Abstract

Embodiments provide physiological measurement systems, devices and methods for cardiovascular intensity measurement. In an aspect, a wearable device receives a time series of heart rate data for a user. The time series of heart rate data can be weighted and summed according to a weighting scheme. The weighted and summed time series of heart rate data can be used to generate an intensity score indicating the cardiovascular intensities experienced by the user during a desired period of time.

Claims (29)

1 . A system for physiological monitoring and measurement comprising:

a wearable physiological measurement device including one or more sensors configured to continuously monitor a heart rate of a user;

a strap attached to the continuously wearable physiological measurement device and couplable to an appendage of the user;

a display device; and

a processor coupled in a communicating relationship with the wearable physiological measurement device, the processor configured by computer code stored in a memory and executing on the processor to:

receive heart rate data for the user from the wearable physiological measurement device, the heart rate data including a time series of heart rate data for the user;

weight the time series of heart rate according to a weighting scheme to provide a weighted time series of heart rate data using two or more models of physiological processes for different levels of cardiovascular exertion;

sum the weighted time series of heart rate data for a predetermined unit interval to provide a summed weighted time series of heart rate data;

generate an intensity score providing an indicator of cardiovascular intensity based on the summed weighted time series of heart rate data over the predetermined unit interval; and

display the intensity score in a user interface rendered on the display device.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to transform the time series of heart rate data to a time series of heart rate reserve data based on the time series of heart rate data, a resting heart rate for the user, and a maximum heart rate for the user.

3 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to determine a maximum heart rate of the user and a resting heart rate of the user.

4 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes a dynamic weighting scheme adapted for one or more physiological properties of the user.

5 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes a static weighting scheme based on static models of a physiological process.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes a plurality of categories dependent on an efficiency of cellular respiration.

7 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes at least one category for anaerobic respiration.

8 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes piecewise linear parameter ranges.

9 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes weighting categories with strictly increasing weight values for increasing heart rates.

10 . The system of claim 1 wherein the weighting scheme includes a weighting function that increases for increasing categories of exertion.

11 . The system of claim 1 wherein the intensity score is adapted for one or more of a user age, a resting heart rate, and a maximum heart rate.

12 . The system of claim 1 wherein the intensity score is adapted for an anaerobic threshold for the user.

13 . The system of claim 1 further comprising receiving a user input to activate a privacy setting during which physiological data is not shared with other users.

14 . The system of claim 1 further comprising displaying the intensity score along with information characterizing heart rate zones experienced by the user during an exercise routine.

15 . The system of claim 1 further comprising displaying the intensity score along with information characterizing whether the user exceeded an anaerobic threshold.

16 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to scale the summed weighted time series of heart rate data transform the intensity score to a predetermined distribution.

17 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor executes on a web server or a mobile computing device.

18 . The system of claim 1 wherein the wearable physiological measurement device includes a wireless transmitter coupling the wearable physiological measurement device in a communicating relationship with the processor.

19 . The system of claim 1 wherein the predetermined unit interval for summing the weighted time series of heart rate data includes an exercise routine by the user.

20 . The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is coupled to the wearable physiological measurement device through a Bluetooth connection.
