Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatuses are described for accelerating projectiles at high velocity. A barrel may include one or more heaters configured to heat a bore of the barrel prior to launch of a projectile. The barrel bore may be formed in a tungsten sleeve and may be heated to high temperatures. Heat from the barrel bore may be transferred to expanding propellant behind a projectile as it travels through the barrel bore.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a barrel comprising a bore and one or more controllable heaters configured to heat a surface of the bore;

a first chamber configured to position a projectile relative to the barrel, wherein the first chamber is connected to a first purge gas channel and to a second purge gas channel;

a first valve openable to allow flow of purge gas into the first chamber via the first purge gas channel and closeable to prevent flow of purge gas into the first chamber via the first purge gas channel;

a second valve openable to allow flow of purge gas out of the first chamber via the second purge gas channel and closeable to prevent flow of purge gas out of the first chamber via the second purge gas channel; and

a second chamber configured to direct a pressurized light gas behind the projectile for movement from the first chamber and acceleration through the bore.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an interface between the first chamber and the second chamber is configured to hold a shear plate to prevent flow of gas from the second chamber to the first chamber.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a projectile positioned in the first chamber; and

a shear plate, separating the second chamber from the first chamber, configured to shear if pressure in the second chamber reaches a predefined value.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the shear plate comprises a shearing diaphragm formed from copper or nylon.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a source of inert purge gas connected to the first valve, wherein the inert purge gas comprises one or more of helium, neon, or argon.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a gas supply, coupled to the second chamber via a third valve, containing a supply of the light gas, and wherein the light gas comprises one or more of hydrogen or helium.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the barrel comprises a tungsten sleeve in which the bore is formed.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more controllable heaters comprise a plurality of heaters positioned along a length of the barrel and configured to maintain the surface of the bore at a temperature above 700° K.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first shutter, positioned closer to an entrance of the barrel than an exit of the barrel, having an open configuration exposing the bore and a closed configuration preventing passage of gas into or out of the bore; and

a second shutter, positioned closer to the exit of the barrel than the entrance of the barrel, having an open configuration exposing the bore and a closed configuration preventing passage of gas into or out of the bore.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more controllable heaters comprises a plurality of heaters configured to create a continuously increasing temperature gradient in which portions of the surface of the bore nearer an exit of the barrel than an entrance of the barrel are heated to temperatures that are higher than temperatures to which portions of the surface of the bore, nearer the entrance of the barrel than the exit of the barrel, are heated.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third chamber comprising an igniter, a fuel/air inlet port, and an exhaust port; and

a piston, separating the third chamber and the second chamber, movable though the second chamber toward the first chamber.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a railgun armature; and

a piston configured for movement, with the railgun armature, though the second chamber toward the first chamber.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first electrode extending into the second chamber, wherein the first electrode is electrically isolated from a wall of the second chamber; and

a second electrode extending into the second chamber, wherein the second electrode is electrically isolated from the wall of the second chamber.

14. A method comprising heating, using one or more controllable heaters, a surface of a bore of a barrel;

placing a projectile in a first chamber;

adding a light gas to a second chamber behind the first chamber;

opening first and second valves to purge, with a purge gas, the first chamber;

closing, after the opening of the first and second valves, the first and second valves;

compressing, after the closing of the first and second valves, the light gas added to the second chamber; and

propelling, using the compressed light gas, the projectile through the bore.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the placing of the projectile in the first chamber comprises placing a shear plate to separate the first chamber and the second chamber.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the light gas comprises one or more of hydrogen or helium, and wherein the purge gas comprises one or more of helium, neon, or argon.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the heating of the surface of the bore comprises heating the surface of the bore to a temperature above 700° K.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the heating of the surface of the bore comprises heating portions of the surface of the bore nearer an exit of the barrel than an entrance of the barrel to temperatures that are higher than temperatures to which portions of the surface of the bore, nearer the entrance of the barrel than the exit of the barrel, are heated.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the compressing of the light gas comprises moving, using a railgun armature, a piston in the second chamber.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the compressing of the light gas comprises heating the light gas by creating an electrical arc in the second chamber.
