Abstract

A first or second computer viewing a virtual canvas may be a host computer for a live source object requiring authorization between a host and a non-host computer by creating a live source window for the live source object requiring authorization (ARLSW) within the virtual canvas on the host computer, sending metadata information for the ARLSW to the non-host computer so that the ARLSW is at the same location on the virtual canvas for the first and second computers, and streaming the live source object requiring authorization to the ARLSW from the host computer to the non-host computer. When the host computer for the ARLSW leaves the virtual canvas and no other non-host computer for ARLSW in the canvas is known to have authorization to view the ARLSW, a placeholder screen is displayed in the ARLSW on the virtual canvas.

Claims (30)

1. A method of collaborating between a first computer associated with a first display at a first location and a second computer associated with a second display at a second location, the method comprising:

establishing a connection between the first and second computers;

starting a virtual canvas on the first computer;

sending the virtual canvas from the first computer to the second computer;

wherein either the first computer or the second computer may be a host computer for a file-based object on the canvas, sending the file-based object between a host computer and a non-host computer so that the file-based object is located on the same location on the canvas for the first and second computers; and

wherein either the first computer or the second computer may be a host computer for a live source on the virtual canvas, streaming a live source object requiring authorization between a host computer running the live source object requiring authorization and a non-host computer by

creating a live source window for the live source object requiring authorization within the virtual canvas on the host computer,

sending metadata information for the live source window to the non-host computer so that the live source window is at the same location on the virtual canvas for the first and second computers, and

streaming the live source object requiring authorization to the live source window from the host computer to the non-host computer, and

on condition that the host computer for the live source object requiring authorization leaves the virtual canvas and no other non-host computer for the live source object requiring authorization viewing the canvas is known to have authorization to view the live source object requiring authorization, a placeholder screen is displayed in the live source window on the virtual canvas.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the placeholder screen includes a window with a label based on the content of the live source window and an obscured screen.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the obscured screen includes a play button.

4. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the obscured screen displays information that the content is not available.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the placeholder screen includes a window with a label based on the content of the live source window and a login screen for the live source window.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the placeholder screen includes a window with a label based on the content of the live source window and a snapshot of the live source window.

The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein on condition that the host computer for the live source object requiring authorization rejoins the virtual canvas the live source object requiring authorization and the live source object requiring authorization is not currently activated, the live source object requiring authorization is automatically activated.

The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein, on condition that a non-host computer for the live source object requiring authorization viewing the canvas has known authorization for the live source object requiring authorization, the live source object requiring authorization is automatically activated.

9. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein when the live source object requiring authorization is streamed, the live source window is automatically activated and locked.

10. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein, on condition that the live source window displaying the live source object requiring authorization is moved off of the canvas on both the first and second displays, the live source window is automatically paused.

11. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising providing a participation menu on top of the canvas that remains at a constant location on a portion of the canvas being viewed.

12. A non-transitory computer readable storage device having computer readable instructions that when executed by circuitry cause the circuitry to:

establish a connection between a first computer and a second computer;

start a virtual canvas on the first computer;

send the virtual canvas from the first computer to the second computer;

wherein either the first computer or the second computer is a host computer for a file-based object on the canvas, sending the file-based object between a host computer and a non-host computer so that the file-based object is located on the same location on the canvas for the first and second computers; and

wherein either the first computer or the second computer is host computer for a live source object requiring authorization on the virtual canvas, streaming a live source object requiring authorization between a host computer running the live source object and a non-host computer by

creating a live source window for the live source object requiring authorization within the virtual canvas on the host computer,

sending metadata information for the live source window to the non-host computer so that the live source window is at the same location on the virtual canvas for the first and second computers, and

streaming the live source object requiring authorization to the live source window from the host computer to the non-host computer, and

on condition that the host computer for the live source object requiring authorization leaves the virtual canvas, a placeholder screen is displayed on the virtual canvas.
