Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and systems for performing an ophthalmic diagnostic test are disclosed. In one aspect, a head-wearable device for administering an ophthalmic test to a subject can comprise a head-wearable frame for mounting the device onto the subject's head, and a light seal configured for coupling to the frame so as to isolate at least one eye of the subject from ambient light when the device is worn by the subject.

Claims (35)

1. A ophthalmic testing system for measuring an ability of an eye of a test subject to adapt to darkness using one or more psychophysical responses, received from the test subject over a period of time, which indicate the test subject's observation of a stimulus light, the ophthalmic testing system comprising:

a head-wearable frame comprising:

an optical interface configured to optically couple the eye of the test subject to an image plane presented to the eye via the head-wearable frame; and

a light source;

a processor coupled to the head-wearable frame;

a memory coupled to the processor; and

one or more computer programs stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the processor, the one or more programs including instructions that upon execution control the light source to:

generate a fixation light and present a fixation point within the image plane, the fixation point being configured for focusing attention of the test subject during an ophthalmic test;

generate a photobleaching light and present a photobleaching area within the image plane, the photobleaching area being configured to photobleach a photoreceptor of the eye;

generate the stimulus light and present a stimulus area within the image plane, wherein the stimulus area is smaller than the photobleaching area; and

receive the one or more psychophysical responses from the test subject;

monitor the one or more psychophysical responses provided by the test subject, compare the one or more responses to a baseline response stored in the memory to determine whether modifying a configuration of the ophthalmic test brings the subject's response closer to the baseline response, and adjust the configuration of the ophthalmic test;

wherein the configuration comprises a length of the ophthalmic test.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more psychophysical responses indicate the test subject's observation of the stimulus light after exposure to the photobleaching light.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the light source comprises a laser light source.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the stimulus light comprises varying light intensities.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to extend the length of the ophthalmic test.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to increase the intensity of the stimulus light.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to decrease the intensity of the stimulus light.

8. The system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is coupled to a communications network and is configured to communicate with a remote entity via the communications network.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the remote entity comprises a cloud-based record folder.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the remote entity comprises a provider interface configured to at least one of: send data to the system, receive results of the ophthalmic test from the system, interpret ophthalmic test data, provide ophthalmic test interpretation, collect information from the system, and report test results information.

11. The system of claim 4 , further comprising an electromechanical interface configured to receive the one or more psychophysical responses from the test subject and forward to the processor.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the electromechanical interface is coupled to the head-wearable frame via Bluetooth® communication.

13. The system of claim 4 , further comprising an audio input element configured to receive the one or more psychophysical responses from the test subject and forward to the processor.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more psychophysical responses comprise an audio response received from the test subject.

15. The system of claim 4 , further comprising a light seal configured to minimize passage of ambient light to the eye.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the head-wearable frame further comprises a coupling feature configured to connect to a corresponding mating feature on the light seal.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the light seal comprises at least one of: a polymeric material and a material comprising one or more fibers.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the light seal comprises a conformable body having at least one opening configured to be substantially aligned with the eye of the test subject.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the conformable body is configured for removable coupling with the head-wearable frame such that upon coupling of the conformable body with the head-wearable frame, a combination of the conformable body and the head-wearable frame minimizes the passage of ambient light to the eye.

20. The system of claim 4 , wherein the head-wearable frame comprises an internal surface configured to be at least partially placed against a portion of a face of the test subject.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the internal surface of the head-wearable frame comprises a material cleanable with a medical grade cleaner.

22. The system of claim 4 , wherein the stimulus area and the fixation point are displayed in non-overlapping regions of the image plane.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the stimulus area is presented as a circular area within the image plane.
