Abstract

A gaming machine comprising a display device and game-logic circuitry that initiates a cycle counter and links a multiplier value to a symbol position. The display device selectively populates the symbol position with a value-bearing symbol including award indicia indicating an award value, updates the award indicia at least partially as a function of the award value and the multiplier value and locks, in response to the symbol position being populated by the value-bearing symbol, the value-bearing symbol within the symbol position and updates the award indicia based on the award value and the multiplier value, updates the cycle counter and the multiplier value in response to the symbol position remaining unpopulated, presents multiplier indicia associated with the updated multiplier value, and presents an award at least partially as a function of an award value indicated by award indicia of any locked value-bearing symbols within a plurality of symbol positions.

a display device configured to present a plurality of symbol positions; and

game-logic circuitry configured to:

initiate a cycle counter at an initial counter value;

link a first multiplier value to a first symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions;

in response to the first symbol position being populated by the value-bearing symbol, cause the display device to: (i) update the award indicia of the value-bearing symbol at least partially as a function of the award value and the first multiplier value, and (ii) lock the value-bearing symbol within the first symbol position for at least one subsequent game cycle outcome;

in response to the first symbol position remaining unpopulated, update the cycle counter and update the first multiplier value at least partially as a function of the updated cycle counter;

cause the display device to present multiplier indicia associated with the first symbol position, the multiplier indicia visually indicating the updated first multiplier value; and

cause the display device to present an award at least partially as a function of an award value indicated by award indicia of any locked value-bearing symbols within the plurality of symbol positions.

2. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the cycle counter and the first multiplier value are updated in response to none of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with new value-bearing symbols.

3. The gaming machine of claim 1 , where the cycle counter is reset to the initial counter value in response to any symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with a new value-bearing symbol.

4. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first multiplier value is reset to an initial multiplier value in response any symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with a new value-bearing symbol.

5. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein each symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions is associated with a respective multiplier value, the respective multiplier value removed in response to the symbol position being occupied by a new value-bearing symbol, wherein the award indicia of the new value-bearing symbol is updated at least partially as a function of the respective multiplier value and an initial award value of the new value-bearing symbol.

6. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first multiplier value increases in response to the cycle counter updating towards a termination value.

7. The gaming machine of claim 6 , wherein the first multiplier value is selected from a set of predetermined multiplier values as a function of the cycle counter.

8. A method of conducting a game with a gaming system, the gaming system comprising a gaming machine including a display device configured to present a plurality of symbol positions and game-logic circuitry, the method comprising:

initiating, by the game-logic circuitry, a cycle counter at an initial counter value;

linking, by the game-logic circuitry, a first multiplier value to a first symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions;

causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present a first game cycle outcome by selectively populating the first symbol position with a value-bearing symbol, the value-bearing symbol including award indicia visually indicating an award value associated with the value-bearing symbol;

in response to the first symbol position being populated by the value-bearing symbol, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to: (i) update the award indicia of the value-bearing symbol at least partially as a function of the award value and the first multiplier value, and (ii) lock the value-bearing symbol within the first symbol position for at least one subsequent game cycle outcome;

in response to the first symbol position remaining unpopulated, updating, by the game-logic circuitry, the cycle counter and the first multiplier value, the first multiplier value updated at least partially as a function of the updated cycle counter;

causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present multiplier indicia associated with the first symbol position, the multiplier indicia visually indicating the updated first multiplier value; and

causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present an award at least partially as a function of an award value indicated by award indicia of any locked value-bearing symbols within the plurality of symbol positions.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the cycle counter and the first multiplier value are updated in response to none of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with new value-bearing symbols.

10. The method of claim 8 , where the cycle counter is reset to the initial counter value in response to any symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with a new value-bearing symbol.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first multiplier value is reset to an initial multiplier value in response any symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions being populated with a new value-bearing symbol.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein each unoccupied symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions is associated with a respective multiplier value, the respective multiplier value removed in response to the symbol position being occupied by a new value-bearing symbol, wherein the award indicia of the new value-bearing symbol is updated at least partially as a function of the respective multiplier value and an initial award value of the new value-bearing symbol.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present multiplier indicia for the multiplier values of the plurality of symbol positions.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein at least one symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions is occupied by preexisting value-bearing symbols prior to the first game cycle outcome, and wherein the preexisting value-bearing symbols remain within the at least one symbol position through at least the first game cycle outcome.

15. A gaming system comprising:

a gaming machine including a display device; and

game-logic circuitry configured to:

initiate a cycle counter at an initial counter value;

link a first multiplier value to a first symbol position of the plurality of symbol positions;

cause the display device to present a first game cycle outcome by selectively populating the first symbol position with a value-bearing symbol, the value-bearing symbol including award indicia visually indicating an award value associated with the value-bearing symbol;

in response to the first symbol position being populated by the value-bearing symbol, cause the display device to: (i) update the award indicia of the value-bearing symbol at least partially as a function of the award value and the first multiplier value, and (ii) lock the value-bearing symbol within the first symbol position for at least one subsequent game cycle outcome;

in response to the first symbol position remaining unpopulated, update the cycle counter and update the first multiplier value at least partially as a function of the updated cycle counter;

cause the display device to present multiplier indicia associated with the first symbol position, the multiplier indicia visually indicating the updated first multiplier value; and

cause the display device to present an award at least partially as a function of an award value indicated by award indicia of any locked value-bearing symbols within the plurality of symbol positions.
