Abstract

A data stream monitor including a processor and associated memory initiates a data stream monitoring application. The data stream monitoring application is configured to test a plurality of data streams, and obtains a plurality of data stream records associated with the plurality of data streams to be tested. The data stream monitor writes a lastRecord indicator to a file. The lastRecord indicator identifies a last data stream to have been tested. The data streams are tested, and the lastRecord indicator is updated each time a subsequent data stream is tested. The data stream monitor determines whether a value of the lastRecord indicator has changed from a previous value. In response to determining that the value of the lastRecord indicator has not changed, testing of the plurality of data streams is restarted.

Claims (73)

1. A method for data stream monitoring, the method comprising:

initiating a data stream monitoring application at a data stream monitor including a processor and associated memory, the data stream monitoring application configured to test a plurality of data streams;

obtaining a plurality of data stream records associated with the plurality of data streams to be tested;

writing a lastRecord indicator to a file, wherein the lastRecord indicator identifies a last data stream to have been tested;

testing the plurality of data streams;

updating the lastRecord indicator each time a subsequent data stream is tested;

determining whether a value of the lastRecord indicator has changed from a previous value; and

in response to determining that the value of the lastRecord indicator has not changed, restarting testing of the plurality of data streams.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

periodically evaluating the lastRecord indicator to determine if the value of the lastRecord indicator has changed.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

restarting testing of the plurality of data streams at the data stream identified in the lastRecord indicator.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting, from the data stream monitoring application to a streaming server, a request for data stream records to be tested; and

receiving the data stream records at the data stream monitoring application.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the data stream records for individual media streams include:

a protocol to use to connect to the individual media streams; and

a stream address.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

receiving, at the data stream monitoring application, a startAt value indicating a stream record number at which to begin retrieving the data stream records; and

receiving a value limit indicating a total number of data stream records to be retrieved.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

tracking progress of data stream testing by comparing the value of the lastRecord indicator to the value limit.

8. A data stream monitor comprising:

a processor is configured to initiate a data stream monitoring application to test a plurality of data streams;

memory coupled to the processor;

a network interface coupled to the processor, and configured to obtain a plurality of data stream records associated with the plurality of data streams to be tested;

the processor is further configured to:

write a lastRecord indicator to the memory, wherein the lastRecord indicator identifies a last data stream to have been tested;

test of the plurality of data streams using the data stream monitoring application;

update the lastRecord indicator each time a subsequent data stream is tested;

determine whether a value of the lastRecord indicator has changed from a previous value; and

in response to determining that the value of the lastRecord indicator has not changed, restart testing of the plurality of data streams.

9. The data stream monitor of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

periodically evaluate the lastRecord indicator to determine if the value of the lastRecord indicator has changed.

10. The data stream monitor of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

restart testing of the plurality of data streams at a data stream identified in the lastRecord indicator.

11. The data stream monitor of claim 8 , wherein the network interface is further configured to:

transmit, from the data stream monitoring application to a streaming server, a request for data stream records to be tested; and

receive the data stream records.

12. The data stream monitor of claim 11 , wherein:

the data stream records for individual media streams include:

a protocol to use to connect to the individual media streams; and

a stream address.

13. The data stream monitor of claim 11 , wherein the network interface is further configured to receive:

a startAt value indicating a stream record number at which to begin retrieving the data stream records; and

a value limit indicating a total number of data stream records to be retrieved.

14. The data stream monitor of claim 13 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

track progress of data stream testing by comparing the value of the lastRecord indicator to the value limit.

15. A system comprising:

a first processing system configured to implement a stream monitor;

a second processing system configured to implement a streaming server;

the stream monitor implemented by the first processing system configured to:

initiate a data stream monitoring application to test a plurality of data streams;

obtain, from the streaming server, a plurality of data stream records associated with the plurality of data streams to be tested;

write a lastRecord indicator to a file, wherein the lastRecord indicator identifies a last data stream to have been tested;

test of the plurality of data streams using the data stream monitoring application;

update the lastRecord indicator each time a subsequent data stream is tested;

determine whether a value of the lastRecord indicator has changed from a previous value; and

in response to determining that the value of the lastRecord indicator has not changed, restart testing of the plurality of data streams.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the stream monitor is further configured to:

periodically evaluate the lastRecord indicator to determine if the value of the lastRecord indicator has changed.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the stream monitor is further configured to:

restart testing of the plurality of data streams at a data stream identified in the lastRecord indicator.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein:

the stream monitor is further configured to transmit, to the streaming server, a request for data stream records to be tested; and

the streaming server is configured to transmit the data stream records for receipt by the stream monitor.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the stream monitor is further configured to receive from the streaming server:

a startAt value indicating a stream record number at which the stream monitor is to begin retrieving the data stream records from the streaming server; and

a value limit indicating a total number of data stream records to be retrieved.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the stream monitor is further configured to:

track progress of data stream testing by comparing the value of the lastRecord indicator to the value limit.
