Abstract

Reciprocating rasps for the surgical preparation of the bone prior to the implantation of a glenoid or acetabular component with complex geometry are disclosed. Surgical methods for the use of such reciprocating rasps are also disclosed. Some of the methods include inserting a guide pin into the glenoid of the patient, advancing a reciprocating surgical rasp over the guide pin, reciprocating the surgical rasp so as to abrade bone tissue to form a cavity shaped to receive the glenoid component, and implanting the glenoid component in the cavity.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical instrument system comprising:

a guide pin configured to be inserted into a glenoid of a patient,

a surgical rasp configured to be advanced along the guide pin, the surgical rasp having

a tapered shaft having an inner sidewall,

a cutting head secured to a first end of the tapered shaft, the cutting head being defined by a wedge-shaped body extending between a base and an end,

a V-shaped notch positioned in the end of the wedge-shaped body configured to receive the guide pin,

the inner sidewall of the tapered shaft forming a plurality of elongated openings such that the guide pin can be visualized from more than one vantage point as it is received in the end of the wedge-shaped body, and

a glenoid prosthesis having a body sized and shaped to receive a humeral head, a keel extending from the body of the glenoid prosthesis and having a wedge-shape that corresponds to the wedge-shaped body of the surgical rasp.

2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a bore extending from the V-shaped notch to an opening in the base of the wedge-shaped body, the bore being sized to receive the guide pin.

3. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 wherein the guide pin is a scored guide pin.

The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of elongated openings are positioned in a first section of the tapered shaft having a first diameter, the tapered shaft further including a second section having a second diameter, wherein the first diameter is greater than the second diameter.

5. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the wedge-shaped body includes a cutting surface having a plurality of cutting teeth extending from the wedge-shaped body between the base and the end.

6. The surgical instrument system of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of cutting teeth includes a plurality of curved cutting teeth.

7. The surgical instrument system of claim 5 , further comprising a lead cutting surface at the end of the wedge-shaped body, the V-shaped notch extending into the lead cutting surface and through the plurality of cutting teeth.

8. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the wedge-shaped body includes a plurality of curved cutting sections and a plurality of planar cutting sections.

9. The surgical instrument system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of curved cutting sections and the plurality of planar cutting sections extend from the base of the wedge-shaped body to a lead cutting section positioned opposite the base of the wedge-shaped body.

10. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a depth stop secured to the cutting head.

11. A surgical instrument system comprising:

a surgical rasp with a cutting head having a wedge-shaped body,

a shaft having a first section with a first diameter and a second section with a second diameter, the second section of the shaft being positioned between the first section of the shaft and a base portion of the wedge-shaped body, the shaft further including a proximal end configured to fit into a chuck of a reciprocating power tool,

a guide pin configured to extend through the wedge-shaped body and the shaft, the shaft configured to allow the wedge-shaped body to reciprocate along the guide pin, the wedge-shaped body including a V-shaped notch positioned in an end of the wedge-shaped body configured to receive the guide pin,

the second section of the shaft further including an inner side wall forming a plurality of elongated openings such that the guide pin can be visualized from more than one vantage point as it is received in the end of the wedge-shaped body, and

a glenoid prosthesis having a body sized and shaped to receive a humeral head, a keel extending from the body of the glenoid prosthesis and having a wedge-shape that corresponds to the wedge-shaped body of the surgical rasp.

12. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , further comprising a bore extending from the V-shaped notch to an opening in the base portion of the wedge-shaped body, the bore being sized to receive the guide pin.

13. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 wherein the guide pin is a scored guide pin.

14. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , wherein the wedge-shaped body includes a cutting surface having a plurality of cutting teeth extending from the wedge-shaped body between the base portion and the end.

15. The surgical instrument system of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of cutting teeth includes a plurality of curved cutting teeth.

16. The surgical instrument system of claim 14 , further comprising a lead cutting surface at the end of the wedge-shaped body, the V-shaped notch extending into the lead cutting surface and through the plurality of cutting teeth.

17. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , wherein the wedge-shaped body includes a plurality of curved cutting sections and a plurality of planar cutting sections.

18. The surgical instrument system of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of curved cutting sections and the plurality of planar cutting sections extend from the base portion of the wedge-shaped body to a lead cutting section positioned opposite the base portion of the wedge-shaped body.

19. The surgical instrument system of claim 11 , further comprising a depth stop secured to the cutting head.
