Abstract

A method for displaying archived exercise classes comprising displaying information about archived exercise classes that can be accessed by a first user via a computer network on a display screen at a first location, wherein the first user can select among a plurality of archived classes, outputting digital video and audio content comprising the selected archived class, detecting a performance parameter for the first user at a particular point in the selected class, displaying the performance parameter on the display screen, and displaying performance parameters from a second user at a second location on the display screen such that at least one of the performance parameters from the first user and at least one of the performance parameters from the second user at the same point in the class are presented for comparison.

Claims (69)

1. A network system, the system comprising:

a plurality of exercise devices connected to a network, the plurality of exercise devices enabling a plurality of users to participate in a previously recorded on-demand exercise class;

sensors associated with the plurality of exercise devices, the sensors to measure physical activity associated with users' exercise during at least a portion of an on-demand exercise class;

a control station to synchronize users' activity information associated with the users' physical activity;

a storage device maintaining previously recorded exercise content for the on-demand exercise class and the activity information associated with users' exercise during the on-demand exercise class;

the on-demand exercise class includes points in time for collecting the activity information associated with a user's exercise during at least a portion of the on-demand exercise class, and wherein the points in time enable synchronization of the collected activity information with the activity information maintained in the storage device;

the control station collecting live activity information during portions of replay of the on-demand exercise class based on the points in time;

the control station synchronizing a portion of the maintained activity information for the on-demand exercise class with a portion of the live activity information according to the points in time; and

the storage device maintaining the live activity information synchronized with the maintained activity information for the on-demand exercise class.

2. The network system of claim 1 , further including a GO signal point, wherein the GO signal point indicates a starting point in the points in time for collection of the live activity information during the replay of the on-demand exercise class.

3. The network system of claim 1 , wherein at least one sensor communicates with a display screen configured to display the exercise content for the on-demand exercise class.

4. The network system of claim 1 , wherein a display screen is configured to:

display the exercise content for the on-demand exercise class; and

display a visual comparison representative of the portion of the live activity information of the user associated with the replay of the on-demand exercise class and the portion of the maintained activity information associated with the on-demand exercise class.

5. The network system of claim 4 , wherein the visual comparison representative of the portion of the live activity information and the portion of the maintained activity information is a leaderboard.

6. The network system of claim 5 , wherein the leaderboard presents the visual comparison graphically.

7. The network system of claim 5 , wherein the portion of the live activity information and the portion of the maintained activity information comprise numerical values and the leaderboard presents a numerically ordered list of the numerical values.

8. The network system of claim 7 , wherein the leaderboard presents a continuously updated numerically ordered list of the portion of the live activity information and the portion of the maintained activity information associated with the on-demand exercise class during at least the portion of the on-demand exercise class.

9. The network system of claim 8 , wherein the portion of the maintained activity information represented on the leaderboard is representative of a ghost athlete.

10. The network system of claim 1 , wherein at least one sensor is coupled to an exercise device of the plurality of exercise devices.

11. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of exercise devices are stationary exercise devices.

12. The network system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the stationary exercise devices is a ghost bicycle.

13. The network system of claim 1 , wherein at least one sensor is on at least one user.

14. The network system of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the sensors measures the portion of the live activity information.

15. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the previously recorded on-demand exercise class is led by at least one instructor.

16. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the maintained activity information is numeric.

17. The network system of claim 1 , wherein at least one sensor is a camera.

18. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device comprises one or more remote servers.

19. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the sensors are connected to the Internet.

