Abstract

The present invention provides a method and system for providing on-site electrical power to a fracturing operation, and an electrically powered fracturing system. Natural gas can be used to drive a turbine generator in the production of electrical power. A scalable, electrically powered fracturing fleet is provided to pump fluids for the fracturing operation, obviating the need for a constant supply of diesel fuel to the site and reducing the site footprint and infrastructure required for the fracturing operation, when compared with conventional systems. The treatment fluid can comprise a water-based fracturing fluid or a waterless liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fracturing fluid.

Claims (29)

1. A system for hydraulic fracturing comprising:

at least one electrical transformer and at least one turbine generator for fracturing operations at a well site, wherein the at least one turbine generator is operatively coupled to at least one electric motor such that the at least one turbine generator is adapted to supply electricity to the at least one electric motor;

a plurality of electrically powered pumps driven by the at least one electric motor, the plurality of electrically powered pumps being adapted to pressurize and pump a blended fracturing fluid into a wellbore at the well site; and

at least one blender capable of providing blended fracturing fluid to the plurality of electrically powered pumps, wherein the at least one blender further comprises a plurality of pumps, wherein a pump is adapted to pump an unblended fracturing fluid through an inlet manifold into at least one blender, wherein a pump is adapted to pump blended fracturing fluid from at least one blender into an outlet manifold.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outlet manifold is operatively coupled to an outlet crossing.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one turbine generator is adapted to receive a hydrocarbon fuel source that powers the at least one turbine generator to produce electricity, and wherein the hydrocarbon fuel source comprises at least one of the following: natural gas, liquid fuel, and condensate.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one blender further comprises a first blending tub.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the at least one blender further comprises a second blending tub.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the inlet manifold is coupled to the first and the second blending tub.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the outlet manifold is coupled to the first and the second blending tub.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the inlet manifold is coupled to an inlet crossing.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the inlet crossing delivers the unblended fracturing fluid from the inlet manifold into the first blending tub and the second blending tub.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blended fracturing fluid comprises liquefied petroleum gas.

11. A method for delivering a fracturing fluid to a wellbore comprising:

providing at least one of a plurality of electrically powered pumps adapted to pressurize and pump a blended fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a well site;

providing at least one electric motor operatively coupled to the at least one of a plurality of electrically powered pumps such that the at least one electric motor is adapted to power at least one of the plurality of electrically powered pumps;

providing at least one turbine generator, serving as a dedicated source of electricity, for fracturing operations on the well site, wherein the at least one turbine generator is operatively coupled to the at least one electric motor such that the dedicated source of electricity is adapted to supply electricity to the at least one electric motor for driving at least one of a plurality of electrically powered pumps;

providing at least one blender adapted to supply the fracturing fluid to the at least one of a plurality of electrically powered pumps, wherein the at least one blender further comprises a plurality of pumps, wherein a pump is adapted to pump an unblended fracturing fluid through at least one inlet manifold into the at least one blender, wherein a pump is adapted to pump a blended fracturing fluid from the at least one blender into the at least one outlet manifold; and

pumping the blended fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a well site.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one outlet manifold is operatively coupled to an outlet crossing.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one turbine generator is adapted to receive a hydrocarbon fuel source that powers the at least one turbine generator to produce electricity, and wherein the hydrocarbon fuel source comprises at least one of the following: natural gas, liquid fuel, and condensate.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising providing a first inlet manifold operatively coupled to a first electrically powered inlet pump of the plurality of electrically powered pumps of the at least one blender and a second inlet manifold operatively coupled to a second electrically powered inlet pump of the plurality of electrically powered pumps of the at least one blender.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising providing a first outlet manifold operatively coupled to a first electrically powered outlet pump of the plurality of electrically powered pumps of the at least one blender and a second outlet manifold operatively coupled to a second electrically powered outlet pump of the plurality of electrically powered pumps of the at least one blender.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the at least one blender further comprises providing a second blending tub coupled to a second blending tub pump.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein an outlet crossing supplies blended fracturing fluid from the second blending tub to the least one outlet manifold.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one blender further comprises providing a first blending tub operatively coupled to a first blending tub pump.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising providing an inlet crossing and supplying unblended fracturing fluid from the at least one inlet manifold to the first blending tub and the second blending tub.
