Abstract

A method for managing the flow of water beneath a ground surface uses modules. Assemblies of such modules are disclosed. The modules include supports and a deck portion, and the supports are spaced apart and form multiple channels with a main section of the deck portion. The deck portion also includes at least one section extending from a main section.

Claims (39)

1. A module for use in an assembly comprising a plurality of modules for managing the detention or retention of fluid beneath a ground surface, the module comprising:

a deck portion having a main section and a thickness, the deck portion having straight first and second side edges along their length, the first and second side edges extending in a first direction between first and second ends each having a corresponding end edge, the end edges being straight along their length between the first and second side edges;

first and second spaced-apart supports that extend downward from the deck portion;

wherein the deck portion is located on top of the first and second supports, and the first and second supports are load-bearing;

wherein the first support has an outer side edge that is spaced inwardly from the first side edge of the deck portion so that part of the deck portion extends beyond the outer side edge of the first support to form a first cantilevered section of the deck portion, the first cantilevered section extending laterally from the main section;

wherein the second support has an outer side edge that is spaced inwardly from the second side edge of the deck portion so that part of the deck portion extends beyond the outer side edge of the second support to form a second cantilevered section of the deck portion, the second cantilevered section extending laterally from the main section opposite the first cantilevered section;

wherein a first outer longitudinal channel is at least partially defined below the first cantilevered section, the first outer longitudinal channel permitting fluid flow therein in the first direction;

wherein a second outer longitudinal channel is at least partially defined below the second cantilevered section, the second outer longitudinal channel permitting fluid flow therein in the first direction,

a cross channel extending below the deck portion in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction, the cross channel permitting fluid flow therein;

wherein the first and second supports have a lower portion extending upward from a bottom of the first module and spaced inwardly from a nearest one of the first and second end edges of the deck portion so that the first and second ends of the deck portion extend beyond the lower portion of a nearest one of the first and second supports to partially define outer cross channels in the second direction below the first and second ends of the deck portion, the outer cross channels permitting fluid flow therein, and

wherein the outer longitudinal channels, cross channel and outer cross channels of the module are in fluid communication with one another.

2. The module of claim 1 wherein the deck portion including the first and second cantilevered sections and the supports comprise a single, integrally-formed piece of precast concrete.

3. An assembly for managing the detention or retention of fluid beneath a ground surface, the assembly comprising:

at least one first module and at least one side module;

wherein the at least one first module comprises:

a deck portion having a main section and a thickness, the deck portion having straight first and second side edges along their length, the first and second side edges extending in a first direction between first and second ends each having a corresponding end edge, the end edges being straight along their length between the first and second side edges;

first and second spaced-apart supports that extend downward from the deck portion;

wherein the deck portion is located on top of the first and second supports, and the first and second supports are load-bearing;

wherein the first support has an outer side edge that is spaced inwardly from the first side edge of the deck portion so that part of the deck portion extends beyond the outer side edge of the first support to form a first cantilevered section of the deck portion, the first cantilevered section extending laterally from the main section;

wherein the second support has an outer side edge that is spaced inwardly from the second side edge of the deck portion so that part of the deck portion extends beyond the outer side edge of the second support to form a second cantilevered section of the deck portion, the second cantilevered section extending laterally from the main section opposite the first cantilevered section;

wherein a first outer longitudinal channel is at least partially defined below the first cantilevered section, the first outer longitudinal channel permitting fluid flow therein in the first direction;

wherein a second outer longitudinal channel is at least partially defined below the second cantilevered section, the second outer longitudinal channel permitting fluid flow therein in the first direction,

a cross channel extending below the deck portion in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction, the cross channel permitting fluid flow therein;

wherein the first and second supports have a lower portion extending upward from a bottom of the first module and spaced inwardly from a nearest one of the first and second end edges of the deck portion so that the first and second ends of the deck portion extend beyond the lower portion of a nearest one of the first and second supports to partially define outer cross channels in the second direction below the first and second ends of the deck portion, the outer cross channels permitting fluid flow therein, and

wherein the outer longitudinal channels, cross channel and outer cross channels of the first module are in fluid communication with one another;

wherein the at least one side module comprises:

a deck portion having a main section, first and second side edges and first and second end edges;

at least two supports disposed below the deck portion and extending to a bottom of the side module;

the supports being spaced apart, at least two of the supports together with the deck portion at least partially defining an interior channel of the side module, the interior channel permitting fluid flow therein, and

wherein one of the supports comprises a wall.

4. The assembly of claim 3 wherein the deck portion of the side module further comprises a cantilevered section extending laterally from the side module deck portion main section, wherein a side edge of the side module deck portion is a side edge of the side module cantilevered section.

5. The assembly of claim 3 wherein a thickness of the deck portion of the first module is smaller than a deck thickness that would be required if the deck portion did not have cantilevered sections established by supports spaced inward from the opposing first and second side edges.

6. The assembly of claim 3 wherein each first module and each side module comprises an integrally-formed piece of precast concrete.

7. The assembly of claim 3 further comprising a plurality of side modules, at least some of the plurality of side modules being arranged in the first direction whereby the walls of the at least some of the plurality of side modules form an exterior barrier for the assembly.

8. The assembly of claim 3 further comprising a plurality of first modules, wherein at least two deck portions of adjacent first modules are contiguous to one another.

9. The assembly of claim 8 wherein each outer cross channel of the plurality of first modules has approximately one-half of a cross-sectional area of the cross channel of said first module so that when two first modules are positioned adjoining one another end to end, one outer cross channel of one first module adjoins one outer cross channel of the adjoining first module to provide an outer cross channel having approximately a same cross sectional area as the cross channel that is wholly within a single one of the first modules.

10. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the first and second outer longitudinal channels of the plurality of first modules have a substantially identical cross-sectional area so that when two first modules are positioned adjoining one another side by side, one of the first and second outer longitudinal channels of one first module adjoins one of the first and second outer longitudinal channels of the adjoining first module to provide a whole outer longitudinal channel having a cross-sectional area that is twice as large as the cross-sectional area of one of the first and second outer longitudinal channels.

11. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the plurality of first modules are arranged in at least two rows and at least two columns, the rows extending in the first direction, the columns extending in the second direction.

12. The assembly of claim 3 wherein the deck portion of the side module further comprises a cantilevered section extending laterally from the main section, wherein a side edge of the side module deck portion is a side edge of the cantilevered section.
