Abstract

One embodiment of the present application sets forth an apparatus that includes a composite display layer that transmits a set of composite light. The composite display layer includes a display layer that provides a first subset of light included in the set of composite light, and a first mirror layer parallel to the first display layer that provides a second subset of light included in the set of composite light, where the second subset of light comprises a reflection of a first portion of the first subset of light. The composite display layer also includes a polarizer layer disposed on the composite display layer, where the polarizer layer provides the first portion of the first subset of light to the first mirror layer.

Claims (23)

1. A system comprising:

a wearable device that provides a light field, the wearable device comprising a composite display layer configured to transmit a set of composite light, the composite display layer including:

a first display layer that provides a first subset of light included in the set of composite light, and

a first mirror layer parallel to the first display layer and contactedly aligned with at least one side of the first display layer, wherein the first display layer provides a second subset of light included in the set of composite light, wherein the second subset of light comprises a reflection of a first portion of light transmitted by the first display layer; and

a controller configured to cause the composite display layer to transmit the set of composite light.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable device further comprises a polarizer layer disposed on the composite display layer, wherein the polarizer layer is configured to provide the first portion of the first subset of light to the first mirror layer.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the polarizer layer comprises:

a polarized portion that is disposed over at least the first mirror layer; and

a window portion that is disposed over at least a portion of the first display layer.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the set of composite light comprises a set of non-polarized waves.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the wearable device further comprises a film layer interposed between the polarizer layer and the first mirror layer, and the film layer retards the first portion of the first subset of light provided to the first mirror layer.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the film layer is interposed between the polarizer layer and at least a portion of the first display layer.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the polarizer layer comprises a quarter-wavelength circular polarizer and the film layer comprises a quarter-wavelength retardant film layer.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable device further comprises a first lens located adjacent to the display, and an area of the composite display layer is at least as large as a lens coverage area for the first lens.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable device further comprises a backlight layer configured to emit light that causes the composite display layer to transmit the set of composite light, wherein the first display layer is disposed on the backlight layer.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the composite display layer further comprises a second mirror layer parallel to the first display layer and the first mirror layer, and the first display layer is interposed between the first mirror layer and the second mirror layer.

11. A wearable device that provides a light field, the wearable device comprising a composite display layer configured to transmit a set of composite light, the composite display layer including:

a first display layer that provides a first subset of light included in the set of composite light, and

a first mirror layer parallel to the first display layer and contactedly aligned with at least one side of the first display layer, wherein the first display layer provides a second subset of light included in the set of composite light, wherein the second subset of light comprises a reflection of a first portion of light transmitted by the first display layer.

12. The wearable device of claim 11 , wherein:

the set of composite light comprises a set of circularly-polarized waves,

the first portion of the first subset of light comprises a set of p-polarized waves provided by the polarizer layer to the first mirror layer, and

the second subset of light comprises a set of s-polarized waves that are generated when the first portion of the first subset of light is reflected by the first mirror layer.
