Abstract

Systems and methods for a computer-based process that determines when a viewer is likely to skip over supplemental content and adjusts supplemental content presentation to compensate. Systems of embodiments of the disclosure may utilize various inputs to determine the likelihood of skipping supplemental content, including cursor position at or near specified icons or other UI elements, as well as user actions such as gaze direction, various motions or actions, controller manipulations, and the like. Once a likelihood of skipping supplemental content is determined, various actions may be taken in response, including without limitation selection of supplemental content that conveys its intended message prior to skipping, supplemental content that can be played at increased speed, and designation of supplemental content slots as skippable or non-skippable.

Claims (52)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting for display a content item;

accessing a stored transmission schedule that defines a transmission of insertion into the content item of:

a skippable supplemental content item at a first time slot, and

a non-skippable supplemental content item at a second time slot;

determining, by control circuitry, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot;

responsive to the determining:

adjusting the stored transmission schedule to schedule the transmission of:

the non-skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the first time slot; and

the skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the second time slot; and

transmitting for display the non-skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot according to the stored transmission schedule.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from one or more of a positioning of a cursor over a displayed interface element before the first time slot, an eye gaze directed at the displayed interface element before the first time slot, a hand positioned over a remote controller before the first time slot, or a pressure applied to a button of the remote controller before the first time slot.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the likelihood is performed based at least in part on one or more of a cursor placement, a cursor movement, a movement of a controller, a movement of a person, a pressure upon a portion of the controller, or an eye gaze of the person.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving profile information from a memory, wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from the retrieved profile information.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the profile information comprises one or more of a skip history, previously viewed supplemental content items, metadata of previously viewed supplemental content items, metadata of the skippable and/or non-skippable supplemental content items, a brand identification, or a time of day.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting the stored transmission schedule is performed responsive to the determined likelihood exceeding a threshold.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining is performed during a supplemental content insertion countdown.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, responsive to the determining, selecting the skippable supplemental content item, and transmitting for display the skippable supplemental content item during the second time slot.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the selecting the skippable supplemental content item further comprises selecting the skippable supplemental content item for display at an increased speed, or selecting a portion of a supplemental content item for display.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting the stored transmission schedule is performed responsive to a determination that the receiving the command to skip play of the skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot is likely.

11. A system comprising:

a storage device; and

control circuitry configured to:

transmit for display a content item;

access a stored transmission schedule that defines a transmission of insertion into the content item of:

a skippable supplemental content item at a first time slot, and

a non-skippable supplemental content item at a second time slot;

determine, by control circuitry, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot;

responsive to the determining:

adjust the stored transmission schedule to schedule the transmission of:

the non-skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the first time slot; and

the skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the second time slot; and

transmit for display the non-skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot according to the stored transmission schedule.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from one or more of a positioning of a cursor over a displayed interface element before the first time slot, an eye gaze directed at the displayed interface element before the first time slot, a hand positioned over a remote controller before the first time slot, or a pressure applied to a button of the remote controller before the first time slot.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the determining the likelihood is performed based at least in part on one or more of a cursor placement, a cursor movement, a movement of a controller, a movement of a person, a pressure upon a portion of the controller, or an eye gaze of the person.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to retrieve profile information from a memory, wherein the determining the likelihood further comprises determining the likelihood at least in part from the retrieved profile information.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the profile information comprises one or more of a skip history, previously viewed supplemental content items, metadata of previously viewed supplemental content items, metadata of the skippable and/or non-skippable supplemental content items, a brand identification, or a time of day.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the adjusting the stored transmission schedule is performed responsive to the determined likelihood exceeding a threshold.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the determining is performed during a supplemental content insertion countdown.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to, responsive to the determining, select the skippable supplemental content item, and transmitting for display the skippable supplemental content item during the second time slot, and wherein the selecting the skippable supplemental content item further comprises selecting the skippable supplemental content item for display at an increased speed, or selecting a portion of a supplemental content item for display.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the adjusting the stored transmission schedule is performed responsive to a determination that the receiving the command to skip play of the skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot is likely.

20. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that when executed by control circuitry causes the control circuitry to:

transmit for display a content item;

access a stored transmission schedule that defines a transmission of insertion into the content item of:

a skippable supplemental content item at a first time slot, and

a non-skippable supplemental content item at a second slot;

determine, by control circuitry, a likelihood of receiving a command to skip play of the skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot;

responsive to the determining:

adjust the stored transmission schedule to schedule the transmission of:

the non-skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the first time slot; and

the skippable supplemental content item as an interruption of the content item at the second time slot; and

transmit for display the non-skippable supplemental content item during the first time slot according to the stored transmission schedule.
