Abstract

A bone positioning guide may be used as part of a bunion correction procedure. The bone positioning guide can include a bone engagement member configured to be positioned on a medial side of a first metatarsal of a foot and a tip separated from the bone engagement member by a distance effective to position the tip on a lateral side of a second metatarsal and in an intermetatarsal space between the second metatarsal and a third metatarsal. The bone positioning guide can also include a mechanism operable to reduce the distance between the bone engagement member and the tip, thereby causing the first metatarsal to move in at least a transverse plane to reduce an intermetatarsal angle between the first metatarsal and the second metatarsal.

Claims (50)

1. A bone positioning guide for a bunion correction procedure, the bone positioning guide comprising:

a bone engagement member configured to be positioned on a medial side of a first metatarsal of a foot;

a tip separated from the bone engagement member by a distance effective to position the tip on a lateral side of a second metatarsal and in an intermetatarsal space between the second metatarsal and a third metatarsal; and

a mechanism operable to reduce the distance between the bone engagement member and the tip, thereby causing the first metatarsal to move in at least a transverse plane to reduce an intermetatarsal angle between the first metatarsal and the second metatarsal.

2. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism is operable to one of:

move the bone engagement toward the tip;

move the tip toward the bone engagement member; and

move both the bone engagement member and the tip toward each other.

3. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone engagement member defines a cannulation through which a fixation wire is configured to be inserted.

4. The bone positioning guide of claim 3 , wherein the fixation wire is a K-wire.

5. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone positioning guide comprises a stop configured to limit a depth of insertion of the tip.

6. The bone positioning guide of claim 5 , wherein:

the tip defines a surface configured to contact the lateral side of the second metatarsal, and

the stop provides a dorsal contact surface configured to contact a dorsal portion of the second metatarsal, when the tip is inserted plantarly relative to the second metatarsal.

7. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone engagement member is configured to contact the medial side of the first metatarsal.

8. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone engagement member is a planar surface.

9. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone engagement member defines a concave surface configured to face the medial side of the first metatarsal.

10. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the tip defines a curved shape configured to face the lateral side of the second metatarsal.

11. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone positioning guide is fabricated from at least two components that are joined together to form the bone positioning guide.

12. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone positioning guide is fabricated from a radiolucent material.

13. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism comprises a threaded shaft.

14. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism comprises a rack and a pinion.

15. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism comprises a sliding connection.

16. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator configured to actuate the mechanism.

17. The bone positioning guide of claim 1 , wherein the bone positioning guide further comprises a main body member, wherein the bone engagement member is positioned on one side of the main body member, and the tip is positioned on another side of the main body member.

18. The bone positioning guide of claim 17 , wherein

the main body member defines a base, a first leg carrying the bone engagement member, and a second leg defining the tip;

the base is configured to extend in a medial-to-lateral direction across a dorsal surface of the first metatarsal and across a dorsal surface of the second metatarsal;

the first leg extends downwardly from the base to position the bone engagement member on the medial side of the first metatarsal; and

the second leg extends downwardly from the base to position the tip on the lateral side of the second metatarsal.

19. A bone positioning guide for a bunion correction procedure, the bone positioning guide comprising:

a bridge configured to extend in a medial-to-lateral direction across a dorsal surface of a first metatarsal of a foot and across a dorsal surface of a second metatarsal of the foot;

a bone engagement member provided on a first side of the bridge, the bone engagement member being configured to be positioned on a medial side of the first metatarsal;

a tip provided on a second side of the bridge, the tip being configured to be positioned on a lateral side of the second metatarsal and in an intermetatarsal space between the second metatarsal and a third metatarsal; and

means for adjusting a distance between the bone engagement member and the tip so as to cause the first metatarsal to move in at least a transverse plane to reduce an intermetatarsal angle between the first metatarsal and the second metatarsal.

20. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the means for adjusting comprises a threaded shaft.

21. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the means for adjusting comprises a rack and a pinion.

22. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the means for adjusting comprises a sliding connection.

23. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , further comprising an actuator configured to actuate the means for adjusting.

24. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the bone engagement member defines a cannulation through which a fixation wire is configured to be inserted.

25. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the bone positioning guide comprises a stop configured to limit a depth of insertion of the tip.

26. The bone positioning guide of claim 25 , wherein:

the tip defines a surface configured to contact the lateral side of the second metatarsal, and

the stop provides a dorsal contact surface configured to contact a dorsal portion of the second metatarsal, when the tip is inserted plantarly relative to the second metatarsal.

27. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the bone engagement member is configured to contact the medial side of the first metatarsal.

28. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein:

the bone engagement member defines one of a planar surface and a concave surface configured to face the medial side of the first metatarsal; and

the tip defines a curved shape configured to face the lateral side of the second metatarsal.

29. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , wherein the means for adjusting comprises means for adjusting a position of the bone engagement member relative to the bridge.

30. The bone positioning guide of claim 19 , further comprising a leg carrying the bone engagement member, wherein the leg extends downwardly from the bridge and is configured to position the bone engagement member on the medial side of the first metatarsal.
