Abstract

A flex wing cutter is equipped with a splitter gearbox and a plurality of drivelines. Each driveline is coupled to the splitter gearbox via a clutch assembly, and supplies power to a drive gearbox and cutting blade assembly on a wing of the flex wing cutter. Each clutch assembly is equipped to an actuator, the actuator configured to selectively engage or disengage the driveline from receiving rotational power from the splitter gearbox. Each actuator can be remotely controlled from a control located in a cab of a towing vehicle, such as a tractor, allowing an operator of the flex wing cutter to remotely deactivate the cutting blade assemblies of either or both wings of a flex wing cutter.

Claims (33)

1. A drive system for a flex wing cutter, comprising:

a splitter gearbox, the splitter gearbox comprising an input shaft and a plurality of output shafts;

a plurality of clutch assemblies, each clutch assembly disposed between the splitter gearbox and one of the plurality of output shafts;

a linear actuator coupled to a first clutch assembly of the clutch assemblies, wherein actuation of the linear actuator moves the first clutch assembly such that the first clutch assembly selectively engages or disengages a corresponding output shaft of the plurality of output shafts to the splitter gearbox; and

a control positioned remote from the flex wing cutter and configured to control actuation of the linear actuator.

2. The drive system of claim 1 , wherein the linear actuator is configured to provide the actuation by extending or retracting based upon a signal from the control.

3. The drive system of claim 1 , wherein the linear actuator is electrically powered.

4. The drive system of claim 1 , wherein the first clutch assembly comprises a clutch fork, mount weldment, and clutch collar, wherein the clutch fork is mechanically coupled to the linear actuator at a first end of the clutch fork and to the mount weldment at a second end of the clutch fork.

5. The drive system of claim 4 , wherein the clutch fork is mechanically coupled to the clutch collar via a plurality of pins and elongated slots such that the actuation of the linear actuator imparts a linear motion to the clutch collar via the clutch fork.

6. The drive system of claim 4 , wherein the clutch fork is mechanically coupled to the clutch collar pivotably such that the actuation of the linear actuator imparts a rotational motion to the clutch collar via the clutch fork.

7. The drive system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of drive gearboxes, each output shaft of the plurality of output shafts engaged to a corresponding drive gearbox of the plurality of drive gearboxes, with each drive gearbox coupled to a mower assembly.

8. The drive system of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of articulated wings, each of the plurality of articulated wings attached to a side of mower deck, and wherein each drive gear box of the plurality of drive gearboxes and its corresponding mower assembly is disposed upon one of the plurality of articulated wings.

9. A farm implement, comprising:

a power source;

a controller coupled to the power source;

a mount point disposed on the power source; and

a flex wing cutter, connected to the mount point, comprising:

a center section with a first side and a second side;

first and second wing sections articulably coupled to the first and second sides of the center section, respectively, each of the first and second wing sections including a drive gearbox;

a splitter gearbox disposed on the center section and rotationally coupled to the power source so that the splitter gearbox receives rotational motion from the power source; and

first and second drivelines respectively associated with and coupled to the drive gearboxes of the first and second wing sections so that the drive gearboxes can receive rotational motion from the first and second drivelines;

wherein the first and second drivelines are each selectably coupled to respective output shafts from the splitter gearbox via first and second mechanical clutches, each mechanical clutch respectively associated with each of the first and second drivelines, selective coupling of each mechanical clutch controlled by the controller.

10. The farm implement of claim 9 , comprising a first linear actuator coupled to the first mechanical clutch and a second linear actuator coupled to the second mechanical clutch, wherein the first linear actuator and the second linear actuator are configured to extend and retract responsive to signals from the controller, and wherein the selective coupling of the first and second mechanical clutches is caused by operation of the first and second a linear actuators.

11. The farm implement of claim 10 , wherein each linear actuator is controlled by the controller via radio communications.

12. The farm implement of claim 9 , wherein the first and second mechanical clutches are each comprised of a clutch fork, mount weldment, and clutch collar, wherein the clutch fork is mechanically coupled to an actuator at a first end, and the mount weldment at a second end.

13. The farm implement of claim 9 , wherein the first and second drivelines are each configured to telescope to change length.

14. The farm implement of claim 9 , wherein the first and second wing sections can each be pivoted up and away from a plane defined by the center section.

15. The farm implement of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to decouple the output shaft of one of the first or second wing sections from the splitter gearbox when the wing section is pivoted.

16. The drive system of claim 1 , comprising a driveline coupled to the first clutch assembly, wherein the control is configured to delay the actuation of the actuator until the driveline is no longer rotating.

17. The drive system of claim 1 , wherein the control is configured to automatically cause the actuation of the linear actuator responsive to lowering of a corresponding wing of the flex wing cutter.

18. The drive system of claim 1 , wherein the control communicates with the linear actuator via a CAN bus.

19. The drive system of claim 1 , further comprising a communication line between the control and the linear actuator.

20. The drive system of claim 19 , wherein the communication line is a pneumatic line or a hydraulic line.
