Surgical drape with separable elements
The present disclosure relates to a surgical drape to be used in conjunction with a surgical procedure, and more specifically to a surgical drape that includes one or more of the following: (1) a patient drape for use with a standalone non-draped image acquisition device; (2) a patient drape for use with a standalone non-draped image acquisition device with image guidance navigation technology; (3) the means to provide temporary sterile coverage of an underlying sterile field; (4) the means to provide sterile separation of at least a portion, if not the entire temporary sterile coverage; and (5) the means to provide covering of the undersurface of the operating surface and enclosing any suspended medical devices, wires, cables, tubes, etc.
1. A surgical draping system, comprising:
a surgical drape, having a generally rectangular shape, an area defined by a predetermined length and a predetermined width, and a longitudinal serrated tear line; and
a sterility maintenance element, extending an entirety of the predetermined length of the surgical drape, wherein the longitudinal serrated tear line of the surgical drape is disposed below the sterility maintenance element,
wherein the sterility maintenance element is adapted to be positioned to maintain a sterile field,
wherein the sterility maintenance element is selectively reconfigurable between a covering position and a non-covering position, wherein the sterility maintenance element covers the longitudinal serrated tear line of the surgical drape when the sterility maintenance element is in the covering position, and
wherein the sterility maintenance element is adapted to be reconfigurable to the non-covering position to allow the surgical drape to be separated along the longitudinal serrated tear line such that longitudinally effaced lateral sides of the surgical drape separate and fall away from the sterile field.
2. The surgical draping system of claim 1 , wherein the sterility maintenance element comprises a selectively separable portion of the surgical drape.

The surgical draping system of claim 2 , wherein the selectively separable portion comprises a pleat extending the entirety of the predetermined length of the drape, wherein the pleat covers the longitudinal serrated tear line of the surgical drape when the sterility maintenance element is in the covering position, and wherein the pleat is adapted to be opened when the sterility maintenance element is reconfigured from the covering position to the non-covering position.
4. The surgical draping system of claim 2 , wherein the surgical drape further comprises first and second boxed corners or edges, adapted to be secured about a surgical table.
5. The surgical draping system of claim 2 , wherein the sterility maintenance element forms a generally Z-shaped cross-section when in the covering position.
6. The surgical draping system of claim 1 , further comprising a releasable fastener, holding the sterility maintenance element in the covering position and adapted to allow the sterility maintenance element to be reconfigured into the non-covering position when released.
7. The surgical draping system of claim 6 , wherein the releasable fastener is adapted to be released by pulling of a first end of the surgical drape in a first direction and pulling of a second end of the surgical drape in a second direction.

The surgical draping system of claim 7 , wherein the surgical drape is adapted to be separated along the longitudinal serrated tear line by further pulling of the first end of the surgical drape in the first direction and further pulling of the second end of the surgical drape in the second direction.
9. The surgical draping system of claim 7 , wherein the second direction is antiparallel to the first direction.
10. The surgical draping system of claim 7 , wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.
11. The surgical draping system of claim 1 , further comprising a superior cover mounted to a middle portion of the surgical drape adjacent to the tear line, wherein the surgical drape is adapted to be separated along the longitudinal serrated tear line when the superior cover is pulled in a first direction and an end of the surgical drape opposite the superior cover in a second direction.
12. The surgical draping system of claim 11 , wherein the superior cover forms a cuff end fold adapted to receive a user's hands for pulling the superior cover in the first direction.
13. The surgical draping system of claim 11 , further comprising:
a first handle mounted to the superior cover, adapted to be grasped for pulling the superior cover in the first direction; and
a second handle mounted to the end of the surgical drape opposite the superior cover, adapted to be grasped for pulling the end of the surgical drape opposite the superior cover in the second direction.
14. The surgical draping system of claim 11 , wherein the second direction is antiparallel to the first direction.
15. The surgical draping system of claim 11 , wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.
16. The surgical draping system of claim 1 , further comprising:
an under-table wrapping element, adapted to be wrapped around a bottom of a surgical table and comprising a loose end adapted to be affixed to a side of the surgical drape.
17. The surgical draping system of claim 16 , further comprising:
a first handle mounted to a first end of the surgical drape; and
a second handle mounted to a second end of the surgical drape,
wherein the surgical drape is adapted to be separated along the longitudinal serrated tear line when the first handle is pulled in a first direction and the second handle is pulled in a second direction.
18. The surgical draping system of claim 17 , wherein the second direction is antiparallel to the first direction.
19. The surgical draping system of claim 17 , wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.
20. The surgical draping system of claim 1 , wherein the sterility maintenance element comprises a sealed flap.