20. The network system of claim 1 , wherein the sensors are connected to a peer-to-peer network.

21. A method for enabling users to participate in a previously recorded on-demand exercise class, the method comprising:

sensing physical activity associated with users' exercise during at least a portion of the on-demand exercise class;

synchronizing, at a control station, users' activity information associated with users' physical activity;

maintaining, on a storage device, previously recorded exercise content for the on-demand exercise class and the activity information associated with the users' exercise during the on-demand class;

providing points in time together with the on-demand exercise class, the points in time for collecting activity information associated with a user's exercise during at least a portion of the on-demand class, and wherein the points in time enable synchronization of the collected activity information with the activity information maintained in the storage device;

collecting live activity information during portions of a replay of the on-demand exercise class;

synchronizing a portion of the maintained activity information for the on-demand exercise class with a portion of the live activity information according to the points in time; and

storing, at the storage device, the live activity information synchronized with the maintained activity information for the on-demand class.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

at least one sensor communicating with a display screen configured to display the exercise content for the on-demand exercise class.

23. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

displaying the exercise content for the on-demand exercise class; and

displaying a visual comparison representative of the portion of the live activity information for the replay of the on-demand exercise class and the portion of the maintained activity information of the on-demand exercise class.

24. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

maintaining a portion of the activity information of the user as private, wherein the portion of the activity information maintained as private is not distributed to other users during the replay or subsequent replays of the on-demand exercise class.

25. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

maintaining the portion of the live activity information of the user as available to all users, wherein the portion of the live activity information maintained as available to all users is distributed to other users during the replay or subsequent replays of the on-demand exercise class.

26. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

maintaining the portion of the live activity information of the user as available to a selected user, wherein the portion of the live activity information maintained as available to the selected user is distributed to the selected user during the replay or subsequent replays of the on-demand exercise class.

27. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

maintaining the portion of the live activity information of the user as available to an instructor, wherein the portion of the live activity information maintained as available to the instructor is distributed to one or more instructors during the replay or subsequent replays of the on-demand exercise class.

28. A network system for enabling users to participate in a previously recorded on-demand exercise class, the system comprising:

sensors associated with the users, the sensors to measure physical activity associated with the users' exercise during at least a portion of the on-demand exercise class;

a control station to synchronize activity information associated with users' physical exercise during at least the portion of the on-demand exercise class;

a storage device maintaining previously recorded exercise content for the on-demand exercise class and the activity information associated with users' exercise;

the on-demand exercise class includes at least one synchronizing signal, wherein the at least one synchronizing signal indicates points for collecting activity information associated with a user's exercise during at least a portion of the on-demand exercise class, and wherein the at least one synchronizing signal enables synchronization of the collected activity information with the activity information maintained in the storage device;

the control station providing the at least one synchronizing signal together with replay of the on-demand exercise class begins;

the control station collecting live activity information during the replay of the on-demand exercise class from the points indicated by the at least one synchronizing signal;

the control station synchronizing a portion of the maintained activity information for the on-demand exercise class with a portion of the live activity information according to the at least one synchronizing signal; and

the storage device maintaining the live activity information synchronized with the maintained activity information for the on-demand class.

29. A networked system for facilitating multiple users to participate in a previously-recorded on-demand exercise class, the networked system comprising:

multiple sensors that include a sensor associated with each user of the multiple users participating in the on-demand exercise class, wherein the sensors measure physical activity for the associated users when the associated users are participating in the on-demand exercise class; and

a control station that synchronizes users' activity information associated with the users' physical activity for the previously recorded on-demand exercise class, by:

transmitting at least one synchronizing signal upon commencement of a replay of the on-demand exercise class to the multiple sensors associated with live users, the at least one synchronizing signal indicating points for collecting activity information during the replay of the on-demand exercise class, and wherein the at least one synchronizing signal enables synchronization of the activity information with stored activity information;

collecting the activity information during the replay of the on-demand exercise class;

accessing stored activity information captured during previous replays of the on-demand exercise class; and

synchronizing the stored activity information for the previously recorded on-demand exercise class with the collected activity information according to the at least one synchronizing signal in order to facilitate participation of the live users of the replay of the on-demand exercise class with previous users of the previous replays of the on-demand exercise class.

30. The networked system of claim 29 , further comprising:

a storage device accessible to the control station that maintains the captured activity information with the stored activity information, wherein the stored activity information were captured during previous replays of the on-demand exercise class.
