Abstract

Systems and methods for a computer-based process that determines when a viewer is likely to skip over supplemental content and adjusts supplemental content presentation to compensate. Systems of embodiments of the disclosure may utilize various inputs to determine the likelihood of skipping supplemental content, including cursor position at or near specified icons or other UI elements, as well as user actions such as gaze direction, various motions or actions, controller manipulations, and the like. Once a likelihood of skipping supplemental content is determined, various actions may be taken in response, including without limitation selection of supplemental content that conveys its intended message prior to skipping, supplemental content that can be played at increased speed, and designation of supplemental content slots as skippable or non-skippable.

Claims (54)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting for display a content item;

identifying a time when display of the content item is to be interrupted by display of at least one supplemental content item;

determining, by control circuitry and based on input received before the identified time, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content item based at least in part on one or more of:

a positioning of a cursor, before the identified time, at a position at which an interface element indicating an option to skip is to be displayed at the identified time; or

an eye gaze directed at the position before the identified time;

selecting a particular supplemental content item from among a plurality of supplemental content items based on the determined likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content; and

transmitting for display the selected, particular supplemental content item at the identified time.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selecting further comprises:

if the determined likelihood exceeds a threshold, selecting a first particular supplemental content item from the plurality of supplemental content items; and

if the determined likelihood falls below the threshold, selecting a second particular supplemental content item from the plurality of supplemental content items.

3. The method of claim 1 :

wherein the identifying further comprises transmitting for display an interface element indicating an upcoming option to skip the supplemental content after the identified time; and

wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from one or more of a positioning of a cursor over the displayed interface element before the identified time, an eye gaze directed at the displayed interface element before the identified time, a hand positioned over a remote controller before the identified time, or a pressure applied to a button of the remote controller before the identified time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the likelihood is determined according to one or more of a cursor placement, a cursor movement, a movement of a controller, a movement of a person, a pressure upon a portion of the controller, or an eye gaze of the person.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selecting further comprises one or more of selecting the supplemental content item for display at an increased speed, or selecting a portion of one of the supplemental content items for display.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving profile information from a memory, wherein the determining further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from the retrieved profile information.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the profile information comprises one or more of a skip history, previously viewed supplemental content, metadata of previously viewed supplemental content, metadata of the supplemental content, a brand identification, or a time of day.

8. A method comprising:

transmitting for display a content item;

identifying a time when display of the content item is to be interrupted by display of at least one supplemental content item;

determining, by control circuitry and based on input received before the identified time, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content item;

responsive to the determining of the likelihood, designating a supplemental content slot as a non-skippable supplemental content slot or as a skippable supplemental content slot

selecting a particular supplemental content item from among a plurality of supplemental content items based on the determined likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content; and

transmitting for display the selected, particular supplemental content item at the identified time.

9. A system comprising:

a storage device; and

control circuitry configured to:

transmit for display a content item;

identify a time when display of the content item is to be interrupted by display of at least one supplemental content item;

determine, by the control circuitry and based on input received before the identified time, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content item based at least in part on one or more of:

a positioning of a cursor, before the identified time, at a position at which an interface element indicating an option to skip is to be displayed at the identified time; or

an eye gaze directed at the position before the identified time;

select a particular supplemental content item from among a plurality of supplemental content items based on the determined likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content; and

transmit for display the selected, particular supplemental content item at the identified time.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the selecting further comprises:

if the determined likelihood exceeds a threshold, selecting a first particular supplemental content item from the plurality of supplemental content items; and

if the determined likelihood falls below the threshold, selecting a second particular supplemental content item from the plurality of supplemental content items.

11. The system of claim 9 :

wherein the identifying further comprises transmitting for display an interface element indicating an upcoming option to skip the supplemental content after the identified time; and

wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from one or more of a positioning of a cursor over the displayed interface element before the identified time, an eye gaze directed at the displayed interface element before the identified time, a hand positioned over a remote controller before the identified time, or a pressure applied to a button of the remote controller before the identified time.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the likelihood is determined according to one or more of a cursor placement, a cursor movement, a movement of a controller, a movement of a person, a pressure upon a portion of the controller, or an eye gaze of the person.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the selecting further comprises one or more of selecting the supplemental content item for display at an increased speed, or selecting a portion of one of the supplemental content items for display.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to retrieve profile information from a memory, wherein the determining further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from the retrieved profile information, and wherein the profile information comprises one or more of a skip history, previously viewed supplemental content, metadata of previously viewed supplemental content, metadata of the supplemental content, a brand identification, or a time of day.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to, responsive to a determining of the likelihood, designate a supplemental content slot as a non-skippable supplemental content slot.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to, responsive to a determining of the likelihood, designate a supplemental content slot as a skippable supplemental content slot.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that when executed by control circuitry causes the control circuitry to:

transmit for display a content item;

identify a time when display of the content item is to be interrupted by display of at least one supplemental content item;

determine, by the control circuitry and based on input received before the identified time, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content item based at least in part on one or more of:

a positioning of a cursor, before the identified time, at a position at which an interface element indicating an option to skip is to be displayed at the identified time; or

an eye gaze directed at the position before the identified time;

select a particular supplemental content item from among a plurality of supplemental content items based on the determined likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the at least one supplemental content; and

transmit for display the selected, particular supplemental content item at the identified time.
