the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region; and

a fourth fusible link to selectively electrically connect the second electrical connection pad to the negative conductive region.

The conformal wearable battery of claim 15 , wherein the first fusible link comprises a section of conductor capable of transferring heat energy from the first electrical connection pad to the section of conductor, wherein the second fusible link comprises a plurality of conductive paths to connect the first electrical connection pad to the positive conductive region, wherein each of the plurality of conductive paths are connected independently from the other.

The conformal wearable battery of claim 17 , wherein a first conductive path of the plurality of conductive paths comprises a fuse element and a first pair of electrically separated conductive pads, wherein the fuse element is enabled via connection of a jumper between the first pair of electrically separated conductive pads.

19. The conformal wearable battery of claim 17 , wherein a first conductive path of the plurality of conductive paths comprises a pair of electrically separated conductive pads, wherein the first conductive path is enabled via connection of an external fuse component.

20. The conformal wearable battery of claim 15 , wherein a longer edge of each first cut-out of the plurality of first cut-outs is disposed parallel to the bend axis, and wherein a longer edge of each second cut-out of the plurality of second cut-outs is disposed perpendicular to the bend axis.
