Abstract

The present invention relates to a long-lasting medical product for protecting or treating a lesion in the gastrointestinal tract. The medical product includes a protective covering, wherein the medical product upon application at and about the site of the lesion adheres to the gastrointestinal tissue and is capable of remaining at and about the site of the lesion for a time sufficient to allow the lesion to heal or be treated.

Claims (37)

1. A method for protecting and treating a lesion with active bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, comprising:

directly applying a hemostatic agent at and about a site of the lesion in the gastrointestinal tract in the amount and for a time sufficient to stop the active bleeding; and

once the active bleeding has stopped or slowed, directly applying a protective covering comprising an adhesive agent on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic agent, wherein the protective covering upon application on top of and about at least a portion of the hemostatic agent is in direct contact with both the hemostatic agent and tissue surrounding the lesion, provides a sustained protective barrier, and is capable of remaining at and about the site of the lesion for a minimum of 30 minutes.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the hemostatic agent comprises spraying, ejecting or spreading the hemostatic agent at and about the site of the lesion with the active bleeding.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of applying the protective covering comprises spraying, ejecting or spreading the protective covering on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic agent at and about the lesion site in the gastrointestinal tract.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

using a first delivery device comprising a syringe loaded with the hemostatic agent to deliver the hemostatic agent first to flow to and about the site of the actively bleeding lesion; and

using a second delivery device comprising a syringe loaded with the adhesive agent to deliver the adhesive agent,

wherein the second delivery device is actuated after the first delivery device has delivered the hemostatic agent and the active bleeding has been stopped or slowed by the hemostatic agent, such that the hemostatic agent is initially in direct contact with the actively bleeding lesion, and the adhesive agent is subsequently in direct contact with both the hemostatic agent and surrounding tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: using a multi-lumen catheter, where the hemostatic agent and the adhesive agent are delivered through the multi-lumen catheter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the protective covering comprises a solid material in a form of a bandage, a patch, or a dressing.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive agent is in a liquid form that solidifies upon the delivery on top of and about at least a portion of the hemostatic agent at and about the lesion site.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a crosslinking initiator selected from the group consisting of chemical, thermal, light, curing agent and a catalyst.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

instructing a medical practitioner to apply the hemostatic agent to and about the site of the lesion with the active bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract first;

instructing the medical practitioner to determine whether the active bleeding has stopped; and

instructing the medical practitioner to apply the protective covering on top of and about at least a portion of the hemostatic agent at and about the lesion site in the gastrointestinal tract.

10. A method for protecting and treating a lesion with active bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, comprising:

applying a hemostatic composition comprising a hemostatic powder at and about a site of the lesion in the gastrointestinal tract in the amount and for a time sufficient to stop the active bleeding;

waiting for the active bleeding to slow or stop; and

subsequently applying an adhesive powder on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic composition.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of applying the hemostatic composition comprises spraying the hemostatic composition at and about the site of the lesion with the active bleeding.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of applying the adhesive powder comprises spraying, ejecting or spreading the adhesive powder on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic composition at and about the lesion site in the gastrointestinal tract.

13. A method for protecting and treating a lesion with active bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, comprising:

applying a hemostatic agent at and about a site of the lesion in the gastrointestinal tract in the amount and for a time sufficient to stop the active bleeding;

waiting for the active bleeding to slow or stop; and

subsequently applying a protective covering comprising an adhesive agent on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic agent.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of applying the hemostatic agent comprises spraying, ejecting or spreading the hemostatic agent at and about the site of the lesion with the active bleeding.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of applying the protective covering comprises spraying, ejecting or spreading the protective covering on top of and about at least a portion of the previously applied hemostatic agent at and about the lesion site in the gastrointestinal tract.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

using a first delivery device comprising a syringe loaded with the hemostatic agent to deliver the hemostatic agent first to flow to and about the site of the actively bleeding lesion; and

using a second delivery device comprising a syringe loaded with the adhesive agent to deliver the adhesive agent,

wherein the second delivery device is actuated after the first delivery device has delivered the hemostatic agent and the active bleeding has been stopped or slowed by the hemostatic agent, such that the hemostatic agent is initially in direct contact with the actively bleeding lesion, and the adhesive agent is subsequently in direct contact with both the hemostatic agent and surrounding tissue.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: using a multi-lumen catheter, where the hemostatic agent and the adhesive agent are delivered through the multi-lumen catheter.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the protective covering comprises a solid material in a form of a bandage, a patch, or a dressing.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adhesive agent is in a liquid form that solidifies upon the delivery on top of and about at least a portion of the hemostatic agent at and about the lesion site.

20. The method of claim 13 , further comprising applying a crosslinking initiator selected from the group consisting of chemical, thermal, light, curing agent and a catalyst.
