Abstract

Rapid failure detection and recovery in wireless communication networks is needed in order to meet, among other things, carrier class Ethernet transport channel standards. Thus, resilient wireless packet communications is provided using a hardware-assisted rapid transport channel failure detection algorithm and a Gigabit Ethernet data access card with an engine configured accordingly. In networks with various topologies, this is provided in combination with their existing protocols, such as rapid spanning tree and link aggregation protocols, respectively.

Claims (28)

1. A link recovery method comprising:

determining at the physical layer by a first data transmission device a first receive status of a first wireless network link of ‘bad’, the determining being based on at least one first packet received from a second data transmission device over the first wireless network link;

sending by the first data transmission device a second packet to the second data transmission device, the second packet including a second header with the first receive status of ‘bad’, thereby causing the second data transmission device to switch a second transmit status to ‘bad’ based on the first receive status of ‘bad’;

monitoring by the first data transmission device a sequence of first packets arriving over the first wireless network link from the second data transmission device, each of the first packets of the sequence of first packets including a header with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) value and with the second transmit status;

determining by the first data transmission device whether the CRC value is correct for each of the first packets of the sequence of first packets;

in response to a consecutive number of valid CRC values exceeding a valid CRC threshold, setting by the first data transmission device the first receive status of the first wireless network link at the first data transmission device to ‘good’; and

sending by the first data transmission device another second packet to the second data transmission device, the other second packet including another second header with the first receive status of ‘good’, thereby causing the second data transmission device to switch the second transmit status to ‘good’ and to send additional first packets with payload.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises determining there is a traffic alignment error related to payload traffic.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises determining there is a packet received timeout related to payload traffic.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises determining a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) threshold related to payload traffic has been met or exceeded.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of wireless network nodes in a wireless network ring.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing link aggregation.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein performing the link aggregation comprises distributing a dynamic link aggregation key.

8. A first data transmission device comprising:

a network interface configured to receive packets from a wireless network link; and

circuitry configured to perform a method, the method comprising:

determining at the physical layer a first receive status of a first wireless network link of ‘bad’, the determining being based on at least one first packet received from a second data transmission device over the first wireless network link;

sending a second packet to the second data transmission device, the second packet including a second header with the first receive status of ‘bad’, thereby causing the second data transmission device to switch a second transmit status to ‘bad’ based on the first receive status of ‘bad’;

monitoring a sequence of first packets arriving over the first wireless network link from the second data transmission device, each of the first packets of the sequence of first packets including a header with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) value and with the second transmit status;

determining whether the CRC value is correct for each of the first packets of the sequence of first packets;

in response to a consecutive number of valid CRC values exceeding a valid CRC threshold, setting the first receive status of the first wireless network link at the first data transmission device to ‘good’; and

sending another second packet to the second data transmission device, the other second packet including another second header with the first receive status of ‘good’, thereby causing the second data transmission device to switch the second transmit status to ‘good’ and to send additional first packets with payload.

9. The first data transmission device of claim 8 , wherein the circuitry configured to perform determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises circuitry configured to perform determining there is a traffic alignment error related to payload traffic.

10. The first data transmission device of claim 8 , wherein the circuitry configured to perform determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises circuitry configured to perform determining there is a packet received timeout related to payload traffic.

11. The first data transmission device of claim 8 , wherein the circuitry configured to perform determining the first receive status of the first wireless network link of ‘bad’ comprises circuitry configured to perform determining a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) threshold related to payload traffic has been met or exceeded.

12. The first data transmission device of claim 8 , wherein the first data transmission device is one of a plurality of wireless network nodes in a wireless network ring.

13. The first data transmission device of claim 8 , further comprising circuitry configured to perform link aggregation.

14. The first data transmission device of claim 13 , wherein the circuitry configured to perform link aggregation comprises circuitry configured to perform distributing a dynamic link aggregation key.
