Abstract

A method of communicating an emergency alert includes receiving, by a central content controller (CCC), audiovisual (AV) content from a plurality of sources, determining existence of one or more emergency alerts, encoding the content to form a first stream type and transmitting the first stream type to regional controllers (RCs) associated with a respective market area (MA) if no alerts exist, determining, if an alert exist, a market area for the alert, encode the content and the alert to form a second stream type, transmit the second stream type to a RC associated with a MA for which the alert is applicable and encode the content to form the first stream and transmit the first stream type to RCs associated with a MA without an alert, and broadcast, as AV signals, the received stream types by the RC.

Claims (65)

1. A method of communicating an emergency alert, the method comprising:

receiving, by a central content controller (CCC), audiovisual (AV) content from a plurality of sources;

determining, by the CCC, existence of one or more emergency alerts;

if no alerts exist,

encoding, by the CCC, the content to form a first stream type;

transmitting, by the CCC, the first stream type to regional controllers (RCs) associated with a respective market area (MA),

else,

determining, by the CCC, a MA for the one or more emergency alerts;

for each MA having an active alert:

encoding, by the CCC, the content and the alert to form a second stream type;

transmitting, by the CCC, the second stream type to a RC associated with a MA for which the alert is applicable,

for each MA without an applicable alert:

encoding, by the CCC, the content to form the first stream type;

transmitting, by the CCC, the first stream type to RCs associated with a respective MA, and

broadcasting, via an over the air (OTA) interface, the received stream types as AV signals by each RC to the associated MA.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: generating an alert in a MA at which the alert is applicable.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: communicating the alert from the MA to the CCC.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: communicating the alert over a public or a private network.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: broadcasting via an over the air (OTA) interface.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising: receiving the broadcast signals via an antenna associated with a viewer premises.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: processing the received signals by a set-top-box (STB) associated with a viewer premises.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising: presenting the alert to a viewer associated with the viewer premises.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

packetizing and encrypting the encoded content.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

packaging the encoded content.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein if an alert becomes inactive, switching transmission from encoded content and alert to encoded content.

12. A system for communicating an emergency alert, the system comprising:

a central content controller (CCC) configured to:

receive audiovisual (AV) content from a plurality of sources;

determine existence of one or more emergency alerts;

if no alerts exist,

encode the content to form a first stream type; and

transmit the first stream type,

else,

determine a market area (MA) for the one or more emergency alerts;

for a market area having an active alert:

encode the content and the alert to form a second stream type; and

transmit the second stream type,

for a MA without an applicable alert:

encode the content to form the first stream type; and

transmit the first stream type, and

a plurality of regional controllers (RC) associated with respective MAs and configured to:

receive the stream types transmitted by the CCC; and

broadcast the received stream types as AV signals to associated MA.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising: an alert generator for transmitting alerts to the CCC.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the alert generator is communicatively coupled to the CCC via a private or a public network.

15. The system of claim 12 , further comprising: a broadcast antenna associated with a RC for broadcasting on an over the air (OTA) interface.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising: an antenna associated with a viewer premises for receiving the content AV signals broadcast from the RC.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising: a set-top-box (STB) associated with the antenna of the viewer premises for processing the received AV signals.

18. A non-transitory computer readable medium contain program instructions for communicating an emergency alert, wherein execution of the program instructions by one or more processors of one or more computer systems causes the one or more processors to carry out the steps of:

receiving, by a central content controller (CCC), audiovisual (AV) content from a plurality of sources;

determining, by the CCC, existence of one or more emergency alerts;

if no alerts exist,

encoding, by the CCC, the content to form a first stream type;

transmitting, by the CCC, the first stream type to regional controllers (RCs) associated with respective market areas (MAs),

else,

determining, by the CCC, a MA for the one or more emergency alerts;

for a MA having an active alert:

encoding, by the CCC, the content and alert to form a second stream type;

transmitting, by the CCC, the second stream type to a RC associated with a MA for which the alert is applicable,

for a MA without an applicable alert:

encoding, by the CCC, the content to form the first stream type; and

transmitting, by the CCC, the first stream type to a RC associated with the MA,

broadcasting, by the receiving RCs, the first and second stream types as AV signals to associated MAs.
