Abstract

An integrated system for the monitoring and treating diabetes is provided, including an integrated receiver/hand-held medicament injection pen, including electronics, for use with a continuous glucose sensor. In some embodiments, the receiver is configured to receive continuous glucose sensor data, to calculate a medicament therapy (e.g., via the integrated system electronics) and to automatically set a bolus dose of the integrated hand-held medicament injection pen, whereby the user can manually inject the bolus dose of medicament into the host. In some embodiments, the integrated receiver and hand-held medicament injection pen are integrally formed, while in other embodiments they are detachably connected and communicated via mutually engaging electrical contacts and/or via wireless communication.

Claims (26)

1 . An integrated system for treating diabetes, the integrated system comprising:

a first medicament injection pen configured to deliver short-acting insulin to a host, wherein a dose of the short-acting insulin is determined based at least in part on glucose data obtained from a glucose sensor worn by the host; and

a second medicament injection pen configured to deliver long-acting insulin to the host.

2 . The integrated system of claim 1 , further comprising a receiver that is wirelessly coupled to the first medicament injection pen, the second medicament injection pen, and the glucose sensor.

3 . The integrated system of claim 1 , wherein the first medicament injection pen comprises a housing that includes a display screen.

4 . The integrated system of claim 3 , wherein the display screen of the first medicament injection pen is configured to display a representation of the dose of short-acting insulin.

5 . The integrated system of claim 4 , wherein the display screen of the first medicament injection pen is further configured to display a representation of a current glucose value of the host based on the glucose data obtained from the glucose sensor.

6 . The integrated system of claim 5 , wherein the display screen of the first medicament injection pen is configured to display the current glucose value of the host proximate the representation of the dose of short-acting insulin.

7 . The integrated system of claim 3 , wherein the housing of the first medicament injection pen further comprises a button to toggle through information displayed by the display screen.

8 . The integrated system of claim 3 , wherein the second medicament injection pen comprises an additional housing that includes an additional display screen.

9 . The integrated system of claim 8 , wherein the additional display screen is configured to display a representation of an additional dose of long-acting insulin.

10 . The integrated system of claim 9 , wherein the additional dose of the long-acting insulin is determined based at least in part on the glucose data obtained from the glucose sensor worn by the host.

11 . The integrated system of claim 9 , wherein the dose of short-acting insulin comprises a bolus dose, and wherein the additional dose of long-acting insulin comprises a basal dose.

12 . The integrated system of claim 8 , wherein the additional housing of the second medicament injection pen further comprises a button to toggle through information displayed by the additional display screen.

13 . The integrated system of claim 1 , further comprising a receiver and a single point glucose monitor that is configured to measure glucose of the host.

14 . The integrated system of claim 13 , wherein the single point glucose monitor is configured to communicate the measured glucose of the host to a receiver.

15 . The integrated system of claim 13 , wherein the single point glucose monitor is configured to communicate the measured glucose of the host to the first medicament injection pen.

16 . A medicament injection pen comprising:

a housing;

a port integrated into the housing, the port configured to receive a cartridge of insulin;

electronics to receive glucose data from a glucose sensor worn by a host via a wireless connection between the glucose sensor and the medicament injection pen; and

a display screen integrated into the housing, the display screen configured to display a current glucose value of the host based on the glucose data received from the glucose sensor, wherein the medicament injection pen is configured to deliver a dose of the insulin to the host, the dose of the insulin determined based at least in part on the current glucose value of the host.

17 . The medicament injection pen of claim 16 , wherein the display screen is further configured to display the dose of insulin proximate the current glucose value.

18 . The medicament injection pen of claim 16 , wherein the insulin comprises short-acting insulin.

19 . The medicament injection pen of claim 16 , wherein the insulin comprises long-acting insulin.

20 . The medicament injection pen of claim 16 , wherein the medicament injection pen is further coupled to a receiver, the receiver further coupled to an additional medicament injection, the additional medicament injection pen configured to deliver a different type of insulin than the insulin delivered by the medicament injection pen.
