Abstract

An agricultural implement includes at least one row unit having a plurality of support members, each of which is pivotably coupled to an attachment frame or another of the support members to permit vertical pivoting vertical movement of the support members, and a plurality of soil-engaging tools, each of which is coupled to at least one of the support members. A plurality of hydraulic cylinders are coupled to the support members for urging the support members downwardly toward the soil. A plurality of controllable pressure control valves are coupled to the hydraulic cylinders for controlling the pressure of hydraulic fluid supplied to the cylinders. A plurality of sensors produce electrical signals corresponding to predetermined conditions, and a controller is coupled to the sensor and the controllable pressure control valves. The controller receives the electrical signals from the sensors and produces control signals for controlling the pressure control valves.

Claims (30)

1. A monitor system for an agricultural seed planter having a plurality of row units, the monitor system comprising:

a controller;

a plurality of row units, each having:

a first soil-engaging tool configured for moving along a soil in a direction of travel;

a first actuator causing the first soil-engaging tool to be urged toward the soil according to a first actuator signal received from the controller as the first soil-engaging tool is moved along the direction of travel, and

a first electronic sensor not in contact with the soil and positioned ahead of the first soil-engaging tool relative to the direction of travel, the first electronic sensor being configured to sense a condition of the soil ahead of the first soil-engaging tool and to provide a sensor signal indicative of the condition to the controller, wherein

the controller is configured to control the first actuator based on the provided sensor signal to adjust in real time a distance or pressure of the first soil-engaging tool relative to the soil as the plurality of row units are moved along the soil.

2. The monitor system of claim 1 , further comprising a video display coupled to the controller that is configured to cause the video display to display, in real time as the plurality of row units are moved along the earth, a graphical representation that indicates the condition of the soil ahead of the first soil-engaging tool.

3. The monitor system of claim 1 , wherein the condition of the soil includes a presence of crop residue on the first soil-engaging tool.

4. The monitor system of claim 3 , wherein the controller is further configured to receive a user-controllable variable including a value for a residue level.

5. The monitor system of claim 3 , wherein the controller or another controller is configured to adjust the first soil-engaging tool in response to the sensor signal or to adjust an other tool of the seed planter in response to the sensor signal.

6. The monitor system of claim 5 , wherein the first soil-engaging tool is a gauge wheel and the adjustment includes adjusting stops on the gauge wheel.

7. The monitor system of claim 6 , wherein the other tool is a vee-opener and the adjustment includes adjusting a blade depth of the vee-opener.

8. An agricultural seed planter having the monitor system of claim 1 , the agricultural seed planter including a cab.

9. The monitor system of claim 8 , further comprising a weatherproof camera system and a graphical user interface (GUI) in the cab and coupled to the controller or another controller, the GUI being configured to display, in real time as the plurality of row units are moved along the earth, a feed of the weatherproof camera system.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the GUI is further configured to display any one or more of: overall performance, power consumption, system pressure, or an error associated with a tool of the agricultural seed planter, including the first soil-engaging tool, the GUI being located in a cab of the agricultural seed planter.

11. The system of claim 9 , the controller being further configured to send error information to a mobile phone or a text-enabled wireless device.

12. The system of claim 9 , the GUI being configured to display an interactive map of a field being planted by the agricultural seed planter, the interactive map including indicia of soil conditions in the field or in-field obstacles.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the electronic sensor is an auxiliary sensor.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the electronic sensor is an analog sensor, a digital sensor, a laser rangefinder, or an ultrasonic sensor.

15. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a camera positioned relative to the agricultural seed planter to permit an operator in the cab to visually inspect in real-time an obstacle or other condition of a field being traversed by the agricultural seed planter.

16. The monitor system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic sensor is a ground-hardness sensor, a linear inductor sensor, an analog sensor, a digital sensor, an inductive proximity sensor, a pressure transducer, a pressure sensor, a load cell, a strain gauge, a position sensor, a load sensor, a soil-hardness sensor, a relative displacement sensor, a laser rangefinder, an ultrasonic sensor, a biased proximity switch, a furrow-opener position sensor, a photogate, a rangefinder, a row unit load sensor, a row cleaner load sensor, a row unit position sensor, a furrow closer position sensor, a furrow closer pressure transducer, or a displacement sensor.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor signal is synchronized with a GPS signal to develop a graphical representation of the field.

18. A row cleaner device configured to control an amount of plant residue or soil on a surface of a field that the row cleaner device is pushing away in front of a row unit of an agricultural seed planter, the row cleaner device comprising:

a gauge wheel positioned to run over the top of the soil or plant residue that is in front of the row cleaner device, the gauge wheel establishing a profile of the field;

a hydraulically or electrically force or pressure controlled row cleaner device that is positioned to run behind the gauge wheel in a direction of movement of the row cleaner device; and

an angle or distance sensor configured to measure a relative distance between the gauge wheel and the row cleaner device.

19. The row cleaner device of claim 18 in combination with the monitor system of claim 1 forming a system, wherein the sensor signal is used to automatically adjust a force applied to or released from the row cleaner device based upon how much plant residue or soil is on the surface of the field.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein aperiodic oscillations of the sensor signal are synchronized with a GPS signal to develop a graphical representation of the field including locations of excessive moisture in the soil.

21. The system of claim 19 , further comprising a second sensor configured to monitor a soil moisture parameter, an output of the second sensor being used to automatically adjust the force applied to or released from the row cleaner device.
