Abstract

A method to enable a vehicle's embedded USB Host system to connect to multiple mobile devices through a USB Hub, regardless of whether the mobile devices are configured to act as USB Hosts or USB Devices, without USB On the Go (OTG) controllers or additional vehicle wiring or inhibiting the functionality of any consumer devices connected to the same USB Hub. Preferably, the method is configured to provide that no additional cabling or hardware changes to accommodate this capability. The method can be employed between a vehicle's embedded USB Host, USB Hub and at least one consumer accessible USB port. When the consumer device is acting as a USB Host, signals between the consumer device and the vehicle's embedded USB Host are processed through a USB bridge, thereby rendering the consumer device compatible with the vehicle's embedded USB Host.

Claims (34)

1. A method, comprising:

providing a first USB port for communication with a USB host;

providing a second USB port for communicating with a consumer USB device;

providing a signal detection circuit for receiving USB signals from the consumer USB device via the second USB port;

routing the USB signals emanating from the consumer USB device to the first USB port via a routing logic circuit connected directly to a USB bridge and a USB hub connected to the USB bridge in accordance with a determination by the signal detection circuit that the consumer device is operating in a USB host mode, wherein the USB bridge includes a bridge controller, buffers, and a plurality of ports; and

routing the USB signals emanating from the consumer USB device to the first USB port via the routing logic connected directly to the USB hub and thereby bypassing the USB bridge in accordance with a determination by the signal detection circuit that the consumer device is operating in a USB device mode, wherein the USB hub and USB bridge have different components and functionality.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the USB host is embedded in an infotainment system.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the bypassing the USB bridge is performed by a USB routing switch.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the USB routing switch includes the signal detection circuit.

5. A USB communication management method for interconnecting sources of USB signals, the method comprising:

receiving first USB host signals from a first USB host;

receiving second USB signals from a second USB signal source;

determining, via a signal detection circuit, whether the second USB signals emanate from a second USB host;

routing the second USB signals emanating from the second USB host via a routing logic circuit connected directly to a USB bridge and a USB hub connected to the USB bridge to the first USB host, wherein the USB bridge includes a bridge controller, buffers, and a plurality of ports; and

routing the second USB signals not determined to emanate from a USB host via the routing logic connected directly to the USB hub to the first USB host and thereby bypassing the USB bridge, wherein the USB hub and USB bridge have different components and functionality.

6. The USB communication management method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

determining whether the second USB signals emanate from a USB device; and

routing the second USB signals determined to emanate from the USB device via a USB hub to the first USB host.

7. The USB communication management method according to claim 5 , wherein the first USB host is embedded in an infotainment system.

8. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the routing of the second USB signals is performed by a USB routing switch.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the USB routing switch includes the signal detection circuit.

10. A USB communication management method for interconnecting sources of USB signals, the method comprising:

receiving a first USB host signal from a first USB host;

receiving a second USB signal from a second USB signal source;

determining whether the second USB signal emanates from a second USB host;

establishing a first communication path via a routing logic circuit connected directly to a USB bridge and a USB hub connected to the USB bridge to the first USB host and the second USB signal source in accordance with the second signal emanating from the second USB host, wherein the USB bridge includes a bridge controller, buffers, and a plurality of ports; and

establishing a second communication path via the routing logic connected directly to the USB hub to the first USB host to the first USB host and the second USB signal source and thereby bypassing the USB bridge in accordance with the second USB signal not to emanating from the second USB host, wherein the USB hub and USB bridge have different components and functionality.

11. The USB communication management method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

determining whether the second USB signal emanates from a USB device; and

establishing the second communication path via a USB hub between the first USB host and the second USB signal source which bypasses the USB bridge in accordance with the second USB signal emanating from the USB device.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the second communication path does not include the USB bridge.

13. The USB communication management method according to claim 12 , wherein the first USB host is embedded in an infotainment system.

14. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the establishment of the second communication path is performed by a USB routing switch.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the USB routing switch determines whether the second USB signal emanates from a USB device.
