Abstract

A method and medical pump to perform a flushing procedure are provided. The medical pump is configured to execute the flushing procedure subsequent to an infusion procedure, the flushing procedure and infusion procedure lacking a specified relationship between each other until after performance of the infusion procedure. The method comprises performing an infusion procedure of a medicament with the medical pump and automatically querying in human detectable form whether to execute a flushing procedure in response to conclusion of the infusion procedure.

Claims (91)

1. A method of providing fluid in a fluid line with a medical pump configured to execute a pumping procedure, the method comprising:

comparing an outer diameter of a syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a syringe profile library, the syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile, performing the pumping procedure according to the syringe profile.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing a syringe model of a syringe to be used in the pumping procedure to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library;

identifying the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library when the syringe model matches a syringe model associated with the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

indicating an error when one of the following occurs: the syringe model does not match a syringe model of the syringe models associated with the syringe profiles or the outer diameter of the syringe does not match the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the comparing the syringe model of the syringe to the syringe models associated with the syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library includes comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the static syringe profile library when the syringe model of the syringe does not match the syringe models associated with the syringe profiles saved in the dynamic syringe profile library.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein when the syringe model of the syringe does match a syringe model associated with a syringe profile in the static syringe profile library, the method further comprises:

comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library; and

the comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library includes comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in a static syringe profile library when the outer diameter of the syringe does not match the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein when the syringe model of the syringe does match a syringe model associated with a syringe profile in the static syringe profile library, the method further comprises:

comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes:

comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe does not match the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the dynamic syringe profile library, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes:

determining if a number syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is greater than zero;

if the number of syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is greater than zero, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library; and

if the number of syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is not greater than zero, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sensing the outer diameter of the syringe with a sensor.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter associated with the syringe model is a range of outer diameters.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the static syringe profile library includes at least two syringe profiles.

13. A medical pump comprising:

at least one processing unit; and

a memory containing program code configured to, when executed by the at least one processing unit:

compare an outer diameter of a syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved a syringe profile library;

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, perform the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe does not match an outer diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a dynamic syringe profile library of the syringe profile library, compare outer diameter of the syringe with an outer diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a static syringe profile library of the syringe profile library.

14. The medical pump of claim 13 , the program code is further configured to indicate an error when the outer diameter of the syringe does not match the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile.

15. The medical pump of claim 13 , further comprising:

a sensor in communication with the at least one processing unit; and

wherein the sensor is configured to sense an outer diameter of the syringe.

16. The medical pump of claim 13 , wherein the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile is a range of outer diameters.

17. A medical pump comprising:

at least one processing unit;

a sensor in communication with the at least one processing unit; and

a memory containing program code configured to, when executed by the at least one processing unit:

using the sensor, determine an outer diameter of a syringe received at the medical pump;

determine whether there is a match of the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in at least one of a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library;

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, perform the pumping procedure according to the syringe profile.

18. The medical pump of claim 17 , further comprising:

a clamp configured to engage the syringe received at the medical pump; and

wherein the clamp is coupled to the sensor.

19. The medical pump of claim 17 , wherein the syringe profile is one of a plurality of syringe profiles stored in a syringe profile library having the dynamic syringe profile library and the static syringe profile library.

The medical pump of claim 19 , wherein when the program code determines whether there is a match of the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile of the plurality of syringe profiles in the syringe profile library, the program code is configured to:

determine whether there is a match for the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile of the dynamic syringe profile library; and

when there is not a match for the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter of a syringe profile of the dynamic syringe profile library, determine whether there is a match for the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter of a syringe profile of the static syringe profile library.

21. A method of providing fluid in a fluid line with a medical pump configured to execute a pumping procedure, the method comprising:

comparing a syringe model of a syringe to be used in the pumping procedure to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library;

identifying the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library when the syringe model matches a syringe model associated with the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library;

comparing an outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a syringe profile library, the syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile, and

wherein the comparing the syringe model of the syringe to the syringe models associated with the syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library includes comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the static syringe profile library when the syringe model of the syringe does not match the syringe models associated with the syringe profiles saved in the dynamic syringe profile library.

22. A method of providing fluid in a fluid line with a medical pump configured to execute a pumping procedure, the method comprising:

comparing a syringe model of a syringe to be used in the pumping procedure to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library;

identifying the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library when the syringe model matches a syringe model associated with the syringe profile saved in the syringe profile library;

comparing an outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a syringe profile library, the syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile, and

wherein:

the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library, and

the comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in the syringe profile library includes comparing the syringe model of the syringe to syringe models associated with syringe profiles saved in a static syringe profile library when the outer diameter of the syringe does not match the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library.

23. A method of providing fluid in a fluid line with a medical pump configured to execute a pumping procedure, the method comprising:

comparing an outer diameter of a syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a syringe profile library, the syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile, and

wherein the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes:

comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library, and

when the outer diameter of the syringe does not matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the dynamic syringe profile library, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

24. A method of providing fluid in a fluid line with a medical pump configured to execute a pumping procedure, the method comprising:

comparing an outer diameter of a syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in a syringe profile library, the syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library; and

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, performing the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile, and

wherein the comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile includes:

determining if a number syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is greater than zero,

if the number of syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is greater than zero, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile saved in the dynamic syringe profile library, and

if the number of syringe profiles in the dynamic syringe profile library is not greater than zero, comparing the outer diameter of the syringe to an outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile in the static syringe profile library.

25. A medical pump comprising:

at least one processing unit;

a sensor in communication with the at least one processing unit; and

a memory containing program code configured to, when executed by the at least one processing unit:

using the sensor, determine an outer diameter of a syringe received at the medical pump;

determine whether there is a match of the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile of a plurality of syringe profiles saved in a syringe profile library having a dynamic syringe profile library and a static syringe profile library;

when the outer diameter of the syringe matches the outer syringe diameter associated with the syringe profile, perform the pumping procedure based on the syringe profile, and

wherein when the program code determines whether there is a match of the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile of the plurality of syringe profiles in the syringe profile library, the program code is configured to:

determine whether there is a match for outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter associated with a syringe profile of the dynamic syringe profile library; and

when there is not a match for the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter of a syringe profile of the dynamic syringe profile library, determine whether there is a match for the outer diameter of the syringe with an outer syringe diameter of a syringe profile of the static syringe profile library.
