Abstract

Systems and related methods for supplying power to an implantable blood pump are provided. A system includes a base module and a plurality of energy storage devices. A first energy storage device is operatively coupled to the base module. A second energy storage device is operatively coupled to the first modular energy storage device. The energy storage devices are mechanically coupled in series, electrically coupled in parallel, and configured to provide redundant sources of power to drive an implantable blood pump.

Claims (14)

1. A mechanical circulatory support system comprising:

an implantable blood pump; and

a system controller configured to control operation of the implantable blood pump, wherein the system controller comprises a rechargeable power storage device, an input connector, and an output connector; wherein the output connector is operatively configured to supply electrical power to drive the implantable blood pump, and wherein the rechargeable power storage device and the input connector are connected so that when a power source is connected to the input connector, the rechargeable power storage device and the power source are connected in parallel to accommodate simultaneous supply of power by the power source to the implantable blood pump via the output connector and to the rechargeable power storage device for recharging of the rechargeable power storage device.

2. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , further comprising the power source.

3. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 2 , wherein the power source is configured to draw power from an AC power outlet.

4. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the system controller comprises one or more indicators configured to indicate a level of power available to drive the implantable blood pump and/or a fault associated with the implantable blood pump.

5. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 4 , wherein the system controller is configured to wirelessly transmit one or more notifications regarding the level of power available to drive the implantable blood pump and/or the fault to an external device.

6. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , further comprising a percutaneous driveline cable connected to the implantable blood pump.

7. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the system controller comprises electronically controlled switches that are operable to control distribution of electrical power received via the input connector to simultaneously supply power to power the implantable blood pump and recharge the rechargeable power storage device.

8. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the implantable blood pump comprises a ventricular assist device (VAD) operable to pump blood from a ventricle of a patient to a blood vessel of the patient.

9. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 8 , wherein the VAD comprises an impeller that is magnetically levitated and rotated to pump blood from the ventricle of the patient to the blood vessel of the patient.

10. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 9 , wherein implantable blood pump comprises electronics for controlling radial levitation and rotation of the impeller.

11. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the system controller comprises components controllable to prevent flow of electrical power to the rechargeable power storage device from the power source.

12. The mechanical circulatory support system of claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable power storage device is disposed within the system controller.
