Abstract

Provided herein is an electro-optic display having a layer of electrophoretic material, a first conductive layer, and a piezoelectric material positioned between the layer of electrophoretic material and the first conductive layer, the piezoelectric material overlaps with a portion of the layer of electrophoretic material, and a portion of the first conductive layer overlaps with the rest of the electrophoretic material.

Claims (31)

1. An electro-optic display comprising:

a layer of electrophoretic material;

a first conductive layer;

a layer of piezoelectric material positioned between the layer of electrophoretic material and the first conductive layer; and

an adhesive layer positioned between the layer of piezoelectric material and the layer of electrophoretic material, wherein the adhesive layer has a resistivity between 10 8 Ohm*cm and 10 12 Ohm*cm.

2. The electro-optic display of claim 1 further comprising a second conductive layer positioned adjacent to the layer of electrophoretic material and positioned on a side of the layer of electrophoretic material opposite to the layer of piezoelectric material and the first conductive layer.

3. The electro-optic display of claim 1 further comprising a high-resistive layer positioned between the first conductive layer and the layer of piezoelectric material.

4. The electro-optic display of claim 3 wherein the high-resistive layer has a resistivity of substantially 10 2 to 10 12 Ohm*cm.

5. The electro-optic display of claim 2 further comprising a barrier layer positioned between the second conductive layer and the layer of electrophoretic material.

6. The electro-optic display of claim 5 wherein the barrier layer comprises silicon oxide.

7. The electro-optic display of claim 1 wherein the first conductive layer overlaps with substantially all of the layer of piezoelectric material and the layer of electrophoretic material.

8. The electro-optic display of claim 1 wherein the first conductive layer comprises a conductive adhesive material.

9. The electro-optic display of claim 1 wherein the first conductive layer comprises copper tape.

10. The electro-optic display of claim 2 wherein the electrophoretic material is fabricated onto the second conductive layer.

11. The electro-optic display of claim 1 wherein the piezoelectric material is one of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), quartz (SiO2), berlinite (AIPO4), gallium orthophosphate (GaPO—O, tourmaline, barium titanate (BaTiOs), lead zirconate titanate (PZT), zinc oxide (ZnO), aluminum nitride (AlN), lithium tantalite, lanthanum gallium silicate, and potassium sodium tartrate.

12. The electro-optic display of claim 2 , wherein the thickness of the electro-optic display is less than 50 micrometers.

13. The electro-optic display of claim 1 , wherein the electro-optic display is affixed to a currency bill.

14. A method for producing a display comprising:

depositing a piezoelectric film onto a first conductive layer;

fabricating a layer of electrophoretic display material onto a second conductive layer; and

positioning an adhesive layer between the piezoelectric film and the layer of electrophoretic display material,

wherein the adhesive layer has a resistivity between 10 8 Ohm*cm and 10 12 Ohm*cm.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein fabricating further comprises patterning a plurality of micro-cell structures onto the first conductive layer.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising embossing electrophoretic fluid with electrophoretic particles into the plurality of micro-cell structures.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising affixing the display to a currency bill.

18. The method of claim 14 further comprising printing one or more images onto at least one of the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer.

19. A method of integrating electrophoretic displays, comprising:

producing a first display according to the method of claim 14 ;

producing a second display according to the method of claim 14 ; and

integrating the first and second displays using a transparent adhesive material.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein integrating comprises adhering the first conductive layer of the first display to the first conductive layer of the second display.
