Abstract

Disclosed are an apparatus and method of managing network elements operating on a network. One example method may include transmitting a request to receive at least one activity parameter of a network element operating on the network and monitoring the at least one activity parameter of the network element. The method may include determining whether a usage value of the at least one activity parameter exceeds a predetermined threshold usage value and transmitting a corrective function message to the network element responsive to determining that the usage value of the at least one activity parameter exceeds the predetermined threshold value. The method may further include performing a corrective function to reduce the usage value of the at least one activity parameter.

Claims (36)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving an SNMP message by a simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent local to a network element operating on a network, wherein the SNMP message contains a corrective command from an SNMP server responsive to the SNMP agent determining that a usage value of an activity parameter of the network element exceeds a predetermined threshold value, wherein the corrective command is added to an SNMP payload of the SNMP message and is piggybacked on a protocol data unit; and

responsive to the corrective command, performing by the SNMP agent a corrective function specified by the corrective command on the network element to reduce the usage value of the activity parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring the activity parameter via an SNMP monitoring function initiated by the SNMP server.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the monitoring further comprises:

monitoring the activity parameter via an SNMP agent application operating on the network element.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activity parameter comprises at least one of:

a random access memory (RAM) usage, a central processor utilization (CPU) usage, a number of applications being operated, or an amount of network traffic being processed.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the corrective command increments a virtual memory swap file size.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

transmitting results of the corrective command to an SNMP server.

7. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor that, when executing instructions stored in an associated memory, is configured to:

determine by a simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent, local to a network element operating on a network, that a usage value of an activity parameter of the network element exceeds a predetermined threshold usage value;

in response to the determination, receive an SNMP message containing a corrective command from an SNMP server, wherein the corrective command is added to an SNMP payload of the SNMP message and is piggybacked on a protocol data unit; and

responsive to the corrective command being received, perform by the SNMP agent a corrective function specified by the corrective command on the network element to reduce the usage value of the at least one activity parameter.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor is configured to:

monitor the activity parameter via an SNMP monitoring function initiated by the SNMP server.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the activity parameter comprises at least one of:

a random access memory (RAM) usage, a central processor utilization (CPU) usage, a number of applications being operated, or an amount of network traffic being processed.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein, when the processor is configured to monitor the activity parameter, the processor is further configured to:

monitor the activity parameter via an SNMP agent application operating on the network element.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the corrective command increments a virtual memory swap file size.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

transmit results of the corrective command to an SNMP server.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium configured to store instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform:

receiving an SNMP message by a simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent local to a network element operating on a network, wherein the SNMP message contains a corrective command from an SNMP server responsive to the SNMP agent determining that a usage value of an activity parameter of the network element exceeds a predetermined threshold value, wherein the corrective command is added to an SNMP payload of the SNMP message and is piggybacked on a protocol data unit; and

responsive to the corrective command, performing by the SNMP agent a corrective function specified by the corrective command on the network element to reduce the usage value of the activity parameter.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to perform:

monitoring the activity parameter via an SNMP monitoring function initiated by the SNMP server.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the monitoring further comprises:

monitoring the activity parameter via an SNMP agent application operating on the network element.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the activity parameter comprises at least one of:

a random access memory (RAM) usage, a central processor utilization (CPU) usage, a number of applications being operated, or an amount of network traffic being processed.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the corrective command increments a virtual memory swap file size.
