Abstract

A cargo restraint panel may include a foam component. That foam component may have at least one polymer foam sheet. A front facing material may be bonded to and substantially cover a front face of the foam component. A rear facing material may be bonded to and substantially cover a rear face of the foam component. The cargo restraint panel may include one or more edge guards. Cargo may be secured in a railcar or other conveyance by, e.g., placing cargo restraint panels between cargo units.

Claims (52)

1 . A cargo restraint panel comprising:

a foam component comprising a front face, a rear face, and a plurality of side faces extending between the front face and the rear face, wherein

a plurality of front edges are formed at meetings of the front face and the plurality of side faces, and

a plurality of rear edges are formed at meetings of the rear face and the plurality of side faces;

a plurality of plastic guards, attached to the foam component, extending over the front edges and the rear edges, wherein

the plastic guards extend over regions of the front face adjacent the front edges, regions of the side faces adjacent the front edges, regions of the side faces adjacent the rear edges, and regions of the rear face adjacent the rear edges,

a first plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards, extends over an entirety of a front edge of the plurality of front edges, and

a portion of a second plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards, is located between a side face, of the plurality of side faces, and a first portion of the first plastic guard;

a front facing material bonded to and extending over the front face, wherein a portion of the front facing material contacts a portion of the front face and is situated between the portion of the front face and an inner surface of a second portion of the first plastic guard, wherein the second portion of the first plastic guard extends over the portion of the front face; and

a rear facing material bonded to and extending over the rear face.

The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the rear facing material contacts a portion of the rear face and is situated between the portion of the rear face and an inner surface of a portion of a third plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards, extending over the portion of the rear face.

3 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein the first plastic guard comprises a single piece that extends over the portion of the front face and a portion of the side face adjacent the portion of the front face.

4 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein each of the front facing material and the rear facing material comprises a polymer film.

5 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein each of the front facing material and the rear facing material comprises a polymer coating applied by spraying.

6 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein each of the front facing material and the rear facing material comprises one or more of: polyester, polyethylene terephthalate, a urethane, or an epoxy resin.

7 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein each of the front facing material and the rear facing material comprises fiber reinforcing.

8 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein the front face has an area of at least 16 square feet.

9 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein the foam component is a single polymer foam sheet.

10 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein

the foam component comprises first and second polymer foam sheets,

the first polymer foam sheet has a first front face forming the front face of the foam component, a first rear face, and first side faces forming portions of the plurality of side faces of the foam component,

the second polymer foam sheet has a second front face oriented toward the first rear face, a second rear face forming the rear face of the foam component, and second side faces forming additional portions of the plurality of side faces of the foam component, and

the second polymer foam sheet is fixed relative to the first polymer foam sheet.

11 . A method comprising:

placing a plurality of cargo units in a railcar; and

placing a plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar,

wherein, after placement of the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar, the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels are arranged, in a front to rear direction of the railcar, in alternating groups of one or more cargo units, of the plurality of cargo units, separated by one or more cargo restraint panels, of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, and

wherein each cargo restraint panel, of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, comprises:

a foam component comprising a front face, a rear face, and a plurality of side faces extending between the front face and the rear face, wherein

a plurality of front edges are formed at meetings of the front face and the plurality of side faces, and

a plurality of rear edges are formed at meetings of the rear face and the plurality of side faces;

a plurality of plastic guards attached to the foam component, wherein

the plurality of plastic guards extend over the front edges and the rear edges,

the plurality of plastic guards contact the foam component, and

outer surfaces of the cargo restraint panel comprise surfaces of the plurality of plastic guards;

a front facing material bonded to and extending over the front face; and

a rear facing material bonded to and extending over the rear face.

The method of claim 11 , wherein, for each of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, a portion of the front facing material of the cargo restraint panel contacts a portion of the front face of the cargo restraint panel and is situated between the portion of the front face and an inner surface of a portion of a plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards of the cargo restraint panel, extending over the portion of the front face of the cargo restraint panel.

The method of claim 12 , wherein, for each of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, the plastic guard extending over the portion of the front face of the cargo restraint panel comprises a single piece that extends over the portion of the front face of the cargo restraint panel and a portion of a side face, of the plurality of side faces of the cargo restraint panel, adjacent the portion of the front face of the cargo restraint panel.

The method of claim 11 , wherein, after placement of the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar, each of the cargo units, of the plurality of cargo units, is secured in the front to rear direction by other cargo units, of the plurality of cargo units, and by other cargo restraint panels of the plurality of cargo restraint panels.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, after placement of the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar,

each of the cargo restraint panels, of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, is in contact with one of the cargo units, of the plurality of cargo units, positioned directly in front of that cargo restraint panel, and

each of the cargo restraint panels, of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, is in contact with one of the cargo units, of the plurality of cargo units, positioned directly to the rear of that cargo restraint panel.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, after placement of the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar, each of the cargo restraint panels, of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, is partially compressed.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein none of the plurality of cargo restraint panels spans an entire width of the railcar.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, after placement of the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels in the railcar, the plurality of cargo units and the plurality of cargo restraint panels extend continuously from an interior rear end wall of the railcar to an interior front end wall of the railcar.

The method of claim 11 , wherein, for each of the plurality of cargo restraint panels, each of the front facing material of the cargo restraint panel and the rear facing material of the cargo restraint panel comprises one or more of: a polymer film, a polymer coating applied by spraying, polyester, polyethylene terephthalate, a urethane, or an epoxy resin.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein, for each cargo restraint panel of the plurality of cargo restraint panels:

the plastic guards extend over regions of the front face adjacent the front edges, regions of the side faces adjacent the front edges, regions of the side faces adjacent the rear edges, and regions of the rear face adjacent the rear edges,

a first plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards, extends over an entirety of a front edge of the plurality of front edges, and

a portion of a second plastic guard, of the plurality of plastic guards, is located between a side face, of the plurality of side faces, and a first portion of the first plastic guard.

21 . The cargo restraint panel of claim 1 , wherein the second plastic guard directly contacts the foam component, and wherein outer surfaces of the cargo restraint panel comprise surfaces of one or more additional portions of the second plastic guard.
