Abstract

A fastener cartridge can comprise fastener cavities arranged in longitudinal rows. A first fastener having a first configuration and a second fastener having a second configuration can be stored within a longitudinal row. First fasteners having a first configuration can be stored within a first longitudinal row and second fasteners having a second configuration can be stored within a second longitudinal row. Each first fastener can have a proximal leg, or leg portion, extending at a first proximal angle and a distal leg, or leg portion, extending at a first distal angle and each second fastener can have a proximal leg, or leg portion, extending at a second proximal angle and a distal leg, or leg portion, extending at a second distal angle. The first proximal angle can be different than the second proximal angle and/or the first distal angle can be different than the second distal angle.

Claims (41)

1. An anvil for use with a surgical stapling assembly, the anvil comprising:

a tissue-clamping surface, wherein a longitudinal knife slot extends at least partially through the tissue-clamping surface, and wherein the tissue-clamping surface comprises:

a first step positioned on a first side of the longitudinal knife slot, wherein the first step defines a first tissue-facing plane;

a second step positioned on the first side of the longitudinal knife slot, wherein the second step is taller than the first step, and wherein the second step defines a second tissue-facing plane;

a third step positioned on the first side of the longitudinal knife slot, wherein the third step is taller than the second step; and

staple-forming pockets, wherein each staple-forming pocket comprises an opening defined into one of the first tissue-facing plane and the second tissue-facing plane.

2. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the third step does not comprise a staple-forming pocket.

3. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the third step comprises a tissue-engaging projection.

4. The anvil of claim 3 , wherein the tissue-engaging projection is configured to limit lateral movement of a staple leg during a forming operation.

5. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the second step is positioned adjacent to the longitudinal knife slot.

6. The anvil of claim 1 , further comprising a ramp extending between the first step and the second step.

7. The anvil of claim 1 , further comprising a transition between the second step and the third step.

8. A surgical assembly, comprising:

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a portion of a firing member;

an anvil, comprising:

staple-forming pockets;

a tissue-facing surface defining:

a first tissue-facing plane positioned on a first side of the longitudinal slot, wherein a first portion of the staple-forming pockets comprise first openings defined into the first tissue-facing plane;

a second tissue-facing plane positioned on the first side of the longitudinal slot, wherein a second portion of the staple-forming pockets comprise second openings defined into the second tissue-facing plane, wherein the second tissue-facing plane is vertically offset from the first tissue-facing plane; and

a third tissue-facing plane positioned on the first side of the longitudinal slot and without staple-forming pockets defined therein, wherein the third tissue-facing plane is vertically offset from the first tissue-facing plane and the second tissue-facing plane.

9. The anvil of claim 8 , further comprising a projection extending to the third tissue-facing plane.

10. The anvil of claim 9 , wherein the projection is configured to limit lateral movement of a staple leg during a forming operation.

11. The anvil of claim 8 , wherein the second tissue-facing plane is positioned adjacent to the longitudinal slot.

12. An anvil for use with a surgical instrument, the anvil comprising:

a longitudinal knife slot; and

a stepped tissue-compression surface defining vertically-offset planar surfaces on a first side of the longitudinal knife slot, wherein the vertically-offset planar surfaces comprise:

a first planar surface, wherein first staple-forming pockets are bounded by the first planar surface;

a second planar surface, wherein second staple-forming pockets are bounded by the second planar surface; and

a third planar surface without staple-forming pockets.

13. The anvil of claim 12 , further comprising a projection extending to the third planar surface.

14. The anvil of claim 12 , wherein the second planar surface is positioned adjacent to the longitudinal knife slot.

15. An anvil for a surgical instrument, the anvil comprising:

a longitudinal knife slot; and

a stepped tissue-compression surface defining vertically-offset planar surfaces on a first side of the longitudinal knife slot, wherein the vertically-offset planar surfaces comprise:

a first planar surface, wherein first staple-forming pockets are bounded by the first planar surface;

a second planar surface, wherein second staple-forming pockets are bounded by the second planar surface; and

a third planar surface.

16. The anvil of claim 15 , further comprising a projection extending to the third planar surface.

17. The anvil of claim 15 , wherein the second planar surface is positioned adjacent to the knife slot.

18. The anvil of claim 15 , further comprising a ramp extending between the first planar surface and the second planar surface.

19. The anvil of claim 15 , further comprising a transition between the second planar surface and the third planar surface.
