Abstract

A battery module can include multiple cell tubes and a conductive plate. The multiple cell tubes can accommodate multiple battery cells within the multiple cell tubes so that individual of the multiple battery cells are positioned within individual of the multiple cell tubes. The conductive plate can include a printed circuit board. The printed circuit board can include a first conductive layer and an isolating layer. The isolating layer can include a blind hole through which a wire bonding extends. The wire bonding can be electrically connected to the first conductive layer.

Claims (28)

1. A battery module comprising:

a housing configured to contain a plurality of battery cells;

a printed circuit board within the housing and comprising a conductive layer and an isolating layer attached to a side of the conductive layer, the isolating layer having a plurality of holes that expose the side of the conductive layer; and

a wire bonding extending through one of the plurality of holes in the isolating layer to contact the side of the conductive layer, the wire bonding being configured to pass a current from at least one of the plurality of battery cells to the conductive layer.

2. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the conductive layer is configured to pass a current from all of the plurality of battery cells.

3. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises another conductive layer that is thinner than the conductive layer and includes a plurality of printed circuit board tracks, the another conductive layer being attached to a first side of the isolating layer that is opposite from a second side of the isolating layer to which the conductive layer is attached.

4. The battery module of claim 3 , further comprising an electronic component mounted on the plurality of printed circuit board tracks.

5. The battery module of claim 4 , wherein the electronic component comprises a sensor configured to monitor a voltage, a current, a temperature, or an internal pressure of at least one of the plurality of battery cells.

6. The battery module of claim 4 , wherein the electronic component comprises a switch configured to electrically connect and disconnect one of the plurality of battery cells.

7. The battery module of claim 4 , wherein the electronic component comprises a controller configured to control a supply of power by the plurality of battery cells.

8. The battery module of claim 3 , wherein the conductive layer comprises aluminum, and the another conductive layer comprises copper.

9. The battery module of claim 3 , further comprising an additional wire bonding configured to electrically connect the another conductive layer and a terminal of one of the plurality of battery cells.

10. The battery module of claim 9 , wherein the additional wire bonding is configured to operate as a fuse and disconnect responsive to the additional wire bonding reaching a threshold temperature.

11. The battery module of claim 9 , wherein the terminal is a negative terminal.

12. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the wire bonding comprises aluminum.

13. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the wire bonding is configured to operate as a fuse and disconnect responsive to the wire bonding reaching a threshold temperature.

14. The battery module of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of cell tubes configured to accommodate the plurality of battery cells within the plurality of cell tubes; and

a plurality of connectors positioned in a plurality of openings in the printed circuit board, the plurality of connectors being configured to connect the plurality of cell tubes to the printed circuit board.

15. The battery module of claim 14 , further comprising a sensor that connects to the conductive layer and extends through one of the plurality of openings, the sensor being configured to monitor a parameter associated with one of the plurality of battery cells.

16. The battery module of claim 14 , wherein one of the plurality of openings has a common axis with one of the plurality of cell tubes and one of the plurality of battery cells.

17. The battery module of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of connectors are configured to provide structural support and thermal isolation.

18. The battery module of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of cell tubes are configured to accommodate a total of between 4 battery cells and 32 battery cells, inclusive.

19. The battery module of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of cell tubes comprises aluminum, steel, or carbon.

20. A battery module comprising:

a housing configured to contain a plurality of battery cells;

a printed circuit board within the housing and comprising a conductive layer and an isolating layer attached to a side of the conductive layer, the isolating layer having a plurality of holes that expose the side of the conductive layer; and

means for electrically connecting the side of the conductive layer to one of the plurality of battery cells through one of the plurality of holes.
