Abstract

A set-top box with an interactive portal and system and method for use of the same are disclosed. In one embodiment of the set-top box, the set-top box is deployed to provide an interactive portal in a hospitality establishment having multiple rooms, such as a hotel. The set-top box is associated with a room and includes a housing that secures a television input, a television output, a processor, a transceiver, and memory therein in an interconnected bus architecture. The set-top box generates a default interactive portal as well as a guest-specific interactive portal, which is generated from a guest configuration profile having information including guest identification, a guest channel preference presentation, and a guest service preference presentation with guest account information. The guest configuration profile may also enable the creation of a local area wireless network with substantially the same behavior as the guest's home wireless network.

Claims (43)

1. A system for configuring a hospitality property having a plurality of rooms, the system comprising:

a server;

at least one amenity located in a room of the plurality of rooms, the at least one amenity being configured in one of a first configuration profile and a second configuration profile, the second configuration profile provisioning room-specific guest preferred features for the room, the guest preferred features including room temperature, and television lineup, and other amenity preferences;

a set-top box located in the room, the set-top box being in communication with the server, the at least one amenity, a remote control, and a wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device is supplied by or carried by the guest and is registered and associated with the set-top box in order to join a local area wireless network at the hospitality property to enable various sevices and the local area wireless network requiring authorization;

a programming interface being configured to communicate with the set-top box, the set-top box having a processor and non-transitory memory communicatively interconnected in a busing architecture;

the non-transitory memory of the set-top box including processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the server, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile;

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the remote control, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile; and

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the set-top box and the remote control communicate via wireless signals selected from the group of wireless protocols consisting of 802.11, 3G, 4G, Edge, WiFi, ZigBee, near field communications (NFC), Bluetooth, and infrared (IR).

The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the set-top box and the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device communicate via wireless signals selected from the group of wireless protocols consisting of 802.11, 3G, 4G, Edge, WiFi, ZigBee, near field communications (NFC), Bluetooth, and infrared (IR).

4. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the remote control and the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device each communicate with the set-top box via different wireless protocols.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one amenity further comprises a television configured to receive content from the set-top box.

6. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one amenity further comprises a display configured to receive content from the set-top box.

7. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second configuration profile further includes control settings for room amenities.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second configuration profile further includes preferences for a lodging establishment experience.

9. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first configuration profile comprises a default configuration profile and the second configuration profile comprises a guest configuration profile.

10. The system as recited in claim 9 , wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

in response to receiving the guest configuration profile, activate the local area wireless network for a guest associated with the guest configuration profile;

the local area wireless network providing identical network configuration and device and application login credentials as a home wireless network; and

the guest configuration profile configuring the local area wireless network to be a guest private wireless network that acts as an access point having the same network configuration and login credentials for devices, applications, and services as a home wireless network belonging to the guest.

11. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

in response to receiving the guest configuration profile, activate a local area wireless connection for a guest device to a network associated with a hospitality establishment.

12. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the server is located on the hospitality property.

13. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the server is located in a cloud.

14. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first configuration profile provisions default features for the room, the default features including at least one of room temperature and television lineup.

15. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second configuration profile comprises at least one of guest identification, a guest channel preference presentation, and a guest service preference.

16. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second configuration profile comprises guest account information.

17. A system for configuring a hospitality property having a plurality of rooms, the system comprising:

a server located in a cloud relative to the hospitality property;

at least one amenity located in a room of the plurality of rooms, the at least one amenity being configured in one of a first configuration profile and a second configuration profile, the second configuration profile provisioning room-specific guest preferred features for the room, the guest preferred features including room temperature, and television lineup, and other amenity preferences;

a set-top box located in the room, the set-top box being in communication with the server, a display, the at least one amenity, a remote control, and a wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device is supplied by or carried by the guest and is registered and associated with the set-top box in order to join a local area wireless network at the hospitality property to enable various sevices and the local area wireless network requiring authorization;

a programming interface being configured to communicate with the set-top box, the set-top box having a processor and non-transitory memory communicatively interconnected in a busing architecture;

the non-transitory memory of the set-top box including processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the server, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile;

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the remote control, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile; and

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile.

18. A system for configuring a hospitality property having a plurality of rooms, the system comprising:

a programming interface being configured to communicate with a set-top box, the set-top box having a processor and non-transitory memory communicatively interconnected in a busing architecture, the set-top box being located in a room of the plurality of rooms, the set-top box being in communication with a server, a display, at least one amenity, a remote control, and a wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, the server located in a cloud relative to the hospitality property, the at least one amenity located in the room, the at least one amenity being configured in one of a first configuration profile and a second configuration profile, the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device is supplied by or carried by the guest and is registered and associated with the set-top box in order to join a local area wireless network at the hospitality property to enable various sevices and the local area wireless network requiring authorization, the second configuration profile provisioning room-specific guest preferred features for the room, the guest preferred features including room temperature, and television lineup, and other amenity preferences;

the non-transitory memory of the set-top box including processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the server, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile;

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the remote control, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile; and

in response to receiving the second configuration profile from the wireless-enabled interactive handheld device, override the first configuration profile at the at least one amenity with the second configuration profile.
