Abstract

Claims (36)

1 . An electronic eyewear frame comprising:

a first temple having a first cavity formed therein;

a first electronic module disposed in the first cavity, the first electronic module comprising a printed circuit board (PCB), at least one electronic component mounted to the PCB, an electrical connector mounted to the PCB, and a flexible circuit electrically coupled to the PCB, wherein the flexible circuit extends in the first cavity parallel to the PCB and is positioned between the PCB and a surface of the temple that faces away from a wearer of the electronic eyewear frame;

a second temple having a second cavity formed therein;

a second electronic module disposed in the second cavity;

a frame front operably coupled to the first temple via a first hinge and operably coupled to the second temple via a second hinge, the frame front comprising rims to hold lenses; and

a front conductive element embedded in the frame front, routed through the rims around the lenses, and providing at least part of a conductive pathway to electrically couple the first electronic module and the second electronic module, the conductive pathway including at least one flexible cable bypassing the first hinge and the second hinge,

wherein the first electronic module is configured to communicate with the second electronic module via the conductive pathway.

2 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the front conductive element is molded into the frame front.

3 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic module comprises a processor, a speaker, and a visible light output module.

4 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 3 , further comprising:

an antenna to provide wireless communication between the processor and a mobile device.

5 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first electronic module or the second electronic module comprises at least one of a gyroscope or an accelerometer coupled to the processor and configured to act as an electronic switch.

6 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the first electronic module or the second electronic module further comprises a manual switch.

7 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the second electronic module comprises a rechargeable battery and a speaker.

8 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic module comprises a vibration output module.

9 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , further comprising:

a microphone to receive voice commands from a wearer of the electronic eyewear frame.

10 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flexible cable comprises:

a first flexible conductive cable disposed between the first electronic module and the front conductive element and around the first hinge.

11 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 10 , wherein the at least one flexible cable further comprises:

a second flexible conductive cable disposed between the second electronic module and the front conductive element and around the second hinge.

12 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the first temple and the second temple each comprise a moisture resistant seal.

13 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic module comprises a processor, a speaker, and a microphone; and the second electronic module comprises a rechargeable battery, the rechargeable battery operably coupled to the first electronic module via at least one conductor providing a part of the conductive pathway.

14 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , further comprising:

a microphone, operably coupled to a processor disposed in the first electronic module, to receive a voice command from a wearer of the electronic eyewear frame,

wherein the processor is configured to process the voice command.

15 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 14 , wherein the microphone is a directional microphone.

16 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the conductive pathway bypasses the first hinge and the second hinge around to the front of the electronic eyewear frame.

17 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , further comprising:

an electro-active lens coupled to the frame front.

18 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic module is built into and forms part of the electronic eyewear frame.

19 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the front conductive element is embedded in a right-side upper rim member, a bridge, and a left-side upper rim member of the frame front.

20 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flexible cable extends into the first electronic module to connect to the electrical connector.

21 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein the at least one flexible cable is removably coupled to the first electronic module.

22 . The electronic eyewear frame of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first electronic module or the second electronic module is removable.
