Abstract

A golf club head includes a body defining an interior cavity. The body includes a sole positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown positioned at a top portion, and a skirt positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown. The body has a forward portion and a rearward portion. The club head includes a face positioned at the forward portion of the body. The face defines a striking surface having an ideal impact location at a golf club head origin. Embodiments include club heads for a fairway wood that at least one of a high moment of inertia, a low center-of-gravity, a thin crown and a high coefficient of restitution. A sleeve for easily disconnecting a shaft to the club head allows for selective adjustment of the head's loft and lie angle.

Claims (50)

1. A golf club head, comprising:

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

a mass pad located on the sole within the interior cavity and positioned proximate the face in a forward portion of the sole; and

at least one weight attached to the sole of the golf club head;

wherein:

the body height is less than about 46 mm;

the face has a loft angle greater than about 13 degrees;

the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) located at an above ground center-of-gravity location (Zup) that is less than about 19.0 mm, a center-of-gravity z-axis extends vertically through the CG, and a center-of-gravity x-axis extends horizontally through the CG in a direction generally tangential to the face at the ideal impact location;

the golf club head has a CG with a head origin x-axis (CGx) coordinate between about −2 mm and about 6 mm and a head origin y-axis (CGy) coordinate no less than 15 mm and no more than 26.1 mm, and a head origin z-axis (CGz) less than 0 mm;

the golf club head has a coefficient of restitution (COR) having a value of at least about 0.80 at a center of the face;

the golf club head has a balance point located on the face and the balance point is no more than 3 mm above the center of the face, and the face has an average face thickness that ranges from about 1.0 mm to about 4.5 mm; and

a volume of the golf club head is less than about 210 cm 3 .

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the coefficient of restitution at the center of the face is 0.81 or greater.

3. The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face and extending substantially in a heel-to-toe direction.

4. The golf club head of claim 3 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a steel alloy and a composite.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a slot positioned in the sole of the club head and extending into an interior cavity of the club head, the slot extending substantially in a heel-to-toe direction.

6. The golf club head of claim 5 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a steel alloy and a composite.

7. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a steel alloy and a titanium alloy.

8. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a titanium alloy and a composite.

9. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a steel alloy, a titanium alloy, and a composite.

10. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed from a combination of a steel alloy and a composite.

11. The golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a sleeve for securing a shaft to the golf club head.

12. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the at least one weight is secured by a mechanical fastener.

13. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the at least one weight is secured by one or more screws.

14. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the at least one weight threadingly engages the sole.

15. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the at least one weight is formed of a material having a higher density than the material used to form the body.

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the at least one weight is formed of a material having a density no more than 19 g/cc.

17. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the at least one weight and the mass pad are each formed of a material having a density no more than 19 g/cc.

18. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the at least one weight further comprises at least two weights and each weight threadingly engages the sole.

19. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion of the golf club head, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery of the golf club head between the sole and the crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and
