Sample Processing Device Comprising Magnetic and Mechanical Actuating Elements Using Linear or Rotational Motion and Methods of Use Thereof
An apparatus and method for simple, low power, automated processing of biological samples through multiple preparation and assay steps. The apparatus and methods described facilitate the point-of-care implementation of diagnostic assays. The apparatus includes mechanical actuating elements using linear and/or rotational motion.
1 . A microfluidic device comprising:
a microfluidic cartridge comprising at least one reagent pouch comprising a stored reagent, at least one fluidic conduit, and a plurality of fluidic wells at least one of which comprises magnetic beads;
at least one actuation element comprising permanent magnets and protrusions, the permanent magnets and protrusions being spatially arranged on said actuation element such that they perform sequential steps of an assay;
the microfluidic cartridge adjacent to and positioned for physical interaction with said actuator element;
wherein the permanent magnets are adapted to move said magnetic beads between fluidic wells.
