Abstract

A method for storage of an item of information (210) is disclosed. The method comprises encoding bytes (720) in the item of information (210), and representing using a schema the encoded bytes by a DNA nucleotide to produce a DNA sequence (230). The DNA sequence (230) is broken into a plurality of overlapping DNA segments (240) and indexing information (250) added to the plurality of DNA segments. Finally, the plurality of DNA segments (240) is synthesized (790) and stored (795).

Claims (27)

1 . A method of storing information using nucleotides comprising:

converting an item of information comprising bytes into at least one DNA segment data;

synthesizing the at least one DNA segment data into at least one DNA segment, sequencing the at least one synthesized DNA segment; and

decoding the at least one sequenced DNA segment into the bytes of the item of information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the decoding further comprises decoding the at least one sequenced DNA segment into bit sequences, assembling the bit sequences into the bytes, and converting the bytes into a format of the item of information.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one DNA segment data comprises indexing information.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the indexing information is configured to identify a source of the item of information.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the indexing information is configured to identify the location of the at least one DNA segment data in the source of the item of information.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one DNA segment data comprises sequencing adapters.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein bytes are stored in a digital file.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the digital file is stored on a hard disk.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one DNA segment data is at least 100 bases in length.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the item of information comprises at least 15,646 bytes.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the item of information comprises at least one of text, images, music, and video.

12 . A method of retrieving an item of information from at least one synthesized DNA segment storing bytes of the item of information comprising:

sequencing the at least one synthesized DNA segment to generate DNA segment data; and

converting the DNA segment data into the bytes of the item of information.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the converting comprises converting the DNA segment data into encoded ones of the bytes, and converting the encoded ones of the bytes into the item of information.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least one synthesized DNA segment comprises indexing information.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the indexing information is configured to identify a source of the item of information.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the indexing information is configured to identify the location of the at least one synthesized DNA segment in the source of the item of information.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one DNA segment comprises sequencing adapters.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the bytes are stored in a digital file.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the digital file is stored on a hard disk.

20 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least one DNA segment is at least 100 bases in length.

21 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the item of information comprises at least 15,646 bytes.

22 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the item of information comprises at least one of text, images, music, and video.
