Abstract

A host establishes an up-to-date, an automated, secure, and Peer-Two-Peer (PSP) communication session with a peripheral. During the communication session, the host controls serialization, prioritization, and delivery of messages being passed. Each message providing command instructions and/or information for processing between the host and the peripheral.

Claims (32)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a processor of a device, an instruction sent from a host device that instructs the device to change a current mode of operation on the device from a host mode of operation to an accessory mode of operation; and

forcing, by the processor, a reboot of the device causing the device to change the current mode of operation from the host mode of operation to the accessory mode of operation and causing the processor to operate the device as a peripheral to the host device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, operating, by the processor, in the accessory mode of operation as the peripheral to the host device following the reboot of the device.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising, decrypting, by the processor, a certificate using a peripheral device key on the device.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising, providing, by the processor, a select string from a decrypted version of the certificate as authentication information to the host device for an authentication to the host device.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising, exchanging, by the processor, configuration information with the host device after the authentication.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising, establishing, by the processor, a secure communication session with the host device based on the configuration information.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising, receiving, by the processor, a message from the host device after the reboot while the device is in the accessory mode of operation and processing the message on the device.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising, providing, by the processor, a message to the host device for the host device to process while the device is in the accessory mode of operation.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving further includes receiving the instruction during a wired connection to the host device and while the device is in the host mode of operation.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising, detecting, by the processor, that the wired connection was lost with the host device and rebooting the device back into the host mode of operation.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising, sending, by the processor, a message to the host device directing the host device to forward the message to a second peripheral device of the host device for the second peripheral device to process.

12. A method, comprising:

detecting, by a processor of a device, a wired connection to a second device; and

in response to the detecting of the wired connection, rebooting, by the processor, the device from a host mode of operation into an accessory mode of operation causing the processor to operate the device as a wired peripheral device to the second device during the wired connection between the device and the second device with the second device operating as a host device to the device.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising, authenticating, by the processor, to the second device following the rebooting and when the device starts in the accessory mode of operation.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising, exchanging, by the processor, information for establishing a secure communication session between the device and the second device after an authentication to the second device.

15. The method of claim 12 further comprising, processing, by the processor, a message received from the second device while the device is in the accessory mode of operation as the peripheral device to the second device.

16. The method of claim 12 further comprising, providing, by the processor, a message to the second device while the device is in the accessory mode of operation as the peripheral device to the second device for the second device to process on behalf of the device.

17. The method of claim 12 further comprising, providing, by the processor a message to the second device while the device is in the accessory mode of operation as the peripheral device to the second device for the second device to deliver to a third device having a separate communication session with the second device, wherein the message is processed by the third device when received over the separate communication session from the second device.

18. The method of claim 12 further comprising, rebooting, by the processor, the device into the host mode of operation when the processor detects the wired connection between the device and the second device is disconnected or lost.

19. A device, comprising:

a processor;

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions; and

the executable instructions when executed by the processor from the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

detecting a wired connection to a host device while the device is being operated as a second host device in a host mode of operation;

forcing a reboot of the device into an accessory mode of operation causing the device after the reboot to operate as a wired peripheral device to the host device over the wired connection; and

processing messages sent over the wired connection from the host device on the device while in the accessory mode of operation as the wired peripheral device of the host device.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the executable instructions when executed by the processor from the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium further cause the processor to perform additional operations comprising:

detecting when the wired connection is lost with or disconnected from the host device; and

forcing a second reboot of the device into the host mode of operation causing the device after the second reboot to operate as the second host device.
