Abstract

A mobile device allows transmission of additional outgoing application data requests in response to occurrence of receipt of data transfer from a remote entity, user input in response to a prompt displayed to the user, and a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device. Additional outgoing application data requests are foreground application requests.

Claims (32)

1. A mobile device which improves network resource utilization in a wireless network, the mobile device, comprising:

a memory;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

receive instructions to enter a power save mode;

while the mobile device is in the power save mode:

intercept outgoing application data requests and prevent transmission of the outgoing application data requests from the mobile device over the wireless network, wherein the outgoing application data requests are background application requests for more than one application;

allow transmission of additional outgoing application data requests, wherein the additional outgoing application data requests are foreground application requests, in response to:

receiving data from an intermediary server that provides connectivity between an application server for the application and the mobile device;

receiving input in response to a prompt displayed to the user; and

detecting a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device;

receive instructions to exit the power save mode; and

while the mobile device is not in the power save mode:

intercept and prevent transmission of outgoing application data requests from the mobile device over the wireless network based on a received selection for each application.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the data received from the intermediary server is a notification of new data at the application server.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to enter the power save mode are based on a battery level of the mobile device.

4. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data in response to the allowed additional outgoing application data requests.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted while the transmission of the additional application data requests is not allowed.

6. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted after the transmission of the additional application data requests is allowed.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the outgoing application data requests and the additional application data requests are for a same application.

8. A method which improves network resource utilization in a wireless network, the method comprising:

at a mobile device:

receiving instructions to enter a power save mode;

while the mobile device is in the power save mode:

intercepting outgoing application data requests and preventing transmission of the outgoing application data requests from the mobile device over the wireless network, wherein the outgoing application data requests are background application requests for more than one application; and

allowing transmission of additional outgoing application data requests, wherein the additional outgoing application data requests are foreground application requests, in response to:

receiving data from an intermediary server that provides connectivity between an application server for the application and the mobile device;

receiving input in response to a prompt displayed to the user; and

detecting a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device;

receiving instructions to exit the power save mode; and

while the mobile device is not in the power save mode:

intercepting and prevent transmission of outgoing application data requests from the mobile device over the wireless network based on a received selection for each application.
