Abstract

This disclosure relates generally to optically-switchable devices, and more particularly, to systems, apparatus, and methods for controlling optically-switchable devices. In some implementations, the apparatus includes an interface for communicating with window controllers, and the apparatus includes one or more processors. A processor can be configured to cause status information received from a window controller to be processed. The status information can indicate at least a tint status of one or more optically-switchable devices controlled by the window controller. In response to receiving the status information, one or more tint commands can be sent via the interface to the window controller.

Claims (18)

1. A method for controlling at least one tintable window, the method comprising:

controlling tint of the at least one tintable window using a network that is (A) operatively coupled to redundant controllers, (B) operatively coupled to (I) an air flow sensor and/or (II) an occupancy sensor configured to detect occupant presence, and/or (C) is configured to (a) consider a surface area of the at least one tintable window and (b) adjust power requirements nonlinearly with respect to the surface area, which power requirements are for tinting the at least one tintable window.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the redundant controllers are part of a hierarchical control system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one controller of the redundant controllers is configured to detect an error condition.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the error condition comprises a power spike, a short condition, or damage to the at least one tintable window.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the error condition is detected based at least on a comparison of (i) raw values of electrical characteristics and (ii) expected values of the electrical characteristics.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to communicate data indicating the error condition to a power management module.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one controller of the redundant controllers is configured to poll the at least one tintable window for an identifier of the at least one tintable window.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the identifier is transmitted as a wireless beacon.

9. An apparatus for controlling at least one tintable window, the apparatus comprising at least one controller configured to:

control tint of the at least one tintable window using a network that is (A) operatively coupled to redundant controllers including the at least one controller, (B) operatively coupled to (I) an air flow sensor and/or (II) an occupancy sensor configured to detect occupant presence, and/or (C) is configured to (a) consider a surface area of the at least one tintable window and (b) adjust power requirements nonlinearly with respect to the surface area, which power requirements are for tinting the at least one tintable window.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the redundant controllers are part of a hierarchical control system.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one controller of the redundant controllers is configured to detect an error condition.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the error condition comprises a power spike, a short condition, or damage to the at least one tintable window.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the error condition is detected based at least on a comparison of (i) raw values of electrical characteristics and (ii) expected values of the electrical characteristics.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to communicate data indicating the error condition to a power management module.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein at least one controller of the redundant controllers is configured to poll the at least one tintable window for an identifier of the at least one tintable window.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the identifier is transmitted as a wireless beacon.
